Hofstede Cultural Framework | International Business| From A Business Professor

Nowadays, cultural diversity is important because our workplaces, schools, and other areas of our lives increasingly consist of various cultural, racial, and ethnic groups. We can learn from one another, but we must first have a level of understanding about each other in order to facilitate collaboration and cooperation.
Learning about other cultures helps us understand different perspectives within the world we live; it also helps dispel negative stereotypes and personal biases about different groups. Additionally, cultural diversity makes our world a more interesting place to live, as people from diverse cultures contribute different ways of thinking, new knowledge, and various experiences. In order to better understand different cultures, scholars have tried various methods to analyze and categorize them.
Today, we are going to study one of the most applicable approaches to understanding cultures: Hofstede’s cultural framework.

Hofstede's Culture Framework in correlation with culture in different societies. The importance of knowing culture norms, and social norms in different countries can make or break your experience overseas. I love the debate between individualism and collectivism- I side with a collective society, even having grown up in the US.

American business culture is different than other business cultures around the world. It is imperative in the United States to understand the cultural background of different people from varying backgrounds to better manage and run a business. Analyzing the six different topics can provide great insight into business decision making.

During my college career, this still remains one of the most interesting videos I have watched. I consider Hofstede's Cultural Framework to be vital knowledge in understanding culture and I wish I would have understood it much sooner. In knowing this framework, I have a basis in understanding other cultures and how they compare to my own.

This is one of my favorite videos from this course. I enjoy learning about different cultures and I am glad that I attend a school that welcomes diversity. I like how Hofstede's Cultural Framework is explained in this video. I felt like the examples given in each dimension were accurate. Coming from a Hispanic background I can confirm that Latin America is a masculine-oriented culture.

Hofstede cultural framework is incredibly useful in the world of business and negotiations. This has been the most interesting thing I've learnt about all semester, spanning all of my classes. The fact that their is a breakdown of a nationality that allows you to quickly grasp the generalities of a country and how to associate and talk with them is incredibly crucial for the world of business.

I never knew what the Hofstede Cultural Framework was before this course, but now that I know what is it, it seems very important when trying to understand culture. Hofstede's cultural framework is important to understand as diversity continues to increase as time goes on. It provides a deeper understanding of many cultures and can be looked up at any time for reference. Understanding each category can provide a lot of information for a specific culture and can be useful when trying to show respect.

I believe this is a good video on Hofstede's theory about how cultures work. Even though he was only looking at one company, I believe he did a great job nailing down some key aspects about different cultures. He hit the nail on the head with individualism and collectivism, and how the U.S. and Europe are more individual, while Middle East countries are more group-oriented and collective as a society. This video is good to explain why some countries do the things they do; great video!

Hofstede's culural framework helps in the breaking down and understanding of how and why societies influence and change the course of business. There is an endless list of factors affecting the trajectory of business, but Hofstede creates a simple and concise understanding of the influence of different curltures. The main point I took away was understanding that every country's businesses are going to be run depending on the culture of the specific country. It is so important to be open to learning of other cultures and how they do business in order to maintain successful business amongst themselves.

I found this video interesting because it does a good job at breaking down the differences that should be highlighted when comparing another culture to ones own. Having the the country recieve these numerical scores to compare to another culture do show the some of the differences in the values of cultures, which is important when visiting a foreign culture and to be respectful. This was an especially interesting video to watch since I hope to work in other countries in the future, by having this outlook and possibly applying the framework to compare a new country to my own counrties' scores, I can see how much adapting I will need to do and what changes to highlight so that I can be successful in my travels.

I enjoyed how this video took Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory and showed how countries created their values. The idea is very simple to understand that countries cultural values are created by the interactions within the country. Many countries are just now receiving foreign investment long enough for us to see how foreign impacts can actually alter a countries value as well. I believe that there is more that can be said about countries and their values beyond just the Hofstede theory, but the theory works well in showcasing it simply.

I never knew there was a system to quantify the differences in culture and business practices in different countries. Excellent video!

This is very well explained, and even though it's just a model, I think it shows us alot about the different types of buisness and how to approach them.

Cultures are the same but different. With this being said, it is still important to learn and keep learning about others. Having diversity is important and a beautiful thing.

This was a very interesting discussion. America is a very individualist country, it's fascinating to think about how other countries around the world take a more collective approach. It's also worthy noting that this country is also very short-term orientated due to the belief that anyone can make it "big".

