I hope I misheard you about not stripping the crank any further. It doesn't make sense not to take the con rods off, now you've got this far, to examine the big end shells and crankpins, especially when the oil pick up strainer was so clogged. It also means you will be able to clean the crank and its oilways properly and blow it through with compressed air. Bear in mind that brake cleaner evaporates fairly quickly, so if you are leaving parts soaking in a bath of it, you will need to cover the container, preferably with an air-tight lid. For general degreasing, especially immersion in a bath, I would suggest an engine cleaner like Gunk, it's much less volatile. You can always give parts a final spray off with brake cleaner, to help them dry quicker.

I don't intend to strip it down to individual cogs but will certainly blast out the oil ways.

White vigegar was ace at removing the rust from a very rusty petrol tank. You could try that if you can tip the case to make a little vinegar bath around the siezed shaft. Vinegar has very good creeping properties.

Really? I haven't had much joy with white vinegar beyond tanks.

Keep at it Nat, but please no more mole grips on reluctant shafts.

You might be able to drill and tap the end of the shafts to draw them out with a slide hammer, but this depends on how good the case hardening is.

I think that I will leave them where they are assuming that I can clean them well enough in situ.

Hi Nat, sorry I'm replying late. The front shift fork shaft looks to have a screw locking the shaft inside. Mind you, it could be just crap but it does look like a lock screw. The rear one looks to be under that dowel pin that is where the output shaft is. A lock screw could be underneath that dowel? It just looks like they both get lock screwed in position...

There are no lock screws mate. They are just stuck!

@@NatsNackersYard that's bizarre. For the engines that aren't stuck, what keeps them in the gear box & not floating around? A side case with bosses holding them in position? Strange engine
