Coyotes are incredibly smart and adaptable. I've heard that coyotes mate for life. In this case, does that mean they mate for life with a wolf or vice versa?

Wolves typically kill Coyotes every chance they get. I've seen this on a documentary before. The Wolves chased a Coyote until they caught up with it and then they promptly killed it! The mating that occurred was probably by a Beta Wolf and a pregnant female Coyote.

@@jmseipp there’s no such thing as a alpha female or alpha male PERIOD bruh thats what im telling you. That whole system for wolfs was debunked by the same person who created it, the leaders of wolf packs are just the mom and dad and the followers are the children of that mom and dad, its a family system not a alpha/ beta system.

The two young men are right. It's an Eastern Coyote. Eastern Coyotes have some genetic endowments from eastern wolves (The Adirondack Red wolf according to some experts), but they are primarily Coyotes. When I first heard of them in Maine, they were called Coydogs, then eventually Coyotes, or Eastern Coyotes.

+computer5251 : In my 40 years of walking my Dobermans in Milwaukee, never ever had issues with foxes or coyotes. I love seeing them (they are so beautiful) and my dogs and they just looked at each other. I always thought my dogs were safe because they weighed 85+ pounds. Well, that changed 10 days ago. Yote ran out onto a path in a park and attacked my 90 pound Doberman that was minding his own business. It's way past denning season. In my 40 years of walking my dogs, I've NEVER seen this kind of aggression. My dog got a couple deep bites on his neck, but he grabbed the yote by the neck a couple of times and was shaking it. I went nuts and went into the fray yelling, screaming, waving my arms. Too bad there were no big sticks around. Yote finally ran off. I have a CC permit. I'm going to CC from now on. My dog is a therapy dog and has never bothered anyone or anything. My opinion has drastically changed. There has been insane development in the area (Zoo Interchange) the past couple of years. The animals are getting squeezed. So I blame the greedy pig developers more than anything.

TA, you are not educated about the difference between Wolves and coyotes. Do some research!

I've lived with them here in Kansas for 6 years. They've never attacked my livestock. I've even walked through the pasture with a young one. We give each other space and it works.

I feel the same way . I’ve had cattle,sheep,horses even free range chickens on my farm in upstate New York and never had a coyote or coy wolf bother any of them . They are all over . You can hear their Erie screams and yelping in the dark of night . They are to busy killing and eating young deer that are abundant in the area. There has been a problem lately with them eating people’s cats and some small dogs . They actually just recently killed a pet cat of ours that was loved and will be missed . But I guess he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. But like I said they never bothered any livestock. And they are in the pastures all during the night without any protection. If they ever do kill any livestock then the war will begin.

I grew up in central Kansas and rarely saw a coyote though farmers around us were adamant about hunting them down for supposedly tackling and ruining a few head of livestock, mostly sheep. Turned out that it was dog packs doing the damage. Fast forward to last year, I photographed a coyote checking out the perimeter of my m.h. lot during the winter where I left out a bit of kibble for the raccoons. I don't mind them though I know they could take a domestic cat if they should come upon one the right way.

The eastern coyote evolved to prey on larger game, mainly deer, unlike most other coyotes. Most livestock is either too big or too small to be in eastern coyote size range.

I just read about a dog attacked by coyotes in the state of Kansas. I forget where. They said a number of dogs have been killed in that area and the coyote population is growing fast.

Other than the coyotes is it the same with wolves as you said yer not worried about livestock, here in Ireland the reintroduction of the grey wolf is stuck behind red tap because of fears by farmers, developers basically the whole animal agricultural industry. The reintroduction of the white tailed eagle was met with negativity from farmers who blamed the predators for attacking sheep when it was actually stray dogs. Farmers kept poisoning the birds in retaliation because they were blamed for the dogs killing livestock. Ireland's natural heritage has been severely damaged by farming, it sad really.