I really enjoyed this video. It is very interesting to me the difference between the long term and short-term orientation. It makes sense to me that the United States falls under the short-term category. I also liked that with each culture there were countries tied to them to give better ideas of what the culture is like.

I enjoyed watching the video and found it very insightful! I had not heard of the term "power distance" before or many of the terms in this video. Thank you for expanding my knowledge on this topic.

The video discusses Hofstede's cultural framework and its six dimensions, including power distance, individualism vs collectivism, and uncertainty avoidance index. It highlights the importance of cultural diversity in workplaces and the limitations of the model. [00:00] Understanding cultural diversity is crucial in today's workplaces and schools - Cultural diversity contributes to collaboration, dispels negative stereotypes, and makes the world more interesting - Hofstede's cultural framework is a useful approach to understanding cultures - The framework consists of six dimensions, including power distance index, which varies across cultures [02:37] The four cultural dimensions are individualism vs collectivism, uncertainty avoidance index, masculinity vs femininity, and power distance - Individualistic cultures prioritize self-realization and competition, while collectivist cultures prioritize group goals and loyalty - High uncertainty avoidance cultures prefer stability and clear instructions, while low uncertainty avoidance cultures are more willing to take risks and value thinking outside the box - Masculine cultures prioritize achievement and toughness, while feminine cultures prioritize nurturing and tenderness - Power distance refers to the degree of acceptance of unequal distribution of power in a society, with high power distance cultures accepting and even expecting hierarchy and low power distance cultures valuing equality and challenging authority [05:17] Attitudes towards gender and time orientation vary across cultures - Masculine-oriented cultures have defined gender roles and prioritize performance and material success (e.g. Japan, Latin America) - Feminine-oriented cultures prioritize quality of life and relationships, with both genders swapping roles (e.g. Scandinavia, Switzerland, New Zealand) - Long-term orientation emphasizes perseverance and growth, while short-term orientation focuses on immediate success (e.g. traditional Eastern cultures) - Indulgent societies value gratification of human needs and desires, while restrained societies suppress gratification and regulate it through social norms (added in 2010) [07:57] Understanding cultural diversity is crucial for successful communication and relationship management - Hofstede's cultural framework is a valuable tool for understanding cultural differences - Limitations of Hofstede's framework include assuming a one-to-one correspondence between culture and nation-state, cultural bias in research, and exclusion of certain social classes - Different countries have varying levels of indulgence, which can impact societal norms and individual behavior

I think Hofstede's cultural framework is a great model to compare why nations think so differently from one another. I found the individualism vs collectivism especially interesting. Although I am from Hispanic decent, I was born in the United States and as the video mentions I follow the individualism idea. Being independent and taking care of one's family is the most important thing for me, and although I have noticed people from Mexico do find themselves relying on a group for survival more than themselves, it is a principle I would never see myself following. Overall, it is compelling how the United States and Mexico can be neighboring countries, yet they are very different from each other.

I enjoyed learning about Hofstede's Cultural Framework and it was neat to try to guess how the United States ranked within each dimension and then see the answer. However, from the beginning, I was interested in knowing more about Hofstede in order to understand what biases he could have had when creating each measure and ranking each culture. I am glad that this video addressed the limitations of the framework, and wish that we had a framework that was created by a diverse group of people to see less biased results.

This video was by far the best explanation of Hofstede's Culture Framework that I have received in a course. For the most part, other courses would just list out the different categories are. It was much easier to get a grasps on the true meaning of the framework when you look at real life examples of different cultures.

The Long-Term Orientation vs. Short-Term Orientation dimension is interesting to analyze. An example from the video was that one with a long-term orientation would be willing to take blame for a faulty product. In these countries, there is probably more correction and adjustment because the people believe in a future goal. They improve what they have to suit future needs. On the other hand, countries that have a short-term orientation are more likely to terminate efforts if something goes wrong. There is more waste in these countries because they will scrap an idea if it is not fulfilling the requirement.

This video taught me how diversity not only is a good thing but something we need to help diversify culture not only in jobs but all aspects. The framework consist of power distance index- how acceptable, individualism v. collectivism - whether society works together or not, uncertainty avoidance- degree to which a society engages in conflict, masculinity v. Femininity- how harsh gender roles are, long- term v. Short-term orientation- extent to which society views time, indulgence v. Restraint- extent to which society allows gratification.

Hofestede's cultural framework allows you to explain why certain behaviors are more or less common in different cultures. It shows the effects of a society's culture on the values of the members.
