Nothing wrong with that, but Metallica usually won't appeal to people who like death metal, core, djent etc. It will appeal to people who occasionally listen to classical music and are primarily drawn to emotional music.

84? Okay, let us assume that they were writing it during the time after writing their debut so probably 83. Venom with their "Don't Burn the Witch" from 1982 "Black Metal". Hellhammer "Chainsaw" or "Decapitator" or "Blood Insanity" or - quite frankly - anything from their 1983 "Death Fiend' and "Triumph of Death" demos. To this day nothing slaps as hard as those demos remastered for 2008 "Demon Entrails" compilation. Bathory with "Hades", "Necromancy" & "Armageddon" from their 1984 debut "Bathory" This being said. I think that Metallica is one of the greatest band of all time. Probably THE greatest. But their power is not in being the heaviest - it is by being one of the heaviest and having awesome melodies, writing and being able to present the heavines to the masses and make it mainstream in less than a decade. Yes, those bands above are legendary and crucial, being responsible for creating Black Metal and extreme Metal as a whole. But no one can deny, that their works of the days are - although argueably heavier - at the same time also more simplistic, sometimes intentionally primitive. Metallica on the other hand had the versatility to not stay one note one style and were able to modernize and adjust their sound through the years while still undeniably being Metallica.

One thing you have to keep in mind while listening to RTL is the fact they were 19 and 20 years old (!) while recording it. Tracks like Fade To Black and The Call of Ktulu are incredibly well crafted, especially for someone so young. And if you compare it to their thrash peers of the time (Slayer, Anthrax, Exodus), they were just *miles* ahead and it's easy to see how Metallica became so legendary.

It’s easy to forget that it’s mainstream now, but it wouldn’t have been mainstream until the mid-to-late 80’s and especially the early 90’s because they made it mainstream. When this came out, they were still very much underground, and this and the previous album would have sounded nothing like anything else at the time. It’s easy to look back on it and critique it with the hindsight of almost 40 years of influence that this and their subsequent albums would have had on the bands and albums that came after this. It truly was groundbreaking for the time.

Every generation has to keep your point in mind. Us Metallica fans of the 1980s often failed to understand what The Beatles did and even The Beatles' fans often failed to grasp the huge influence that Buddy Holly had on groups like The Beatles and of course, The Hollies (named for Buddy Holly!). Metallica (mostly James) AND Dave Mustaine changed the metal landscape in a massive way and their peers are usually also their fans because of that fact.

You don’t like the drums because you’ve been told not to like it.

Reasons to hate metallica: their name (slip knot?), the dudes voice (manson?), don't want ro be guy with long hair and beard (dime bag?), Napster (that was like 25 years ago), mainstream (but korn and slip knot are not? Plus, metallica became more mainstream after the black album not before)

Fr you don't have to make up contradictory criticisms to dislike certain art. For me it's jazz, I recognize they're all technically proficient and gifted musicians, and they put a lot of time into their craft, but jazz has just never sounded pleasant to my ears on a basic music level.

I'm totally the opposite of you... I really like that these guys don't just being loud for the sake of being loud, just being heavy for the sake of being heavy. ...they have all the versatility to use all 'tools' such as melodious, lyrics, what you called 'classical guitar sounds', good song structures, whatever to convey the message and to create the intended mood to support the message... and the ability to know the 'appropriateness' of using certain technique for certain song that emphasize the message of the particular song.. I don't know whether I explain myself clearly or not. I myself not a metalhead -meaning being that one person that appreciate only heavy and fast music and consider anything below it as lame and boring music. Metallica is one of a few bunch of metal bands that I believe earn the respect of those who really appreciate great music as great music, beyond any limited scope and view of only one of particular genre of music. that's my two cents.

I don't know what you mean by "mainstream metal" I would like to mention that Metallica was not on the radio until the 90s really. My experience of finding Metallica in the 80s was through literal word of mouth from friends. They were popular in the metal scene, but until the Black Album were not well known. Thrash metal was not popular or played much on radio or TV, which is to say that only major way to find new music back in pre-internet times. It was a genre that you had to go find.

It wasn't mainstream back then. It was underground.

1984. Nothing like this existed then. They single handedly invented a genre. Not to mention they were 21 year old kids!

Bro, I’m 4 songs in and listening to Fade to Black. If that song doesn’t do something to you, maybe we are just in different mind spaces. I think Fade to Black is one of the best created pieces ever. It’s Metallica when they were raw, but it’s actually a polished version of them, although extremely early. Immediately, my fav Metallica song of all time. Plus the meaning behind the song is super deep. Not a lot of metal bands (mostly none) had deep lyrics at this time.

