It's worth mentioning Rooster was never angry at Maverick for his father's death. He was angry because Maverick held him back in the academy out of fear. Imo that was such a better reason

I loved that they didn't go for the cliché angst for his Father's death , but rather for making him lose years at the Academy , which is understandable . Although Mav is just doing what Rooster's mother begged him to do and doesn't want Rooster to blame his late mother , so he shoulders the decision instead .
Honestly, any movie acknowledging Tom Cruise's older age and using that to effectively advance the story is a good movie in my book

I remember this hilarious anecdote from an aviation magazine where they were testing the windshield of a new airliner by firing dead chickens at it at an appropriate velocity to simulate bird strike, and to their horror the windshield kept shattering to oblivion. Long story short, eventually they got in communication with the manufacturer of the test kit/cannon and had to be told that they had to thaw the frozen chickens before firing them out of the cannon 🤣🤣
I liked the joke about Tom Cruise starting a real war just for authenticity in the movie. Also the 15 second compilation of the pilots' heavy breathing is awkwardly hilarious. Did it take much effort to collect it ? xD

You know what? I actually DON'T think they mirror Maverick and Iceman. If you think about it, neither of them actually resemble either of the characters. Sure, Bradley was raised by Maverick, but Mav would never hesitate in taking a shot, he would never hesitate periodt. And sure, Iceman may have been cocky and smug, he was still a team player. He'd never abandon his wingman like Jake does. The only thing I find similar is the friends/rivals relationship between the two. But other than that, I don't think they're that similar, which is a GOOD thing. It would have been too "on the nose" if their personalities had been similar. I much prefer Rooster and Hangman being their own selves and original characters with original personalities. ... Thanks for coming to my TED Talk-

One of the few movies that are a continuation that I liked the new characters, and the reason is very simple: they respect the old characters. New characters doesnt need to "kill" the old ones to be likeable, they just need to be charismatic, well developed and build on the franchise, not take over it.

Funnily enough, I'd say certain elements of the canyon were more based on the Ravine Raid from the second Area 88 OVA (Burning Mirage). Bunch of merc pilots have to, at night, fly through a canyon to evade radar detection to hit an oil refinery. The differences start to show after the aircraft make it through the ravine, when a bunch of Gen 1 Harriers show up and start wrecking the Mercs. The Area 88 OVAs came out in 1985/1986, so a tad before the first Top Gun. Better yet, a character (Mickey Simon) flies an F-14A, which is kinda funny.
5:03 that Scientology reference is just amazing.
Funny enough about Jennifer Connelly's character, "Penny Benjamin" is mentioned in the 1st movie and that he was with her at some point before the first movie, it was just one line so it was easy to miss (I only picked it up because I went back and watched the first one).