Here in northern New England, we have Coyotes and Wolves. And then... we have the "Coydog". A Coydog is exactly as its name implies. Coyotes that have mated with wild/feral dogs result in the creation of the Coydog. Coydogs look so much like domesticated dogs that people have been known to become seriously attacked/bitten when the person attempted to approach one. Each winter, New England states such as Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire experience several heavy snow storms a year that can average up 6 feet or more of snow per season. In the state of New Hampshire alone, there is currently more than 86% of completely undeveloped and, UNINHABITED woodlands. Some of the woods have never been seen nor, touched by man! You'd think this would provide plenty of food for the Coydog as well as the Coyote. However, the deep snows, combined with several weeks of artic below zero temperatures including, extreme wind-chills, makes hunting for food nearly impossible. These predators KNOW exactly where to find food that is readily and, easily accessible. And, they know: "Where there's people, there is food!" Therefore, they will purposely SEEK out and HUNT down ANY animal or pet that could make a quick, easy meal. They can, and most definitely will take down and kill a much larger dog, too if they're starving and, hunting in a pack. I, personally have watched a pack of 6 starving Coyotes chase a healthly adult moose through the heavy snow until it finally collapsed from exhaustion in a field just behind my home. It is rare they'll take such a large animal but, they will oftentimes chase down their favorite food. The large numbers of healthy deer taken by coyotes and coydogs per season, seriously affects the herd by depleting their overall population. So, if you still believe a Coyote, Coydog or, Coywolf won't kill Spot or, Fluffy if they were left outside.....think again!,

Then what about I'd one were to, say, toss food out for them to eat if one came up to their house? Show that they will be fed, and perhaps the animal will become less aggressive. After all, man has the ability to tame. And we can domesticate coyotes if we do it long enough. We're doing it with foxes now after all

I was attacked twice while walking my dogs in the woods. The first time was two coywolfs and the second time was three coywolfs. The coywolfs were about 50-60 pounds each. My dogs are large 100 pound Dobermans. Both attacks occurred in the spring. I think they were protecting pups. They were relentless, the first attack went on for about 20 minutes while they circled me while lunging at me. I stood my ground and fought them off with a large stick then slowly walking away.

Just curious, were your dogs off leash? Did they fight the coyotes? I worry because where I live, they are everywhere, although very stealth. But I've seen them crossing my path, both day and night. They ignored me and my dogs, but they were on leash. When I had them off leash playing, I heard one close, but couldn't see it. I thought cool to hear one howl so close, until I heard a large pack answering, so I got me and my dogs out of there. So glad you got away from the attacking coyotes.

“New” lol. These have been the dominant canines in New England since the wolves were driven out in the 1850s. Any packs of coyotes you see are part wolf, which is why they’re running in a pack instead of alone like coyotes normally do.

Yes here in NH a wolf coyote mix breed has be around for a long time. Back in the 1930's my Father told me of his Fox hounds running then and they were called Brush Wolves back then. Nothing new. It just takes the highly educated folks hiding is a class room a while to catch up, LOL!!!!!

sean rogan you’re right coyotes didn’t naturally run in packs.you also never saw them in suburban or even city locations.im thinking this may be loss of habit and natural food sources.also I’m thinking that here in South Carolina they’re breeding with feral dogs as they seem more filled out and with a better looking coat.

In NC. I've seen single coyotes compared to multiple ones (3 or more) in approximately a 5 to 1 ratio. However, when they begin their nightly song fest, they sound like they're in close proximity to each other.

Coywolves have been in the NorthEast for more than a hundred years. In Arkansas their are coywolves. People just refer to them as coyotes. They are either coyote-dog mix or have been mixed in the past with the last remaining red wolf population. I thought the same once. Until I seen my first real coyote... it was smaller than I’m used to. Than a fellow hunter explained the difference.

I was born & raised in Suffolk Co NY, then my family moved to Arizona when I was 11 where I saw my first coyote. Now the coyotes are moving back from where I came.

I live in the manistee state forest in Michigan and we have Coywolves, and they tend to be a little bit more aggressive than a coyote. They have their own sounds. They sound between a coyote and wolf. They are bigger than a coyote.

Coywolf and the eastern coyote are the same animal and only coyote species you have in Michigan is the eastern coyote. There are a lot of myths and false information attached to the coywolf nickname, like they’re more aggressive, they in fact are not anymore aggressive then any other coyote species. Yes they are slightly bigger then their western cousin, yes they can weight up to 50-55lbs, but the weight is rare, on average a healthy adult male eastern coyote weights 40lbs vs a adult male western coyote at 35lbs.

We have the same. Our coyotes are definitely different than our coywolves. In behavior too. The coywolves are much bolder and always travel in pairs or threes. The Coyotes pop up alone.

I’ve seen an animal that meets this description on my ranch in Corralitos Ca, a coastal area of California south of San Francisco. It was in my area for over a year. Interesting and alarming canine with a very attractive blonde coat. I’ve seen well over 100 coyotes. I suspected the animal was a wolf-coyote hybrid.

