Hiking the White Mountains | Mt Isolation Overnight | NH 48 4k

Hiked Mt Isolation up in the White Mountains of New Hampshire this past weekend. We did it as an overnight. We parked at the Glen Ellis Falls Trail head and took the Glen Boulder Trail up. This trail is no joke. Nice elevation gain in very little mileage, some nice scrambles, but some great views! The entire hike seemed to have epic views. I would definitely consider doing it on a good weather day.
Path we took:
Glen Ellis Falls trail head
Glen Boulder Trail
Davis Path toward Mt Isolation trail
to Mt Isolation
Approximately 6 miles one way (12 total) with 5050 ft of total elevation gain!

    Just got back from doing this as a day hike. Tacked on Boott Spur for that extra elevation and views. That hike back up the Davis Path is daunting when you look at it from Isolation summit. Lovely way to bag Isolation. #46 for me.

    Thanks for sharing your trip man. Probably one of the best I've seen. I really like how you trace your path of where you came from with your finger. Makes my imagination run. I hope to get out soon. I'd love to wake up to a sunset like that. My anxiety normally gets the best of me though. I seriously use your calm nature as motivation. Thanks. Gabe

    This is a great video! I'm planning an overnight to Mt. Isolation in a couple weeks myself. I noticed you camped on the summit. Do you think there are any flat spaces below the summit? My ideal plan is for us to ascend via Glen boulder, camp within 0.5 miles of the summit, and then summit mt. isolation for sunrise the next morning.

    Sarah, there was one area I can recall specifically that I remember thinking we could definitely stay there. It wouldve fit 2 small tents no problem. There was also options near the summit. I wont go into too much detail but give the area a little bit of exploration and I think you can find something that will work. This was a great hike. More challenging than I anticipated but a great hike nevertheless

    So what time of year did you do this hike if you don't mind my asking. I had commented on your Stairs Mt video I plan to do Mt Isolation Memorial day weekend. Big loop starting at the Rocky Branch Trail head off 16 in Jackson. Looks like Late May or June, I see some snow patches in your video. I was planning on packing up extra water because I have heard the same. "No water between isolation trail (west) and junction with Davis Path, to summit of Isolation. But you mentioned numerous small run offs, what are your thoughts?

  • @ChrisGoesOutdoors

    @ChrisGoesOutdoors

    2 жыл бұрын

    Ya this was the first week of June when we went. I think we passed 4 different run offs on the way down boot spur to Isolation. Very well could have only been flowing from rain the day before or something.

    I can make a little map of this hike, kind of like in Not WIthout Peril... somewhere after Glen Boulder, husband breaks first hiking pole. Reach Davis Path, 75mph winds knock both hikers down.... halfway to Isolation, husband breaks second hiking pole (somewhat intentionally). Summit of Isolation - both have stopped talking to each other for the next 4 miles. During the return trip the winds were much worse. ( we learned later winds reached 90mph on the summit of washington... this was not predicted in mountain forecast for that day ) we had just cleared the worst of it below treeline when a massive maple tree crashed down behind us. Without doubt, of the 25 4Kers we've done this was the worst time hiking we've had so far. We argued a lot and were quite frustrated the whole 11 hours. The wind was BLINDING on the way down, and the little strings in my hoodie were gouging my eyes out. The rocks were tilted in that tortuous way to never give you good footing. Much frustration and anger was had in that hike... Hopefully owls head will be nicer. And less windy.

    Those winds above treeline are no joke, gets scary really quick. Glad you made it out!
