There's a lot of talk about the Hesco L210 special threat armor. It's light, thin, and affordable. The Hesco L210 armor is rated for intermediate threats like 5.56 and 7.62x39 but what happens if you hit it with M855A1 out of a 20" barreled AR? How about 6.8SPC? What about 6mm ARC? We put the Hesco L210 armor through its paces in our test.

As someone who owns a set of L210s, it is nice to know how high quality these plates are for what they say they can stop. Hopefully I never have to be in a situation where I might get shot by anything though.

Thank you for following. We wanted to test them because we use them. I was concerned by the M855A1 out of a 20" barrel the most. The 6 ARC I thought would be hard to stop too. I was impressed with them, they do everything they claim and then some.

I'm having a very hard time understanding the difference in results between your video and this one, specifically concerning the M855 & M855A1 threats. Why did we see so many passthroughs in your test? Barrel length and velocities (although not measured in MAC's video) are probably very similar. Is it only because of the # of hits on the plate in your test? After watching your test I was extremely skeptical about the L210's effectiveness, but it seemed to hold up pretty well here. Any chance of getting a retest of your video with 14.5 and 16 in barrels w/ M855 & M855A1?

You would need very very high speed cameras to see it, but I think what you are seeing with the clay deformation is that the plate is warping dramtically from the shock, but it's a wave deformation. Look up some slowmo videos of a cymbol deforming aftering being struck with a drum stick. It's mind boggling how much very stiff items will temporarily deform from shock.

@@maxtheroofer8004 I operate under the rule you should have armor that can stop whatever you carry minimum. Rma makes good plates, but it's how much mobility vs protection. Now you can get level 4 plates that weigh less than hesco l210s bur you're going to pay for it. 1400 per plate isn't something a lot of people are willing to pay. Granted "how much is your life worth" can be an argument but at the same time plates that stop most common rifle rounds for about 400 total for a set that weigh half of level 4 plates that aren't the light weight ones. I own a set of Hesco 4401 plates that are nominally rated for M2AP 30-06. Looking at the specs, they are single curve, shooter cut, Corduroy wrapped, water repellant polyethylene coated plates, just like the L210. The major differences I see are that the L210 is lighter (~2 lbs) and thinner (~0.3 in), offering lesser protection. The L210 is also actually slightly more expensive (all depends on where you get it, but my source has the 4401 set for $40 less than the L210. Interesting trade offs between protection and mobility. It all depends on your use case. I probably would have preferred the 210s if they had been available when I bought the 4401s, but I can't say I feel the need to buy 210s right now either. I also have a set of ESAPI multi-curve plates, which probably influenced decision to get Level IV protection, but I'd definitely consider getting 210s the next time I'm buying, especially based on the results here.

7N6 mild steel core was the standard 5.45 ball rounds until it was replaced by 7N10 that had a hardened steel core. Since these plates stopped M855A1, which has a harder and exposed steel tip than the mild steel core of 7N6 5.45, slightly higher velocity, what would be the point of testing it? M855A1 is already a superior ballistic threat over 7N6.

Thanks for doing this vid! Very interesting. It appears to be ceramic with maybe Kevlar backing? Would explain the massive back deformation. It worries me massively the ammoint of back deformation these plates have for the rated ammo (granted this isn't "certification" clay). Sure you won't have a hole in you, but your internal organs would be shreded, that m855a1 hit, see that splash of clay, that's not good. So you don't die of a bullet hole, but die from internal bleeding/organ destruction. Also would have liked to see m193 out of a 20" on this armor as it travels faster then m855/a1.

The damage to the clay is of course the velocity passing through the plate because the plates getting somewhat damaged deformed if you had a piece of foam behind you like the kind from a bicycle helmet that would slow down the energy coming through the plate you can't see the energy but it does leave dents in the clay and those dents can cause internal bleeding so you don't necessarily need a hole in you in order for you to bleed to death remember that!

6.8 has better mags and has better terminal performance from short barrels. 6 ARC is more precision oriented and would have an energy advantage past probably 150-200 yards. Just depends on how far you want to shoot and if you want a DMR/precision type gun or a more general purpose carbine with reliable full capacity mags available.

They're essential the same diameter, even if not interchangeable, as the difference is a quarter the thickness of a human hair.

MAC; Is the clay dent caused by a shockwave? If the plate is not flexible, then it did not push in the clay directly. It has to be a very slight movement that transmitted shock to the clay. You should punch the clay directly so we can get an idea of how stiff it is.

Edit: also curious to see it in extra slow-mo I'm wondering if the deformation in the clay is the plate actually flexing in a circle relative to the size of the impact wave of the round.

I wanted to let them move around a bit. Some folks say we (KZreadrs) too rigidly attach plates to hard back stops and there are others who say we don't mount them tightly enough. These in my AC1 carrier fit fairly loosely. They can move around a bit given how thin they are. So they'll move around when hit a bit. That's also why I put clay behind it. Just trying something different based on feedback.
