VIDEO SUMMARY
This video is about Hofstede's Model of National Cultures.
Jim starts by introducing the concept of organisational culture in the context of multinational businesses. The speaker mentions Geert Hofstede who developed a model to categorise national cultures.
The six categories of Hofstede's Model of National Cultures are:
Individualism versus collectivism: This refers to the importance of individual performance versus team performance. Individualistic cultures value individual performance more, while collectivistic cultures emphasize teamwork.
Power distance: This refers to how a culture views authority. Cultures with high power distance encourage authority and bureaucracy, while cultures with low power distance emphasize flatter organizational structures and delegation.
Masculinity versus femininity: This category is not about gender but about decision-making styles. Masculine cultures have a more assertive decision-making style, while feminine cultures are more consultative and relationship-oriented.
Uncertainty avoidance: This refers to a culture's tolerance for ambiguity. Cultures with low uncertainty avoidance are more comfortable with taking risks, while cultures with high uncertainty avoidance prefer to avoid risks.
Long-term orientation versus short-term orientation: This refers to how far ahead cultures plan. Long-term oriented cultures focus on the future, while short-term oriented cultures are more concerned with the present.
Indulgence versus restraint: This refers to a culture's attitude towards gratification. Indulgent cultures allow for more freedom and enjoyment of life, while restrained cultures are more conservative.
Jim mentions that you can find data on how different countries score on these six dimensions on the Hofstede Center website.
Jim concludes the video by mentioning that understanding these cultural differences is important for multinational businesses operating around the world.

    1. Individualism v Collectivism - some societies value the performance of individuals - some value team performance - implications for financial rewards (indiv bonuses v profit sharing) 2. Power distance - extent to which inequality is tolerated and whether there is a strong sense of position and status - high PD = accepts bureaucracy and respect for authority and rank - low PD =suggests a flat org structure and emphasis on personal responsibility/autonomy 3. Masculinity v Femininity - Decision making style - Masculine = hard edged, fact based, aggressive style - Feminine = consultation and individual analysis 4. Uncertainty Avoidance - Attitude to risk taking - Level of anxiety - Low levels: willingness to accept risk, rule breaking, chanfe - High levels: more support for rules, data, etc. 5. Long Term Orientation - Some countries emphasize short termism - Other counries take a much longer term perspective - Key implication is the impact on investment decisions and risk taking 6. Indulgence v Restraint - Indulgence stands for a society that allows free gratification of basic human drives - Restraint stands for a society that supresses needs and regulates by social norms

A new dimension that I want to add is childlikeness vs maturity (childlike or mature). Childlike cultures value more the innocence of children, and mature cultures value more the experience of adults. Childlike cultures put more emphasis on children rights and mature cultures put more emphasis on respecting adults. Childlike cultures view children and adults as equals and mature cultures view adults as authorities.

It has to do with cultures and what they value and nothing to do with gender. Masculine cultures would value ambition power and financial stability a masculine culture would be the USA and feminine cultures value things like taking care of people supporting others countries such Netherlands’s or Finland would be considered feminine culture
