Solo Backpacking in the Presidential Range of New Hampshire's White Mountains

Drove the van up to New Hampshire this weekend hike up the Presidential Range. Crossed over some areas I hadn't been to in a few years. Even spent some time re-walking the AT. While on this section of trail in 2017 during my AT thru hike I had a terrible cold and felt like a walking zombie. Was nice to give it another visit and really take in the scenery. Was greeted with a beautiful cloud / fog show as it hit the morning sunlight and then absolutely amazing weather the rest of the day. Spent a solid 6-7 hours above treeline taking everything in.
Camped out in my van Friday night, hiked starting around 4am Saturday and camped on trail that night. Woke up early and drove home the next morning.
An absolutely amazing weekend.

    A lot of people have been asking about trail names, and peaks names and why I have not been mentioning them in videos lately. I have addressed this in some previous videos but I will copy and paste from another comment. I hope you all understand. "I have been purposefully leaving the names of the peaks and trails I have been taking out of the videos lately. I didn't / don't want my videos to possibly contribute to the overcrowding and literal trashing of the trails thats been occurring lately. With everyone trying to escape outside since covid it appears nobody did research on the basic principals of hiking / backpacking or the principals of Leave No Trace. If they did then they just don't seem to care. The amount of toilet paper, feces, and trash I have seen literally on or next to the trail in the last couple weeks is absolutely mind boggling. I am hoping to the add the names to the trails and peaks back in eventually hopefully once things kind of settle down up there a bit. I know a lot of people use the videos to plan their adventures. I did the same when I started hiking up in the Whites. Its part of the reason I started this channel. With that said, I have a video up in some way shape or form for I believe every 48 4k and 52 wav peak. Some maybe in my AT series, and also my Pemi Loop series" Here is an article about the issue www.nhpr.org/post/trouble-trails-forest-service-grapples-crowds-trash-and-human-waste#stream/0 Here you can learn about leave no trace (LNT) principals lnt.org/why/7-principles/

    I was wondering if this would happen, I feel the White Mountains may be a tad underrated, a hidden gem. Cannot beat the presidential range, I could stand on the ridge or in between mountains in awe for hours. Truly beautiful, cant wait to see what you put together for this. Another great video from Chris as well.

    Really nice video. I especially like your music selection. My wife watches a lot of depressing news on TV, but I occasionally get control of the remote, and when I do, I put on an uplifting backpacking video like yours. I’m 53 now and have made it a REAL goal to go back and hike it again the summer of 2022 - I have a lot of training to do. This piece has inspired me and I’m sure I will come back and view it many times. Excellent video. Thanks for the inspiration.

    Great video, Chris! The quality of your videos is now right up there with some of the most popular hiking youtubers. This one was really terrific -- it's one of the best videos I've seen about the Presidentials. You've come a long way since your Mount Moosilauke video from 4 years back! I would suggest mentioning some of the names of the major trails/summits...or at least give a description of the route in the notes. Even though I'm pretty familiar with the Presidentials, with the fog I sometimes couldn't orient myself as I was following along. At least Eisenhower is unmistakable! Great job-- keep 'em coming!

  • @ChrisGoesOutdoors

    @ChrisGoesOutdoors

    4 жыл бұрын

    Haha thanks Marco. It has definitely been a journey. Hoping to revisit many of the 4ks to hopefully better capture that area. As far as not mentioning the trails or summits I’ve been doing that on purpose lately. The mountains have been seeing a massive influx of new people and the crowding has got pretty insane. Another comment on this video asked if I saw toilet paper and the like all over the trail like he did going up a different trail and that was my experience as well. My hope by not giving the trail name or the summit names is people will do their own research and hopefully stumble across some stuff about LNT or maybe they choose a different mountain or way up but in a similar location. Silly? Perhaps but it’s just where my minds been. I thought about releasing a video about LNT principles but I feel like the people that would watch it and see why it’s important are not the type of people who need to be taught haha

    What a beautiful hiking spot!! Would love to do it someday! Like the tunes too man! We have "the Great Range" in the Adirondacks where i live. Very similar beauty! The mountains are just a whisker smaller, with Mt. Marcy 5,344 feet being NY's biggest mountain. 8 mountains total in the great range. But we also have the ADK 46'er club which are a series of 46 mountains all over 4,000 feet. I have only done a small handful of them, Big slide mountain is so far my favorite. So many awesome places to hike in the US!! Keep our forests clean! Stay safe! Hike on!

    @@ChrisGoesOutdoors Heck yeah man its awesome out here, out there too.! The 46' high peaks can get crowded at certain times of the year but still worth it. Lately i've actually been staying in the north western part of the Adirondacks, Wilcox lake wilderness area and Pharoah wilderness, to avoid the crowds. Crane mountain is a pretty nice one and Black mountain in the Lake George wilderness area, which i highly reccommend if your ever in the lake george area. Hurricaine mountain is awesome, in Keene valley. At the moment i'm not doing anything over 3500ft. We got alot of beautiful leanto, lake side camping aswell! Fire towers galore! its nice! I am definitely jealous you got to do the Colorado Trail!! Thats awesome! Its on my bucket list for sure! Hope you make it out this way someday! Oh and lastly the NPT trail and or (Northville Placid Trail) is our longest trail in New York. Its a 135 miles long and has only one resupply 75% of the way through in the town of Long Lake. The NPT starts in Northville NY. Totally recommend that one!! Thanks alot for the reply man! Love all your content!! Stay safe! Hike on!

The hipbelt is arguably unnecessary for the weight I usually carry on these hikes but I really like having the pockets. I store all my camera related stuff in them. Chris, loved your video. So peaceful in these times of noise and pandemic. Bought back memories of mid May 1984 hike over the Presidentials, camping/caretaker huts. My girlfriend (and Wife now) did Hermit Lake to Mizpah, clear skies, in high 80's. Next day all day snow. Gotta love the Whites! With great interest I noticed what I assumed compression socks. What brand? During my Camino hike I had lower extremity swelling, and got compression Sox in Spain. My Doc said venous insufficiency from too many years on feet as RN, and being an old geezer at 66 years. I have tried a bunch this year, finally sett!ing on Darn Tough OTC Athletics (style 1104), and Insect Shield OTC compresion. I combine with Injini's. How has your compression Sox quest gone? Review? I plan to finish the Long Trail this fall. I will try my new Gossamer Gear the One tent I got this winter for now cancelled Scotland hike. A change of pace after years of tarping. Anyway, keep up your video style. Good Zen! Be well! Brownie

    Summer then winter sounds free White Mountains haha. The socks are just some random brand I found on amazon. SB Sox. I used the sockwell ones on the AT and CT but they do not hold up well at all. I had holes in my CT ones after 2 weeks of hiking. Which sucks as they were great otherwise. They were a wool, nylon, spandex(?) blend so odor wasnt crazy after a couple days. These ones are ok. They are mostly nylon, I dont think any wool at all. But they have been ok so far. Again, I dont really use them for the compression benefits. If there are any benefits I havent noticed them. I mainly just use them for sun and tick protection. Good to hear from you again!

    Sun protection and tick / bug protection. I spray them with permethrin. Kind of my happy medium over wearing pants.
