Hiking the Cobb Valley - Overnight to Fenella Hut, Kahurangi National Park

A gorgeous and cruisy overnight trip up the famous Cobb Valley in Kahurangi National Park. From the road end, I check out all the gorgeous huts along the way, and take the side trip to see Lake Cobb and Round Lake before spending a comfortable night at Fenella Hut.

I love those reconstructed huts and the history of the area. What is surprising is that it took so long to designate Kahurangi as a National Park when it contains so many treasures. We are so lucky to have such places. Wonderful documantation of your exploration. Thank you for sharing your holiday.

Always appreciate your comments Robin. An incredible area with such diversity. Every park/NP has its own unique look and feel, and I loved the Kahurangi.

Thanks very much for your support. I car camped the day before to pass some bad weather. Always prefer waiting for a good window!

Great variety of huts, some historic. Thanks for sharing your experience and your enthusiasm! How bad is the road in to the campsite? Suitable for a regular car (obviously not in winter conditions)? I read warning on the DOC website. Also about sandflies but I guess that's more a summer thing? What did you use to record your video? The quality is excellent and you've obviously spent a great deal of time editing it. What software did you use?

Thanks for your comment and kind words. At the time of my trip I thought the road in was absolutely no worries for 2WD. Just took it slow and steady. The sandflies during the tramp were fine, but I car camped a couple of nights at the Cobb campsite and they were terrible! I film with a Canon R50 and GoPro Hero 10. During this month long trip I filmed all the tramps in 1080p to save space but now regret not filming in 4k like I usually do. Recently changed to editing with DaVinci Resolve after my old software became obsolete. Mixed thoughts about it. Cheers

Great trip, as usual. What is the burgundy/brownish stuff on Cobb Lake? An invasive species the DOC should get rid of?

Hey. I didn't walk any of it but was initially considering traversing the Lockett Range south from there, so read a bit about it online
