Hiking the White Mountains | Mt Adams & Mt Madison | NH 4K

This weekends hike took me up to Mt Adams and Mt Madison in the Presidential Range of the White Mountain National Forest.
I parked at Appalachia and took the Airline trail up to Mt Adams. A nice steady trail IMO with outstanding views once breaking tree line. There are approximately 3 false summit areas for Mt Adams where you think you are there but.....well...you are not. The final ascent up Adams is super rocky but a lot of fun.
I took the Israel? Path down Adams to the Gulfside trial and followed Gulfside back to the Madison Hut where I then ascended Mt Madison. A relatively quick climb from the hut with a few tricky areas. Nevertheless excellent views to be had on the trail heading up and from the summit.
I ended up coming back down Valley Way on my exit and ended up camping at Valley Way Tent Site. I arrived around 2:30pm and got the last remaining tent area. It seems most people dropped their stuff off, set up, and then headed up the mountain. Hind sight is 20 20. Nice relatively smooth walk out Valley Way the next morning.
Some nice waterfalls to be seen off the trail on the way down.

    Hi Chris! I don't know how many times I've watched this video. I just watched it again. I really like it. You are a great hiker and a great video maker! Thank you so much. (I tried to make videos but I'm horrible at it) You are very inspiring to hiker wannabes like myself. By the way... steep? just take your time? You lied to me! HA!

    Great Vid brings back fond memories. Wife and I did that hike as part of our 48's a few years back quite a strenuous hike when you combine them both together for a day hike but was a nice feeling of accomplishment. We are 18 months away from retirement and plan to hit them again when we do.

    Just finished this yesterday with a bunch of friends. We came back down from Adams through Star lake trail and hit Star lake first which was amazing, you kinda missed that. Although the descent is pretty steep and taxing, star lake was so worth it. knees are gone btw. Great video, keep them coming!

    Awesome video. What are your thoughts on doing a 3 day presidential hike? Day 1 being Appalachia to valley way tentsite then day 2 being valley way up to Madison then over to lake of the clouds hut and day 3 bring lake of the clouds hut to mount Webster. Do you think this is doable and stuff?

  • @ChrisGoesOutdoors

    @ChrisGoesOutdoors

    5 жыл бұрын

    Definitely doable. Tho I think that would require a night stay at the actual lake of the clouds hut. There is no "legal" camping there that I am aware of. Just something to take into consideration as those huts fill up with reservations really quick.

    can you suggest some good overnight hikes in the area and where to camp. I've never gone up to the white mts. but i just invested in a quite a lot of money in some good gear and i wanna do a 1-2 night backpacking trip but I'm worried about not being able to find a place to camp not knowing the area and trails etc. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Other than he valley way camp site...is camping allowed anywhere else around the Madison and Adams mountains? I want to take a big loop including those 2 over a few days this July. Any tips or suggestions for camping with a dog fairly lightweight would be a giant plus too. Cheers brother!

    There was a tentsite on the bottom side of Madison where you come down from the AT but I believe the site at Valley Way is the only "legal" campsite. I have about 0 insight on camping with a dog though haha

  • @ChrisGoesOutdoors

    It fills up VERY early. I think most of the cars get there maybe even Friday night as it is probably the quickest access to the Madison Hut. But ya I would definitely get there early. I drove by there at about 7am on a Saturday on my way to do the Percy Peaks this year and cars were already on the side of the street. Enjoy the hike though. This is a great one!

    I dont know if its actually legal but people do it all the time. I was actually parked on the side when I made this video. You are pretty far off the road though but ya no signage stating otherwise. From what I heard too I think you can park at the gas station down the street a bit but they charge you a couple bucks. Not sure how true that is though. I think I read it on a trip report. Have never done it personally or known anyone else who did
