Here's exactly what to do if you encounter a coyote

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Coyotes don’t typically attack humans, but as they creep into urban areas in the US, your pets may be at risk. They may view large dogs as rivals, and small dogs and cats as prey. Here are tips to keep you and your pets safe.

Coyotes aren't "creeping into urban areas". Humans are increasingly encroaching on formerly wild areas, hence more encounters.

That is not true. They are overpopulated in many urban areas because they have no natural predators.

Well that's partially true. Humans are encroaching on areas where coyotes have lived historically. But because the suburbs provide a similar environment to their native habitat, they've increased their range significantly. Coyotes were limited to the central and Western portion of the United states. Partially due to different habitats types, and partially do larger more aggressive wolves dominating the eastern US forests. Coyotes prefer open areas.

I had a coyote walking in my yard. He was maybe 20 feet from me. I told him in a stern voice "get the fuck off my yard" and he did. Tail between the legs, head down, yelping like I beat the shit out of him.

We have a lineage of pretty big stray cats in our area. I'd say they're about 30% bigger than typical cats, and meaner than hell. I actually saw one get attacked by a coyote near the edge of a field, and that cat wrapped around that coyote's fuckin' head so fast you wouldn't even believe it. That cat rode that son of a bitch all the way into a wooded area before the cat jumped off and ran up a tree. That coyote was tumbling, yelping and yipping the whole damn way. One of the most comical cluster-fucks I've ever seen. He got his ass straight-up handled. If any other coyotes were watching that shitshow, he ain't never gonna live that down. Poor, dumb little bastard.

I was walking my dog one night and I turned around to find one stalking me. I stopped and decided "I was the hunter and he was the prey." I began growling at him in a low gutteral throat "pissed off" tone and slowly began moving at him. the moment I took a step at him her retreated. He definitely became fearful. I kept an eye on him and never changed my posture until he was clearly scared and making his way away from me. On another note, healthy coyotes can scale a 6' fence without much difficulty, especially at a corner and can climb a chain link fence even easier. I recommend a little higher than 6'. The issue to remember is that as long as they see you as food they have no fear. As soon as they have fear for their own life the context has changed. This is why you never run or even back down. Give them something to think about. Put "them" into survival mode.

At night , I have sucessfully scared single or groups of coyotes away with a very powerful flashlight . Mine is a $49.00 Zenon- Lithium rechargable from HomeDepot. I go out in my flip flops and shorts and they dissappear. Another idea is those Proximity Sensors that are for sale at Harbor Freight and other stores for $10 to $20 they monitor your area and notify you whenever a large animal or human comes around. I think that gives great advantage !

i have a cottage in the middle of the woods in michigan, ive had many encounters with them but what ive learned is that they dont hunt alone... if you see 1, theres at least another one behind. ive had an encounter where we were having a bonfire and my buddy saw his eyes glow, so we flashed a light at him and he was stalking while 3 others stayed back waiting for a signal by the stalking coyote, they typically dont run up on humans when they hear voices. If you encounter one all you have to do is stand your ground and never take your eyes off of it. And if it comes towards you, you yell at it. Trust me, coyotes are as scared of us just like were scared of them

When Logan moved in he was warned by a neighbour that local dogs had died from coyote's. That should've sparked him into hiring professionals to coyote proof his property. Instead he spent 50k on grills and for a watch. Kong escaped many times via his inadequate fencing and roamed the neighbourhood. Coyote rollers fit on the walls and prevent them from jumping in, which is what they did to steal kong. He should've had rollers both sides, both in and out. Experts say don't provide a water source or bushes, which Logan did. He built a pond and added a ton of shrubbery. He basically did everything wrong. I'm just amazed Kong survived a year there. He was only 2 years old and that's unforgivable. Now he still hasn't made changes, and has a new puppy. He doesn't deserve that new dog, he just wants cute looking dogs for clout and views, he doesn't care about the dogs. Nobody who's vlog is called 'replacing kong' and then changes kongs instagram to the new dogs name is right in the head. He's a retard.

I don't wonder about it. They're highly adaptable and are/were probably living closer to your home than you would dare to think and have been doing it for a very long time. They smell our food cooking, smell it in the trash cans and see small pets wandering around our yards. Not only that, but it's a lot safer for them to forage in town than out in the woods. They don't have to fight over food (or become food) with other larger predators because those predators generally speaking won't go into a city or town whereas a coyote can feel right at home there.

