I feel like how similar the riff is, people tend to exaggerate that. Metallica/Mustaine definitely made it sound different enough that it isn’t totally obvious. Not as obvious as “Fade to Black” paying homage to “Goodbye Blue Sky” by Pink Floyd, or the obvious riff from Master Of Puppets that was inspired by David Bowie’s “Andy Warhol.” I’d say those ones are definitely more obvious than the “Sweet Home Alabama riff” from The Four Horsemen.

As someone who loves Megadeth from what you've heard of them, this is one of the songs Dave Mustaine wrote while in Metallica and is also given a credit on this album. On Megadeths debut album there's a song called Mechanix which is the same guitar riffs played a little faster with different lyrics.

@markuslausen me either! Back in 86, I was 16 yrs old, had just barely discovered Megadeth's "Peace Sells" album, and instantly loved it. Shortly after that , I heard 2 Metallica songs in passing, Battery and Master of Puppets (brand new songs at the time), and I'm embarrassed to say, wasn't really grabbed by them at first. To my young and inexperienced ears, I thought they sounded almost more punk than metal. So I was originally a Megadeth fan and thought they were the heaviest thing I'd ever heard. Then I heard Kill 'Em All while riding around in a car with friends and was completely blown away. We listened to that cassette, playing in a loop over and over all day long, and I loved every minute of it! From that moment, I was ALL about Metallica! I HAD to get that album. I ended up wearing out 3 cassette tapes for Kill 'Em All and fell in love with the rest of their library. I've been a huge fan ever since.

Those two songs side by side encapsulate the differences between Metallica and Megadeth better than anything ever will. The writing sounds different on this album because Dave Mustaine wrote a good portion of it. This song in particular. You can check the liner notes on the album, and Dave has writing credits on several songs.

great reaction mate, ive not listened to this album for like 20+ years so gave me goose bumps to sing along with it so thankyou. can i make a few suggestions for the next new music monday please............ the time has come for you to meet machine head and it must be the 1st track off their 1st record called davidian, machine head are one of the rare bands that peak with their 1st album when usually a band will take 3+ albums to peak. machine head came into the world in 1994 with the album burn my eyes and it was nothing short of perfect, great riffs, great drums, great solos and the production was on point. they have changed their style many times over the years (sometimes good/sometimes bad) but this album was their masterpiece in my opinion, im not a hater of their other stuff im just a big lover of their 1st album..............oh it must be the music video please for full on 90''s retro awesomeness. the next new band i would like you to try is fear factory, you mentioned in the pantera im broken reaction that you liked the melodic vocals aswell, well fear factory mix clean singing with metal vocals and have been a major player since the very early 90's. you wont get guitar solos from them but you will get killer drums, they use alot of samples and sound effects aswell and are very industrial. everyone will say replica but please dont as its been done like 10 million times, start with zero signal, it has a brilliant mix of clean/heavy vocals and some killer sound effects in it aswell. best way to describe fear factory is if a group of terminators started a band it would be fear factory :)

Idk how much history you know, but Dave from megadeth wrote a lot of this song. Funny enough he added in “sweet home alabama” in part of it, he still laughs about it today. Technically the first solo is soloing over the riff to sweet home alabama.

the KillemAll stuff is always the best in concert. Seek and Destroy and whiplash seem to be the encores of the later shows I went to. I havent been to any of their geriatric tours, Jason was bassist when I last saw them. and it turns out Jason is by far the coolest of them, and you could see that in their own Binge and Purge video way back in the day and every recent interview with Jason shows what an amazing person he is.

It's a song about the time when the whole band had really sore throats - The four hoarse men - It's amazing how young they were, James (19), Lars (19), Kirk (20), Cliff (21) - it's a surprisingly mature album! 👍

A lot of people say the first 4 are the best, and they are really really good, but don’t discount everything after that. The black album catapulted them into the mega famous stratosphere, and for good reason. You already reacted to ‘wherever I may roam’ off that album and it really resonated with you. Load and reload have some absolute gems as well

I grew up in a house where I wasn't allowed to listen to rock. My parents got dicorced and my new step brother was a big rock guy. This was the first rock song I heard pulling a random CD out of his case of 100. I looked at the song titles on the back and, being the little Christian boy I was, I saw this title and thought of the rapture, so I listened. Been a rock fan since. Many things have changed about me but this song takes me back.

Very cool, and very important, that you went back to Metallica's beginnings. Not just to hear how different and raw it is but to hear what started the thrash metal movement! This album was a total game changer!! Enjoy the rest of it as you get to it. The only song I recommend specifically is "Anesthesia-Pulling Teeth". It's an unbelievable bass solo from the late, great Cliff Burton that really highlights his talents!

I was very late to the party when I heard this in the 90's when a friend of mine made me a "best of MetallicA" tape and I liked this one! and from time to time I listened to the album after but, today I felt I liked it even more! don't know why? anyway! thanks again! suggestion Mondays eh? how about a band called Everything Everything with their "No reptiles" song? (maybe you've heard it? they're an English art rock band from Manchester) that song was hooked into my hears for days when I discovered them in 2016! plus that whole album (Get To Heaven) is amazing! love the band too! but it's VERY different from metal and more on the side of Radiohead sometimes! don't know what you would think of it? 🤔they're thinking outside of the box for sure! have fun!🙂

A highlight of their live box set, Binge & Purge, is this song performed in San Diego. During the middle eight when the new riff is introduced, Lars leaves one drum set and runs across the stage to another one, just in time to come back in to the song. It was pretty cool.

The "B" solo in the slower section sounds like that because Kirk recorded two variations of that solo. They couldn't decide which one they liked better, so they used both, hence two guitars at the same time. Personally I prefer the one on the left channel. You can pan right and left and hear each.