I saw one in Ontario Canada while taking a backroad home with my husband one day. It was in the middle of the road so I stopped the vehicle because I didn't want to scare it. It was a beautiful animal, the coywolf and it looked just like the animal you are showing now. Come to Canada and you will see them! Pass through to where? Because they have crossed the border into southern Ontario!

Coywolf and the eastern coyote are the same animal and only coyote species we have in Ontario (& eastern North America) There are a lot of myths and false information attached to the “coywolf” nickname.

I saw the biggest coyote I ever saw in my life running across the graveyard at the Los Angeles National Cemetery. I was the size of a German Shepard but furtive like a coyote.

Maybe someone could teach the coywolves to eat yellow taxis. There seems to be an overabundance of them there.

I saw one of these coywolf with my own eyes. It was 100 pound. I live in Bowmanville,Ontario,Canada. It scared my 100 pound Akita-Sheppard. It would not back down. I just walked away slow. Take care and thank you.

I seen 1 running down the train tracks by my house, Apparentlly they use the tracks to travel, interesting. It was pretty big almost thought it was a wolf.

I live in eastern Tennessee and had a red wolf as a pet for 13 + years. I just recently had to put her down 'cause she had Cushings Disease. She went outside to go to the bathroom, fell down and could not get back up. So I had to put her down. I sure miss her as she was a unique animal. Her tail touched the ground and she moved in a cat like movement and had razor sharp thin claws on both front and back feet. She was raised at about 6 months til her death around our other dogs. She always fought with other female dogs so we had to keep her with the male dogs. That alpha female instinct always made her tangle with other females. Keisha was her name and she hardly ever barked. She would whine at night wanting to come in the living room with me. I really miss her! The first time we took her to the vet, he commented on what species she really was (you could not own a wolf in Tennessee) so he recorded her as a Belgian Shepard.

I walked right into one on 180th and Boston Rd in the Bronx by the park. It was about 5am. I thought it was a German Shepherd digging in the trash!! It quickly ran off.

Coywolves are pretty much all we have left in NB, Canada. Wolves have become extirpated (with very VERY rare unconfirmed sightings only recently), and you MIGHT spot a coyote, but you'll more likely see coywolves

+DiAPERiDOL Protip: Canada is flipping huge. There are tons of wolves out west, sure, but probably not so much in New Brunswick. And coywolves are certainly real, genetic data show that very clearly, but I believe they can be differentiated anatomically as well (not that it matters, as long as you have the DNA)

Oh these CoyWolves are harmless...until they get hungry...

Luckily we get to hear our Cyotes Every Evening Bark & Howl at about the same time daily... They Are Soo Curious & Beautiful!!! I bet we have Coywolfs or Woyotes too now!

2013, I saw a small coywolf and 1-baby, 2 weeks later in Frederick, Maryland, behind my house. Near route180 and route 40.

I saw a coy wolf outside in my backyard in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. I got so excited. It was going towards the creek in my back yard, and behind creek there is a small(ish) meadow. I’m thinking about going up there and checking it out... (Yes I’m weird) Edit: without a gun...

We have coywolves in Ohio. These and coyotes run the back fields where I live . Since I live out I. The country you cannot let you dogs out before or at dawn and at sundown / dark, unless they are inclosed. These things are huuuge! In excess of 100-125 lbs and more!! One ran out in front of my pickup & I was only doing 50mph and I hit it - went to parents down the street to get the rifle to put it down , got back about 3-5 min later and it was gone !!! That sucker took a hard hit and got back up! Talk about shocked...

I was walking my dog one day in the forest trail near my house and I saw a Coywolf. It was huge, my dog is a 100 pound German Shepard/ golden and this thing was just as big as him if not bigger. I ran as fast as I could to get out of there lol.

Surely if it is a new species then it deserves a better name than"Coywolf"

We have these in our national parks here in Ontario Canada.

Their so interesting and when you see them out in parks they almost look like someone's Sheppard that's off the leash. I live on the edge of Lake Ontario in Canada and they run along the waterways during the day in the winter and are often close to other people walking their dogs and not bothered by us. I was walking someone's dog one day, and a big one ran past me and into a trail, no more then 10 meters away. I hollered to warn the guy in the trail that didn't see him coming and try to scare off the Coywolf. The coywolf just jumped into the brush and paied no attention to any of us. Our area was trying to capture A couple because they had mainge and where looking sickly. The one I saw was definitely looking sick. From a distance it almost looked like a sick fox only huge.

We have them here in the cities in Canada. They snatch a lot of pets.