It's easy to tell who has and who hasn't had an actual adversarial interaction with a coyote. The change in attitude is quite apparent and obvious before and after, and after the interaction usually not discussed at any great length. Why? Tried that once. I described watching the life being shaken out of my wife's long haired chihuahua to a group of neighbors so as to alert them to the danger. The response by one was stunning: "You should not be allowed to have a dog." Shut me right up. So, "meep meep" all you want , but also carry a big stick, Teddy Roosevelt style, preferably a piece of rebar. You just might need it. And don't be that neighbor

I live on a ranch in the Sierra. I see coyotes several times a week. I can hear them right now. The dogs are trained to call the other dogs if they see coyotes. Our dogs are English Shepherds, they have been working together for many years. The coyotes take off in a hurry when they see the dogs, they take off even faster when they see me. It's a big planet, room to share. A little respect, they're just trying to make a living. Establish boundaries, coyotes are smart, they'll figure it out. And if you have an established band, one that knows what's going, you will few problems, just neighbors. It keeps wandering bands, that don't know rules, away from you. Oh, I establish boundaries with a .410 and non lethal rounds. Life is good, encourage it...

Jerry Phillips Thanks for letting me know this. My daughter just got her first puppy and it’s only 9 weeks. Not a big dog a Mini Golden Doodle we didn’t think about the coyotes and that other larger dogs would attack the smaller dogs. She just wanted a small puppy for emotional support and to take back to college with her. Now I’m so afraid for our pup. Took him outside to potty and Coyote jumped out of bushes starring at us a house over. Startled, we immediately threw the puppy in the house, I made a noise and yelled he just stared and slowly walked away. You mentioned that they here the puppy and possibly smell his urine. I’m trying to purchase the right fence but after reading so many reviews these things can scale almost anything to get what they want. If you have any advice please share. Thanks!

I live in a rural area. One night when I was jogging on a dark and unpopulated stretch of road near where I live, I heard something behind me. I looked back and saw a coyote running after me. He was probably 100 feet back. I'm sure he just saw me running and instinct set in and he gave chase. But you don't want to take the chance of getting bit while your back is turned. There is no telling what diseases these animals can have. I immediately took the offensive. I growled loudly, turned around and charged the coyote. The animal immediately turned around and ran away from me. I sprinted after him until he was completely out of site. I continued on my run but I kept checking behind me to see if the coyote had returned to stalk me again. I never saw him again. The best defense is a strong offense.

*Don't believe everything you read in the comments* . *The size of a coyote varies greatly and location matters* . In Ontario, coyotes and wolves often mix to become "coywolves". There's no clear line between where a coyote ends and a wolf begins. *I was out hiking just a few weeks ago and I saw a coyote that was the same size as a doberman or other large breed of dog excluding something like a great dane* . Don't think for one minute that a coyote is just a small harmless animal. They might be small down in the desert states of the southern United States where they're starving to death, but not up here. They get big, and I imagine they get even bigger in the colder winters too. Coyotes do attack and kill people sometimes, and become much more dangerous in packs. You would do well to have a hiking stick, spray, or other form of deterrent if you go hiking and encounter one (or several). These video clips really don't do it justice.

However, there are also many that coyotes do breed with and that half coyote and half dog is often larger than normal coyotes, and more aggressive...and for some reason, they are not as fearful of humans.

And on a more positive note: Coyotes play an important ecological role helping to maintain healthy ecosystems and species diversity. As the top carnivore in some ecosystems, coyotes provide a number of benefits including regulating the number of mesocarnivores (such as skunks, raccoons, and foxes) which in turn, helps to boost biodiversity. Still another factor: One study found that sage grouse benefit from the presence of coyotes, because coyotes reduce the number of nest predators; limit jackrabbit populations, which in turn limits the presence of eagles (which prey on sage grouse eggs and young); and reduce the number of competitors eating plants that sage grouse eat.

The true solution is to have a hunting pack of dogs on patrol every single night hunting coyotes. To protect the whole community territory and destroy coyote population. They will be armored, and trained to be friend of man and dogs/cats. Wolfhounds are great for this job. Throw in a Bloodhound for sniffing out coyote dens and tracks. Their population will dissipate in a matter of weeks, they will either relocate or be killed.

