Mount Madison, a split ascent up one of New Hampshire's most scenic peaks in White Mountains

Спорт

At 5,366 feet in elevation in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, Mount Madison is the northernmost mountain in the Presidential Range. Mount Madison and the Presidentials, including nearby Mount Adams, Mount Jefferson and Mount Washington all rise well above treeline into the alpine zone. Weather can be very changeable and harsh without much notice. On this trip, we lucked out with clear skies, but a steady wind.
We were joined with by our friends Greg, Barb, and Patrick on this hike. We began at the Great Gulf Trailhead on Route 16, just outside of Gorham. From there we followed the Great Gulf Trail to the Osgood Trail. At that trail junction, Jeff headed up the Osgood Trail, while the rest of the group continued on Great Gulf Trail to the Six Husbands Trail, then to the Madison Gulf Trail, then along the Parapet Trail and reconnected with the Osgood Trail for an ascent to the summit of Mount Madison.
From the summit the entire group descended down to the Madison Spring Hut, where we had a good long rest. From there we took the Star Lake Trail to the Buttress Trail, descended the Buttress Trail to the Six Husbands Trail, down that trail to the Great Gulf Trail and finally back out the Great Gulf Trail to the trailhead.
This was a 12.5+ mile hike with about 4,300 feet of elevation gain. We'd classify this as a difficult hike, with rock scrambles, a few small climbs over large rocks, and then a very long and rocky descent on the Buttress Trail.

For sure! The White Mountains are some our very favorite mountains and the Presidentials are the very best of the entire area, so a hike there never disappoints (even when the weather does). We lucked out with great conditions overall, at least 2/3 of the time most of those mountains are in the clouds.

The route less travelled to get up Madison. I like it. I'm looking forward to get back into the Great Gulf to explore some more of the trails there.

For sure. Once you get past the Osgood Trail it feels very remote and there’s not a ton of us (or trail maintenance as you saw in video). Definitely a place we want to go explore so more. Felt so removed from the rest of the nearby Presidentials and their trails.

Go for it! The trails on the northern side of Madison (from Appalachia) are all in a lot better shape, see more maintenance, and just get more use in general. It seems all the trails in the Great Gulf (besides the Osgood Trail as the AT) tend to be a bit more wild, less maintained and more rugged to follow.