The best i can describe this dude listening to Metallica for the first is like someone whose only listened to modern rock guitar players who watch EVH for the first time and are like " yea that guy is alright" 😂 Props for keeping an open mind, but seriously, in the kindest way, you need to "unfuck" your mind. "Did they have effects back then?" LOL like whut? Its not like they played in the 1880s my guy.

You can tell that all of the people writing hate comments got triggered by the title and didn't even watch the video. If they did, they would have seen that throughout the album you absolutely recognized Metallica's influence on literally everyone, and by the end you gave them mad respect. You're even willing to listen to more. So what's the problem, people? He didn't hate it! Listen to Master of Puppets next. It's not only their best album, but also considered by many to be THE greatest metal album of all time.

To be clear, nothing against you. Gave you a thumbs up. It's actually interesting for me to hear these 'unusual' perspectives. But just to reiterate once again... Fade to Black is one of the greatest songs they ever wrote. Calling it 'classical guitar' is a misunderstanding of what classical is. And I think this is the first time I've ever heard (in over 40 years) someone refer to 'pretty' and 'melodic' music in a negative way.

Some of their main inspirations were bands like Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, Ramones, Motorhead, Venom, Mercyful Fate, Diamond Head. Chances are Metallica is your favorite bands favorite band.

No disrespect but clearly he doesn't know this is the best Metallica album and one the greatest metal-albums of all time.

If you want to hear them playing a 1000 miles an hour, than listen to their first album "Kill 'em All"!!!!

Cliff didn’t make a mistake in “For Whom the Bell Tolls”. Everyone in the band loved Cliff, and they loved his bass playing, and they more or less would take any opportunity - like that one - to give him a chance to stand out. So… Not only was it not a mistake, it was a feature. Cliff didn’t make mistakes when recording.

You must be a lot younger than I, I'm 47 and when this album came out, they were the BEST of the BEST., you are thinking of the 97-05 Era metallica. Lars is what you would call a Guitarist drummer. He doesnt stay in beat 100% he plays to go along with the guitars. He is a master at hitting off beat stuff to throw you off, his time changes are sick. He's not the best drummer in the world, but only Lars can play drums for Metallica. The albums are great, well most, but Metallica live, not many bands and give this kind of energy live for 2+ hr's, even in their 60's now 2+hr's..

Dude, this album came out in 1984.. Metal was not mainstream then and they were still an underground sort of phenomenon. It was not until 1989 until they hit the mainstream. They are brilliant and talented. Some of the very best!!

I can say that Master of Puppets (The album directly after this one) is much much more polished and is maybe even more of an iconic album to the thrash scene from this one. It's really where they hit their stride with their style, and it's the last album with Cliff Burton (Their original bassist) on it. I'd give that one a listen as well.

I am torn. Part of me is so very excited that you are taking the dive, as critical as you may be. I am mostly excited to learn your feedback, but something got cut out from your experience. I was hoping to hear the outros to each song, but I guess you have your app programmed to crossfade into continuous playback. Go back sometime without the crossfade, my favorite outro is at the end of the first track. Not hearing it was quite jarring, and I wonder if your appreciation for the track may have increased having heard it. The sound is of the aftermath of the explosion, basically a sonic representation of scorched earth. You can really hear a loud, low-end crackling. I like the texture of it, so don't miss it. Cheers, cool reation.

I think your expectations are way too high my friend. Relax. Stop looking for technicality that wasn't even in the forefront of any bands at that time. What Metallica brought was a new sound and an energy that was unheard of at that time. They infused so many inspirations to create and evolve their sound. With Fade to Black, you gotta realize that just because a song is metal or from a metal band doesn't mean the point is to be heavy, the point can be the beauty and emotion, with the metal aspects just adding a little edge to it.

Love how you gave them a chance! The way you analyzed the songs and weren't afraid to say some were kinda bad is how reactions should be. Also loved how you pointed out it may take you awhile to grow into some of the songs like Escape and Trapped Under Ice. It took me awhile to grow into those songs, too. Awesome video!

I know it's a matter of taste, but I'm yet to see any reasonable person say James' voice was annoying.

It was popular to dunk on Metallica because people are always happy to hate someone popular. Popularity by proxy. If you can notice an imperfection in them, it is supposed to make you better and more deserving. Kind of like the author of this video. When he was laughing at a drum fill and saying something to the effect of "haha Lars come on play that again" I thought to myself: "Lars wrote this drum fill before you were alive and decades before you've learned anything that you know about music". Well, at least he is listening to the band now, so he may be on the right track if it is not just for show.