I rather like Coyotes and like to see them prosper...but I don't want them in my back yard. They're not coming into urban areas because we're encroaching. They're coming because they feel that there's a food source. I live out in the sticks, so they're here. I don't want to kill one simply for being there, but I do keep a pistol on me when out on my own property because it's bordered on two sides by forest. I've seen them lurking, but they generally pull a disappearing act when they know I've spotted them. When the Huskies are in the fenced yard, they seem to be curious, but they keep their distance. I've never found evidence of any of them actually being on the property, but I don't believe that they won't come in closer. If you're in an area where Coyotes are in numbers, I advise carrying a pistol. It's a lighter burden than regret.

I wish the idiots that made this stupid thing were one of those 140 then see how they feel about the stupid things. Do i want them exterminated? No not really, i like animals. Do i want so many that i have to worry about them dragging my 5 year old off? Well heck no. So shoot the stupid things and thin em out some. We dont need to spend 10 to 20,000 dollers to stay safe from the over populated coyotes. Animal rights people are rediculous. What apout childrens rights. Animals are more important huh. stupid stupid stupid.

I live in the desert in southern cal and have seen many coyotes heck I have taken care of a few that were injured, one was covered in cactus balls not good, it took me 2 hours to get them all out, but that coyote did get a cog cookie afterwards. Coyotes are a lot of fun to watch, the way the go after a rat or a squirrel they are an interesting creature to observe. I have never had to shoot at any of them they just come and go as they will. In the winter yeah I put a little something out for them and they know I will harm them. When I take a walk they follow and just wstch, if you show no fear then you are not likely going to get bothered, don't run and there will be no attack. It is when people co stupid things around wildlife that they get hurt, I have been within 5 feet of a mountain lion and nothing happened to me. These people that keep saying to kill a coyote on sight well just think how they treat their family or others.

People completely over react about coyote encounters. They are harmless. They won't attack people. I live in Dallas and we have coyotes every once in a while. It never ceases to amaze me how hysterical people get over coyotes. I have encountered many on my early morning runs and have never been bothered or threatened by them. I think their presence is actually pretty cool considering they have been here for thousands of years. We are the ones intruding in there natural habitat.

My personal experience has taught me that rural coyotes are afraid of humans where as urban and city coyotes have far less fear and sometimes no fear at all of humans. City coyotes will stalk humans even when they don't have a pet with them. BTW, coyotes in Columbus Ohio are the size of German Shepherds and gorgeous!

FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY = 6' fence. That isn't tall enough! Ask the folks in the SW that have 6' blocked wall fences. Coyotes easily leap on them and use them to hunt. And BAM, they're in YOUR yard with YOUR beloved "fluffy", who you thought was safe! Check out a product called "coyote rollers"

When I was four years old there is a coyote in our backyard I remember seeing this "dog with fangs" who was almost as tall as me on all 4s the coyote walked up and grabbed our 10 week old puppy shaking him back-and-forth by his neck! So I picked my hands up in a fist and started screaming "bad dog" thankfully the coyote dropped our puppy and ran off !! (it could've very well taken our puppy with it) our dog was literally dead, his heart had stopped and his eyes rolled back! :( we ended up taking it to our neighbor who is the wildlife rescue man our neighbor brought it back to life by giving it an injection of adrenaline. We Took our puppy to a vet Who said it would be a miracle if he lived ..he underwent surgery to reattach the muscles in his neck ,...our puppy lived meight years! That's my encounter with a ! I hate the I hate them

Coyotes are extremely smart, and very dangerous predators. I never go anywhere without a firearm because of them (I live both in a very rural area, and I grew up on a farm/ranch). They see your pets as food plain and simple. Humans are merely an obstacle to getting food. They have no qualms with snatching your dog, cat, child, etc. if they so choose.

People who don't worry about it should probably live in the city typing it's just like predators that are people they probably need to go into. I live on the end of the earth where there's nothing but wildlife and everybody respects each other and it works a lot better that way don't hear of anything like this crap I'm seeing on here and I'm not gonna look at it again. Pretty much repulsing and sad and people were too many baby should probably go live in a city or people with enough that they can teach them basics and keep an ion can probably live out here in the willingness with the rest of us
