54 year old me sitting here smiling knowing what’s coming for you and waiting for the look on your face while I try to relive my first time hearing these old Metallica songs. It makes me so proud that these are still just as good today as they were way back then. You must see them live! They are so good live. They may not run around the stage quit as much as they used to but they are still amazing live.

They were younger. Likely 21 years old at the time. This song gives a good description of what it would be like sitting in the electric chair. Cliff died during Master of puppets tour / their next album. Trapped under ice is a great song which also describes very well what it must be like to fall through ice and not able to get out.

Obviously you weren't there....but to hear this album as the FOLLOW-UP to Kill 'em All was quite an experience. It was when the metal community KNEW there was something special here, something that would eventually change the game. This was the soundtrack of my freshman year in high school.

Ride the Lightning was their second Studio Album, they still sounded a little like Kill 'Em All, meaning a younger sounding voice, and Master of Puppets was after this album and the first album that they sounded much more musically and vocally mature. So, technically you're listening to them "Grow Up" as the albums get released.

Not even close! The first heavy metal acts are considered to be Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, often referred to as the “unholy trinity”. Led Zeppelin released their self-titled debut in 1969, while Black Sabbath and Deep Purple put out influential records in 1970. Metal began to branch out into sub-genres, with glam and hair metal acts like Motley Crue and Poison spearheading the movement. Thrash metal became huge, with bands such as Metallica and Megadeth reaching ever larger audiences, thanks in part to metal acts being played on MTV, which started airing in 1981. Metallica owes it all to the iconic early metal innovators!

Your reactions are so good, you really get it, I can tell. I’m a Metallica fan since 1993 (age 13). When I discovered that stuff my head was exploiting, it was the first metal band I got really into as well since up to that point I was mostly into classic rock. I remember telling to myself “wow metal kicks ass” and yes it does but I didn’t realised that was not just some “good metal”. That stuff is beyond legendary. I literally can’t find the words to describe my emotions. 30 years passed and every time I hear these albums my heart breaks, every fucking time. How could I know that at the age of 13 I was listening stuff that will be considered as classical music in some years. Seeing you listening to that stuff for the first time and especially when I see you get it right away is priceless. Today I’m a musician myself and I listen to a lot of music from Jazz to Trip Hop to Electro to Black Metal to whatever the fuck else lol but the first 4 Metallica records are literally untouchable by anything or anyone. Fun fact: Although Master of Puppets is my favourite Metallica album as a whole, Fight Fire With Fire and Ride the Lightning are my fav Metallica songs! They’re just sick as fuck!

Ride the Lightning is the second studio album by the American heavy metal band Metallica, released on July 27, 1984, by the independent record label Megaforce Records. The album was recorded in three weeks with the producer Flemming Rasmussen at Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen, Denmark. The artwork, based on a concept by the band, depicts an electric chair being struck by lightning flowing from the band logo. The title was taken from a passage in Stephen King's novel The Stand, in which a character uses the phrase to refer to execution by electric chair. So the recording quality wasnt close to what it is on Master when they really hit it big

I remember going to a music shop in my country (where metal wasn't that available 20 years ago) with a list of heavy metal and thrash tunes to see if they can provide them - It took them 10 days, but eventually i got them, and my reaction listening to Ride the lightning was literally transcending. Point is, i really really envy you for experiencing this for the first time, as the more you become obsessed, the more this will be cherished for you in the future, and also, you got this on video, which is awesome !

You’ve heard a fuck-tonne of tunes off this record. You’ve heard ‘Creeping Death’, ‘Fight Fire With Fire’, ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’, and now ‘Ride the Lightning’ . To answer your questions, ‘RTL’ dropped before *Puppets*. Yes, James’s voice sounds different. He was still trying to sing in an higher register, like his idols in Diamond Head and other NWOBHM bands. Also, they had not yet found the amplifier that was to become synonymous with their sound for the next 5+ years: the Mesa/Boogie Mark 2+ combo amplifier. On *KEA* and *RTL*, I’m pretty sure they were using mostly MarshalL JCM800 amps. The Mesas brought in that dense, in-your-face, mid-range-forward distortion that was all over *Puppets* and *AJFA*. At the same time, James had finally found HIS sound as a metal singer, and it was that heavily distorted, midrange growl that perfectly complemented their new amplifiers. No more high notes-just menacing growls and roaring rage. That’s why we consider 1986-1990 the Golden Era of James’s voice-he stopped the shrieking, became increasingly comfortable with that totally unique growl, and he still hadn’t yet blown his larynx apart in 1991 whilst recording-of all songs-Anti-Nowhere League’s ‘So What’ for a B-side or something.

I think is one of the best solo I ve heard in my life. It starts bluessy.....Then changes to an arpegio of classical music and finishes with the power of Metallica esence....Its very difficult to explain...I hear it over and over again everytime I listen to this song... Thanks Mollyboy.... I dont know if you reacted to "To live is to die" (And Justice for All)......Its shocking! Thats mozart level! I know you ll like it.. Greating from Argentina!!!!!

James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Cliff Burton, and Lars Ulrich are on the first 3 albums: Kill'em All, Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets, which to me are my favorites.... This past summer I got to see them again and for the first time I heard them play live Ride the Lightning and Fight Fire with Fire.... I was speechless!!

"Ride is older than "Puppets. "Ride came out in 1984; "Puppets came out in 1986. There are eight songs on this album. Cliff was with the band on their first three records...he died in 1986 at the age of 24 (they were on the Damage Inc. tour in support of Master of Puppets). I think I answered all of your questions. This is my favourite Metallica record. One of my favourite albums of all time. You mentioned liking Lars; I wholeheartedly agree with you. I've heard a number of reactors say good things about him. Lars does have a lot of detractors, though. It's been fashionable to bash Lars for quite a long time, now. I'm seeing more people take up for him these days. I think there are more and more fans that are getting fed up with all the critics. I'm definitely one of them. I'm not exactly sure what started all of that for certain, but from what I gather it has more to do with Lars's personality than his drumming skills...that, and the whole Napster deal. You might not know about that whole thing, but you can read about it online.

If you look closely at Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets they are VERY similar, at least in structure. And I don't mean that in a negative way, they are 2 of my all time favorite albums. Both start with a face burner that has an interesting intro. Both have the title track 2nd. Both have the differently structured song 3rd. Both have the slower song 4th. The only real difference is the instrumental on RTL is last and on MOP it's next to last. Master is more polished, but RTL is still my favorite. It was my introduction to them, Creeping Death being the first song of theirs I ever heard.

Kill 'em All ('83), Ride the Lightning ('84), Master of Puppets ('86) are the albums Cliff is on. I love this song so much, I always thought James was putting a little Rob Halford (Judas Priest) influence in his vocal delivery - this song is their most "Priesty" song imo. You gotta listen to the instrumental on this album The Call of Ktulu, it's their spooky classical-influenced epic. Cliff's masterpiece.

Yes, earlier than Puppets. Kill ‘83, Lightning ‘84, Puppets ‘86, Justice ‘88, Black Album… Flemming Rassmussen produced Lightning, Puppets, and Justice, and you can hear his progression along with the band’s (and yes, as well as the budget). For Black album, rock hitmaking producer Rob Rock came in and made them more commercial sounding. Never the same again for me.