This was not mainstream in 1984. Metallica didn’t get much recognition outside of the metal scene until *…And Justice For All*., and they got no play on mainstream radio until the ‘Black Album’. Also, you nailed what makes thrash metal different from anything that came before: the influence of punk rock. Before there was ‘thrash metal’, there was ‘thrash’-a subgenre of punk. Metallica combined the DIY ethos, street cred/authenticity, confrontational attitude, and, of course, guitar tone of thrash punk with the technical proficiency of bands from the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal (just look it up; if you want to know what influenced Metallica’s sound, research this. Or, just listen to the songs they’ve covered; that’s more fun.)

Exactly. They where far too heavy for any normies chart music. I mean I like that too. But I'm a metal head at heart. Kill em all and justice for all were my faves by Metallica. Faith no more, iron maiden, sisters of mercy. So many bands that changed the metal scene. People say linkin park and limp biscuit started all the rap rock. But faith no more were 1st and they were amazing

"More complex than I was expecting" ... If this statement says anything, it's unfamiliarity with what huge portions of metal are as a musical style. Some of the riffs on this album are so savage, I'm still routinely stunned by them almost 40 years later. And even as good as this album is... The two albums to either side of it (Mater of Puppets, And Justice for All) are even better. Not like a little bit better. Like defining a genre for over a generation, better. I'm more of a classical music geek at heart, so for me And Justice for All is basically the Magnum Opus of Metal Music.

Man, imagine listening to this album for the first time again. These guys were my biggest reason for picking up drumsticks 25 years ago.🤘🏽😎🤘🏽

Everyone is a critic. Everyone has been thought that their opinion is somehow important. It is also kind of funny to me when I see a reactor reading up on a track, getting notes for it, and then stopping every 10 seconds saying what exactly the band did here and there. If a song alone is not enough for you, then maybe music is not for you in general. Listen first, and then analyze. Otherwise it's just a formed opinion parroting 'what people think' from the previous read-up plus your trying to decide what you like and don't like, what to bash it for and for what it should be "dryly praised" because we are big experts here and emotions are unprofessional and we should always have pluses and minuses and something to say without actually saying anything to avoid copyrights yada-yada-yada.

He is entitled to his criticism but at the same time everyone is entitled to their criticism of his review.

The reason there are no gaps is because whoever uploaded this removed the space between tracks. Also, Metallica didn't really reach mass appeal until their self-titled 5th album "the black album". That was the start of Hetfield's transition to trying to sing more.

whatever makes you happy… sad you’re missing a lot over the years, the good thing you’re becoming more open to these. Why would you hate the blue print of the bands you have been listening to? This is a seminal album. Seems like hating Metallica is just for a pose for views.

This is like someone evaluating Elvis through the lense of Black Sabbath. Can't compare the foundations with the future like that.

Ride the Lightning (the album): there's no point trying to "invent" pseudo defects. Masterpiece. Fact. Another detail: you can't have a Dave Lombardo (Slayer) in every thrash metal band. Idiosyncratically weak arguments, it's a shame...It can destroy Metallica albums like Load, Reload, St. Anger, but Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, Kill 'Em All: that's embarrassing, being a laughing stock...OK, you have your sacred right to opinion, to differ, to criticize, but it is mandatory to have plausibility in criticism. Otherwise it's pathetic...

You have to remember, what you say sounds basic, was cutting edge in the early 80s. They paved the way. Everything sounds basic when it’s 40 years old compared to today.

Metallica was anything but a mainstream band at this point. They were young, angry teens playing in the same stale beer and tobacco smelling venues as Slayer and other early Thrash metal bands. It wasn't until their 5th self-titled album that they adopted the more radio friendly sound and their popularity outside of metal circles truly exploded. But that change in style and genre also alienated a lot of metalheads who were saddened to see their favourite band becoming watered down and mainstream rock band. You are not wrong about the Punk influence. Thrash metal was basically born when they mixed Hardcore punk to Motörhead and turned intensity and speed to 11.

