Edgar Schein's Culture Model

Edgar Schein is a former professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management in Massachusetts, USA. Also, he has worked for many years as a consultant in organisational development and corporate culture.
Edgar Schein was one of the leading researchers in culture when cultural theory emerged in the early 1980s. According to this theory, culture is a metaphor for the organisation of the company.
Edgar Schein’s theory is in what we call the functional perspective, where culture serves as a particular function in the organisation.

    Schein emphasizes that the underlying assumptions, those unspoken beliefs, are the true drivers of an organization's culture. They are powerful and complex to change, ultimately defining how a company functions. By analyzing these underlying assumptions, you gain a deeper understanding than just the surface-level structure or metaphors for organization. You see the core values and beliefs that shape the company's operations.

    Thanks a ton for the explanation ? How effective is this model compared to Hofstede's as I wanted to use this model for LEGO as they made changes to their company culture from a traditional to a technical model without losing the core foundations on which LEGO stands for. Thanks

  • @flixabout

    @flixabout

    The model can be used to explain an organization's cultural change. Hofstedets can do that too. I would probably do the analysis with both models and then highlight the aspects where they reach the same result. Then I would highlight the aspects where they do not achieve the same result, and here try to analyze why the results are different. Hope you can use the answer.

    Thanks a lot, question how does this impact managers?

  • @flixabout

    @flixabout

    3 жыл бұрын

    Good question. There are many approaches to that question. But let's start with a sentence - "Culture eats strategy for breakfast". Management must always remember to check whether the changes they want to make are in line with the organisation's basic assumptions. If they're going to make changes in that direction, it requires a considerable effort. Here you can see Kotter's 8 step model - kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y4WLy6-kiNy6gJc.html I hope you can use this approach to your question.

    How does theory affect staff retention

  • @flixabout

    @flixabout

    3 ай бұрын

    @palesamashigoane5550 Thank you for your response. The model does not directly deal with personnel retention. However, you can say that if information and orders come from the top to the bottom of the model, and those at the operational level are never heard higher up, then it will affect staff retention. We hope the answer makes sense. We also hope you tell others about our channel and subscribe.

    @kf3172. Thank you for your interest. Yes, we also recommend using speed 1.25 or 1.5 when listening to our movies. If you want to listen to the speech, read the text of the model itself and the subtitles at the same time, then it is best to stay at 1.00x speed. Thanks again for your interest.