We have coywolves here in Kansas. They are big animals. Usually leave you alone but a pair followed me and my elderly dog. I think they wanted her but held off attacking because of me. Their habitat is being massively encroached on here.

There are Coywolves and they are Exceptional Hybrids

when they are howling its usually to signal other coyode to get closer as the prey 's probably easy to get. keep and eye on the little friend. they actually tuck into the flesh of their preys alive and don't even kill first. those are monsters. i'll turn one into a bathroom rug any chance i get

I may be mistaken but I believe I have seen the Coywolf near Statesville NC. This animal was definitely larger than a normal coyote. Appeared to be more muscled in appearance.

More like cross breed as they are canine they can breed together if they actually care to do that and not kill each other a female in heat and a male of a similar species for example Fox and coyote wolf and coyote dog and coyote dog and fox wolf and dog it is just interspecies mating not really evolution we did more to evolve the dog species and they have each other and humankind has brought about many many different types of species of dogs through selective breeding for different purposes

I've seen one in Mountlake Terrace Washington in broad daylight., running pass me at high speed, and it jumped off of a 10 ft. rise to the street at about 25 or 30 mph !!! It was bigger than a coyote and looked like a small wolf !!!

The Eastern Coyote has always been a wolf hybrid. It's much, much larger than the tiny Western Coyote. But they released stupid Grey Wolves in WA state now.

Wolves are smarter and less aggressive. I raised Wolves.

We have them here in Hopewell Va.. They mainly stick to the train tracks..

There is a new Kodak Polar bear now too.

I think coywolves are great. Its a animal that is wild that thrives around humans.

Yes a wild animal that thrives around humans that is a cross between a coyote that has been on news for trying to drag somebody's child into the woods and a wolf which our ancestors feared for a reason because eventually when they get comfortable enough around people they will hunt them when they're running packs and they're hungry and hunting there likely isn't much of anything that eventually they wouldn't try to get and on top of that coyotes act all playfully to try to lure your dog into the woods will they likely had at least two to three more coyotes waiting and yes coyotes do sometimes hunt in packs not often but sometimes and that's when they're most dangerous usually one or two nothing to deal with I chase to off with a stick and a pipe when I was a teenager it'll be interesting when their populations get high enough for conservation to be viable which is responsible use of Natural Resources which includes our Bounty here on Earth Wild game

I agree! People commenting about how dangerous they are don't seem to realize that most of their favorite animals are dangerous. The person asking if you like rats, I'm guessing you do, as do I lol. And the person commenting about our ancestors and wolves, humans weren't terrified, they were respectfully intimidated. And dogs are afraid of them? I have a rescued coydog. Soooo....

We had a grown woman killed here by a pack of them. They often kill deer and lure dogs to the brush to kill them.

I think the most unnatural factor is that the predator of predators has become more passive than a sheep. Sheep don't do anything about coyotes infiltrating their area, either. Coyotes are amazing, but people?

You do know this is nothing new right? Coyotes and wolves have been mating for hundreds of years. And actually a lot of "pure" wolves have a lot, or some amount of coyote DNA. And vise versa. It's called admixture. And by biology's own definition, the wolf and coyote are already a part of the same species. Don't have to believe me if you want, i don't really care.

They're concerned about their own opinion based upon what they believe to be fact, purely because someone (e.g. a scientist) may say it's so, without doing their OWN research. This is sooooo interesting! Coyotes will not hurt humans. I live in Tucson, AZ, in a pretty populous part of town. I've seen them (they usually travel in pairs) walk right through my yard, 10 feet away from me and just go about their business. I just bring my cats inside and shut the door. I lost one cat to a coyote and it was sad. I cried like a baby. But, coyotes have to eat too. I'm not afraid of them, I don't hate them, they are just a part of nature.

Yes, they are. I have one that visits regularly. He stands close to the woods next to my house. I feel so privileged to see him at least 3 times a week.

@@davidjenson4512 I have seem regular coyote do a kill and the screaming, I live in a very rural wooded area. I also use an air horn to disrupt them on a weekly basis. I have also seen man destroy their habitat, so we are partially to blame. No kill is ever easy to see or listen to but it's survival of the strongest in life.

We have these over here in the Wallowas they killed a friends dog

I live in Virginia Beach Va. 2 years ago I went out of my suburban House at around 3 am with my dog. There was a Coywolf Laying in the Grass in the foggy mist about 25 yards away. It casually got up and walked into some woods across the street, after looking back at me. Called animal control who verified that they were in those woods along with a Black bear that was seen down the street. I Lived in VB 71 years and never encountered that before.

