    Would love to see something like a III+ get shot with a 30-06 AP but at a more realistic distance (something like 150-200yds) to see if it can stop it. A round like that is most likely to be on a hunting rifle. I doubt Bubba will be clearing a room with a rifle with a 26" barrel and a 15× scope shooting one of these rounds.

Eotech's are the only optic I'm aware of that emit absolutely no visible light towards the target.

  • @kenofken9458

    @kenofken9458

    2 жыл бұрын

    I've seen articles and videos which suggest that the 5.56 ball is actually better at punching through steel plates than the penetrator round. Apparently in some cases, the steel penetrator is stopped by the plate and then the rest of the round - copper and lead, flow around that and spread out, decreasing the force to area ratio and it doesn't get through. The ball on the other hand maintains its integrity and punches through.

    I like to see him shoot against a solid packer so the plate isn't giving so much. Like a big block of clay thats molded to fit the armor. More like body. When the plate can move and give , it doesn't give a true representation of how well the armor actually works or doesn't work.

  • @BuffRANGE

    This is very true. I'd even offer to build the box I use for Mike, but I'm not sure he's able to lift stuff like that as it would be approaching 100 lbs with clay. His dirt box is fine for a medium, but he really needs to strap the plates down because he's not getting maximum energy transfer aka worst case. Menards has straps for pretty cheap.

    @EBH I wish all hard plate reviews had a quality iiia soft panel behind the hard plate. I couldn't care less about back face deformation! What I want to know is the bullet stopping power of a soft panel behind a hard plate ... if the round makes it through the hard plate!

  • @kenofken9458

    @kenofken9458

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@nutsnfancy I wouldn't have much confidence in the IIIA stopping a round that cleanly punched through the plate. Some plates are sold to achieve a certain level "ICW" in conjunction with soft armor, but most people buying plates these days seem to use them alone in carriers. Personally I think it makes sense to use any plate along with soft armor to cover more area at least from handgun rounds or fragments. You don't realize how little anatomical real estate a 10x12 plate covers until you put one on.

    Looks like LAPG Lvl 3 still wins on price, and 30-06 black tip stopping, but heavier & single curve. Botach 3+ wins on weight, multi-curve, holding together better (lost less ceramic), and appears to have less backface deformation. With 20% Mr.G&G coupon, these are price competitive with LAPG at $111.00. Though, LAPG did an $85/plate free shipping deal which was an insane value.

    The ceramic is what stops the initial shock of the bullet and hopefully breaks the bullet to pieces. The plastic slows it down and the heat from the bullet makes it liquefied briefly, and captures it. The reason why you don't wear it backwards, cause nothing breaks up the bullet except the person who wore it backwards as it smashes in to his Thorasic cavity.....and dies.

    Another solid vid, but the NIJ battlesteel armor IS NOT the same. All of its thicker by half an inch or so vs non-NIJ, due to what appears to be a newtonian foam insert after base level 3/3+ plate and then a few additional layers of soft panels behind the foam -- the purpose of these layers is primarily to reduce backface deformation to w/in NIJ specs (non-NIJ thin panels simply can't meet that spec even if they stop penetration) but that add'l material may also increase ballistic protection. At one point one of the battlesteel NIJ options on botach showed a cutaway graphic showing the foam and add'l soft armor layers... Personally, I add level 3a soft armor and a trauma pad (some botach level 3a have had in the past integral foam in them even though not advertised) behind my non-NIJ 3+ battlesteel plates (usually run 11x14 soft and 10x12 hard for carriers that allow), which allows for easy removal if not needed, instead of transferring armor between various carriers... None of the level 3a+ soft armor I've ordered from Botach has had any foam in them however.

    If 5.56 get stopped from a 16" and above legth barrel so will .308 and 45-70. Backface deformation is quite another matter entirely with those bigger calibers but I would never be impressed if a plate stopped .308 or 45-70. It's 5.56 from longer barrels that will defeat your armor. 30-06 black tip won't go through lv4 but 5.56 black tip can.

    You need to blast some plates with fiocci 40gr varmint ammo.. It's moving 3700fps out of a 20" barrel.. cookin! I tested some against some spartan 550 side plates and it went thru them like butter inside 100yds. Needless to say I bought 1k rounds after testing it

    @@user-oy9zy4ds9m so it'll probably go 3700-3900 out of a 20". There's two main ways to defeat armor. 1.Composition. 2. Velocity. Since we don't have access to exotic tungsten core stuff on the civilian market our only option is velocity. I'd be willing to bet those superformance rounds mentioned would go through ceramic inside of 50 yds with numbers like that. A good rule of thumb is level 3 is reliably defeated around 3300fps, 3+ is somewhere near 3600 and lvl 4 is somewhere around 4000fps. A buddy of mine got a .243 AR 10 with a 22" barrel specifically built for busting plates lol and it's goddamn good at it's role. It was expensive but he has yet to come across armor that will hold up against it

    @@TOO_RAW nah you need bullet construction AND velocity to defeat level 4. I’ve seen level 4 stop 22-250 at 4400 FPS with almost no backface deformation. If that had been tungsten or perhaps even steel it surely would have gone through.

    @@TOO_RAW I’m most interested if at what velocity will hardened steel defeat level 4 and up to what range. We know M2AP loaded into 300 win mag (approx. 3250 FPS ) will defeat some level 4 but others it won’t. I say at 3600 FPS m2ap will defeat all level 4. But that’s one gnarly cartridge to push a 163 grain bullet that fast

    I’m quite annoyed. I was sent a less expensive set of plates than the ones I ordered, and was told they were the same plate. After proving that they weren’t the same plate they said they were going to issue a return label, which didn’t show up until I inquired again about it. Now I’m told that I will be issued store credit once they receive the wrong plates back. Then I can reorder the correct plates again and just pray that the right plates get shipped out I guess. My brother ordered the same plates as me a couple days later and received the less expensive plate also. My theory, which I hope is wrong, is that this is an intentional choice on Battle Steel’s part to profit more from customers who don’t realize it’s a cheaper plate. Then when someone does confront them about it, instead of just sending out the correct plates, they keep your money and issue store credit. Now my money is tied up and I risk the correct plates being out of stock by the time they get the wrong plates back. I’m also concerned that the wrong plates will show up again.

    I think that's because III is about the most you can reliably get out of UHMWPE, and if you try to build a shield out of steel or ceramic, you're going to end up with some 50-100+ pound monstrosity nobody could use unless they were as big as "The Mountain" in Game of Thrones.