This is probably the first hour long YT vid I've watched. Not going to lie I stuck with it out of spite. There are so many things I could be negative about but because of how you start and finish, I'll keep it positive. After Ride the Lightning where you talk about how it parallels with punk and you end it with "I don't know what I'm talking about" ...actually you're spot on. They do have punk influence and their first two albums very much live in the same space with the garage sound and eff you attitude. I've always felt the same way when I go back and listen to those albums. It's metal that also has that raw punk heart to it. Great call on the Trapped Under Ice riff that gives off some KMFDM vibes. Never would have connected it but I can certainly see where you get that. The more hear it the more I need to see what else overlaps in their music. Solid comment on music sometimes taking time to resonate with you. Some of my favorites now took playing an album over and over to make me realize they were the true gems. And in the same breath you saying "Creeping Death, this has to be heavy...Metallica please be heavy!" Here I am just waiting with a smile on my face knowing one of their most banger riffs is coming. Overall man glad you enjoyed it. You seem like you would enjoy anything 80s from Metallica, maybe some selections of Garage Inc. Also adorable Pom, really lightened me up at the end. Raised two and they are fantastic dogs.

About the first metal gallop triplet, Its Deep Purple " Hard Lovin Man " from the In Rock album (1970).

dude, first 4 albums of Metallica are golden this one is number 2 out of them. This is absolute classic this is what we love them for. Then they decided to go masses to go pop and that is whole 90s and since 00s they trying to reverse that with more or less success. And these first 4 albums have SO much influence on anything else after them that just MUST know them for simple educational purposes. And this album bit raw but they were very young, and say 7 string guitars would make that heavy riff in Escape sound completely different, there was no 7 string guitars back then:) they were opening the whole genre for everyone else, Slayer came with first album same year as this on 1984, and back then there were no soundegeneers understanding what they doing related to this style of music just listen to Show no Mercy album, echo just killing it entirely. So this album sounds actually pretty good in that regard:) ..

Before this? Motorhead. Oh, and there is nothing wrong with the drumming, its just not the greatest mix ever, when it comes to the drums. The album, in general, has this issue, in my opinion but i still love it. I completely disagree with you about playing those riffs only sparingly. It is the essence of Metallica that those riffs become like bass lines and the repetition is the basis to most of their music. Their music is like classical compositions in that percussion is not just background music either. In fact no instrument is given short shrift. The James Hetfield thing? lol. Mate, with your music taste i suggest you find a new career...this just ain't going to work out for you. You've struggled to appreciate the rawness of this album, which is a fault. I think these guys were about 21 when they made this album, and they were pioneers of the sound you've just heard. I'm going to leave it there because i've never been more disappointed by a reactor's music knowledge in nearly a decade of listening to reactors. Hey, its your channel so knock yourself out but the amount of subscribers is telling...ever thought of labouring?

Fade to black is not "ok" its one of their best songs ever and the best song in ride to lightning, dont get me wrong their isnt a single bad song in this album bot fade to black is the best with creeping death being a close second.

Bro... The amount of talent that this guys had in that era is something I can't understand now in my forties. It's amazing! And it still giving me the same emotions that I had the first time I listened to them... All the harmonies are played by them on all tracks. You gotta have in mind that this was and still is an inspiration for all metal bands. For Metallica the new wave of british heavy metal was the shit... And they were inspired by it and make it faster. Great video, man!

Released in 85. What sounds old and maybe predictable now was original at that time. And as another comment said they were barely 20 yrs. old.

This isn't the best recording of this album to listen to since whoever uploaded it took out all of the pauses in between tracks. That's not how it sounds on the album! There are pauses. Listening to it like this really ruins it for a first time listener because you're going to think that's how it is on the album.

"I'm not sure if the lyrics are cool or lame". Well let me tell your first problem, these lyrics are not supposed too be cool, the point of the song is the story written in it. They didn't just slap a bunch of bs lyrics together and go yeah that sounds cool. It's ok that you were not smart enough to understand the lyrics in these songs, actual songwriting is just not for you and that is ok.

As a massive Metallica fan, I enjoyed your reactions to this. I could see you getting in to several bits of the album and some other stuff wasn't to your taste. But you hit the nail on the head, this album along with Metallica's other early work was absolutely groundbreaking and they have influenced countless other bands and musicians. For me, its one of those albums that just gets better the more you listen to it, but unquestionably it sounds dated compared to modern music. But, thats part of the charm for me. Old Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer just capture a magic movement and I love the raw sound on their early stuff. Hopefully in time you'll grow to love some of Metallica's stuff.

Nothing Metallica did in the 80s was mainstream. They were a garage band.

no, to answer your question. Metallica does not suck. They are somewhat dated unfortunately. But still Very good in their own right. They inspired most the metal out there these days. They have also helped so many people and you cant ever take that away from them. Legends.

For a commentator, you sure don't know much. Why don't you research a little better. before making a review video. Also I don't think your "hate' on the drumming is original, your comments about "punk' all those have been addressed in the past. At least you have the decency to state "you don't know what you're talking about" that's very clear lol. Stick to new metal my guy. Beside, they were not "mainstream" at the time.
