Tramping Overnight to Leitch's Hut, Whareorino Conservation Area

A very cruisy weekend trip, hiking for a few hours through nice bush to spend the night at Leitch's Hut, a comfortable spot that sits on land once farmed in the early 1900s.

Heh heh I love the way someone changed the distance on the sign, probably miffed that it was longer lol. Pair of tui's, my fav bird, I can watch them for hours. Mate could you not stay in that hut for months on end, what a cracking one, that wood burning stove is far far better than any TV. Your own video, your own music and a zest for tramping and living, a recipe for happiness, good stuff Jesse. Cheers Chris.....P.S When you come to write that book about NZ huts you just came up with the title...Yarns around the Fire😍😍

Haha there were also debates in the hut book about the distance. It was an awesome hut with a very homely feel with that wooden interior. Thanks a lot Chris, I get a lot of fulfillment out of this stuff and always want to do more. Haha I love that idea! Cheers

Because of this video, I am off to Leitch's Hut next week, weather permitting. School holidays so could be busy, even though its a good size hut, I'm taking my tent just in case. I live in Hawkes Bay so a decent drive, should be tramping by at least midday. I always enjoy the plant ID that you give. Thanks for these videos, it encourages me to visit huts that I have been thinking about for a while. Now I'm doing!!! On the way home, I will call into Zekes Hut for the night. Two nice short-ish walks. Excellent work. Thank you.

Fantastic. I really appreciate you sharing how these videos have motivated you! Combining multiple overnighters is a great way to make the most of a trip - it's what I did my for Blyth and Zeke's trips. Jealous of the Kaweka and Ruahine at your back door, hoping to do a lot there this summer

Excellent video. Another good area to explore that I haven't returned to since my time-rich but $$ poor student days! Again, thanks for the flora information. That Northern Rata that had taken over the Mamaku looked massive. Interesting observation about the Lockwood appearance of Leitch's hut. You probably know this, but most of the Dept of Lands and Surveys huts built in the Kaimanawas and Tongariro (1970's - 80's?) were Lockwood (Rotorua). There was a firm in Christchurch that also made interlocking timber structures and these 2 companies competed to build the strongest huts.

Thanks Robin. I agree, that rata was absolutely incredible. I didn't know that, that's really interesting! Now I think of it, you're right about many of those huts having the same nice timber interiors. Thanks again

@@Upsidedownorangejuice I'd have liked to take one of the longer routes in but was short for time. A recent entry by a DOC ranger said the Waikawau track is nearly non existent due to overgrowth now, and Mahoenui is ok but a lot of overgrown blackberry to deal with

Glad you enjoyed it. Apparently DOC manages 950 but there would be even more as some are managed by other organisations but still open to the public. In short, there's a lot!

Thanks bro, not too well unfortunately haha. The guys I shared the hut with stayed 2 nights, and there was another group camped in one of the clearings on the way in, but I heard no shots. Probably still worth a wander in to check out all the river clearings, but I reckon you'll know better spots!