There are a lot of them here in Toronto area. Duffin Creek under the bridge ( Kingston Road & Duffin Creek) near border of Ajax & Pickering.

We've had coyotes in my state for years before they finally spotted one. They're extraordinarily stealthy and sneaky. I've never seen one myself. Coyotes are far more comfortable around people than wolves are. They don't fear humans in the same way, which is why they can live in suburban areas. And also why people should keep their distance. Coyotes aren't naturally vicious or violent and will flee from you if you try to approach, but a cornered animal can be a dangerous one. That goes for most carnivores as well as deer. It should also be noted DOGS ARE MORE DANGEROUS on average. The most animal attacks in the US are from dogs. In general you have nothing to fear from coyotes. Just practice common sense.

They can smell sheep from miles away... Apparently they moved to where there were more sheep. The Coywolf should fit in perfectly with another hybrid that exists in NYC... Sheeple.

Yes well there was actually a now extinct domesticated dog breed in America that is actually believed and most likely to be a coyote. Although some believe it may have been a coydog or a coyote like dog, people are now bringing thoughts to believe it was actually pure coyote entirely. This dog was called the Hare Indian Dog, which sounded and acted much like a coyote.

One early morning I was driving in the suburbs of my city Toronto and on a quiet street I was on a traffic light and saw a huge coyote that I thought it was a wolf, bigger than the other coyotes I had seen through out the years now I know what it was.

Alejo, you should have shot the thing. they are no longer interested in rodents they are after dogs.

In Calgary AB Canada there was a coyote that crossed with the light at a cross walk. This was Center St and 72 Ave north. I thought it was a dog til I noticed that it wasn't on leash or seemed to be with anyone. At this point it ran towards Nose Hill Park.

+Pinkie Pie animals are opportunistic eaters. they will get what they can when they can. with coyotes already being well known to eat cats and dogs I find it a great stretch to say a larger hybrid would not go after pets.

+guncotton 1 : I've been walking my Dobermans in the city for 40 years and have never had any problems with coyotes. The yotes and my dogs always almost seemed to play with each other. The yotes never got closer than 70 or so feet and they'd always lope off if my dogs got too close. This year, yotes have killed several small dogs in my neighborhood, even those within 10 feet of their owners in their yards. The area has gotten insanely developed the past couple of years and the animals have been getting squeezed. My 90 pound Doberman got attacked 10 days ago by a yote that darted out onto the pathway. My dog and I were just walking on a pathway, like we've been doing the past 7 years with him with no problems. I have NEVER seen such aggression before from coyotes. My opinion about them has certainly changed. I just got my CC permit. Never thought I'd ever need one, but if I have to protect my pet, so be it.

Yeah foxes in general will not bother people as they usually hunt prey smaller than them rabbits and other rodents just be careful foxes can contract rabies it's a rare disease but a dangerous one to all mammals rabies is carried in the saliva and spinal fluid as well as the brain where it destroys your nervous system and makes you usually aggressive it also Hibbetts your ability to separate swallowing and breathing so you usually choke on water this way you cannot dilute it

You see either wolves or coyotes in MN and they aren't rare up there.

I HAVE SEEN A WHOLE FAMILY OF COYWOLVES ON NC.STATE CAMPUS NEAR WOLF RIDGE WHICH IS STUDENT HOUSING AND THROUGH OUT THAT CAMPUS. I HAVE ALSO SEEN THEIR PUPS

I have had 2 different coywolf experiences w my dogs. Each time the coywolf postured over a boundary. being non reactive I just walked away. Coywolves are non aggressive. How can u not respect this surviving against the odds beautiful wild animal? Their DNA is part coyote, part wolf and part dog! Show some compassion and respect.

NOT WRONG! I personally experienced 2 separate coywolf encounters. I was less than 10 feet from the 1st one when I rode my bike through the woods. Both my dogs were off leash on the other side. Sure I was scared, but he/she was just posturing for me to keep riding my bike. I did. NO PROBLEM. The 2nd encounter involved my 3 dogs near a wooded area. My older border collie (11) was off leash and less than 5 feet away from the coywolf who came out from the woods. He/she did not attack my older border collie. She came right to me and my 2 other dogs unharmed. The coywolf again postured for us to leave. We did. NO PROBLEM. Maybe if they sense you are going to harm or kill them, they will attack. So would humans. You have to give them their space to be wild. My sense is coywolfs can and do exist with us, its humans who think they need to destroy everything they are afraid of.
