Mystery of the CoyWolf Part2

The Wolf has returned to the forests of the Northeastern United States in the form of genes, passed on between the Western Coyote and Eastern Wolf. These large carnivores have many names from (Coywolf and Brushwolf to the Eastern Coyote). The size of this amazing species is about as large as pure Eastern Wolf with reports of animals in the 60 pound range. Poorly understood and relentlessly hunted this species is a true survivor. Spending time with this incredible animal has taught me to admire and respect this beautiful mammal filling and ancient niche in our northeastern forests. I'm Mark Fraser and to follow me on more exciting wildlife adventures join me at www.naturewalkswithmark.org and remember to subscribe to my youtube channel / nwwmark to view early film releases! I live in upstate NY on a small live stock farm. I have TC Footage of eastern coyotes - they look about the size of a husky with a long bushy wolf like tail. Without question the ones I've seen are pushing 60 lbs with a thick neck, back and chest. They have thick fur which does not appear to cover skin and bones - like many experts would have you believe. And despite what I continue to read - they do not look "all leggy", and timid or weak. I think an encounter, in the woods, with what I've seen on my Trail Cams - would be unpleasant. We keep our animals locked up at night and do not go into the woods at night, twilight or at day break...

I'm in Northern California with 3 fields surrounding my home. Lots of people have chickens and goats, horses, etc. I am aware there's also a mountain lion that lives in the back of my property - I think I saw one of her cubs walk by me (because noticed a black tip on tail), also foxes, coyotes and now I believe coywolves. I listen to the sounds and can distinguish the difference. As long as they do not hurt my horses or dog, I'm okay. I leave everyone alone, even the deer. Not sure if I had chickens if they would try to get them. Noticed they were hunting this week at least four times a night which kept me up all night a few nights.

Eastern Coyotes are remarkable animals that are going to be (have been) very successful. Hell - they’ve been around for 1 million years. That didn’t happen by accident. I’ve read there’s been breeding of Eastern Wolves and Eastern Coyotes in Ontario... the male off spring can weigh up to 70 lbs. Just a marvelous animal!

Untrue, Mark Fraser! Coywolves attacked and killed a 22 yo woman in a state park, in broad day light with other people very near. Then, they stood guard over the dead woman's body indicating their plans to consume it, but were ultimately shot by law enforcement. These animals populate forests within New York metropolitan region where kids like us used to play. Their increase has made them more dangerous due to decreasing sustainability, aka they've run out of room. I just hope your mischaracterization doesn't cost anyone, especially any child or senior their lives.

Thanks to Mark and Jonathan. I am a dog trainer and my interest in canine behavior has driven me to study the behavior of coywolves in Rehoboth, MA for the past fourteen years. I have tracked two packs regularly with my Australian Shepherds, recorded vocalizations, and learned much about their habits. I can only speak for the ones I've studied, but I can say for certain that avoiding humans is among their highest priorities. Rehoboth is fairly rural and they are able to live the way they like here. I suspect that conflicts with people are more likely in more settled areas, but a Coywolf that is bold around people is certainly not the norm. We tend to judge wildlife by the worst behaved individuals. What would happen if humans were judged this way?

Coywolves are actually more common than most people think. The Eastern wolves are actually coywolves themselves, ~58% of their DNA is Grey wolf, the rest being coyote, therefore a cross between an Eastern wolf and coyote counts as backcrossing and adding more coyote into the genepool. The Buffalo wolf is also a coywolf, being of a higher Grey wolf content and the Red wolf is 75% coyote and only 25% Grey wolf. There are still those trying to pigeonhole the Eastern wolves into a distinct species.

REALLY. There is absolutely 0% grey wolf in any Eastern wolf . Ones a species and the others a sub species lol. Both have combined but to call an eastern a grey is lucadris considering they are a RED wolf genetic base mixed with a coyote lol.

Another reason you shouldn't feed Coyotes, Coywolves, or Wolves in the wild is that when you feed them, they lose their fear of humans and become more dangerous to people. While it is very unlikely that a coyote or coywolf will attack a person, the few cases where people have been bitten have often been linked to animals that had been repeatedly fed (or the person was walking a dog. Seriously, if there are coyotes or coywolves in your area, don't walk your dog at night. Almost half of all reported coyote bites are from people who were trying to break up a fight between their dog and a coyote.)

These CoyWolf are very special animals. They have a black spot on their tails which are just like the ones on a full wolf. Which is part of their scent gland. They are beautiful animals. They need to be protected just like the wolves. Wolves and CoyWolf have a purpose on this earth, just like the wolves in other parts of the United States.

you guys spent three hours trying to get the shot? If you would have just sat down, shut up, and put the food down, been completely still, you would probably have had it in 15 minutes. For all the time you say you have spent in the forest and your apparent skill and expertise, I was astonished at your level of ham-handedness in this video. You couldn't have gotten close to a shy shelter dog with these methods.

I live in Tampa Florida and saw a very big coyote 2 years ago. it was so big that at first sight I thought it was a dog. then I thought it was a wolf, what was pretty sure there were not any wolves in Florida. it had the coloring of a coyote but was very big. maybe a coyote dog or a coyote wolf but it was bigger than ones I've seen on tv. anyone know if they come this far south?

Christopher Russell Not exactly. They are very common north of the Ohio River and east of the Mississippi. The wolf DNA decreases farther south they go. Though the last remaining red wolf pack was discovered in Louisiana. So there is some wild card blood in the southeast.and more in Texas from Mexican wolf crossing.canis Latrans var is the only known consistent coyote wolf hybrid other than the red wolf that exists today.current range is eastern Canada south to wva and west to Ohio.

I live in Northern Colorado. Me and a buddy of mine were actually hunted one time, by 5-6 of those beasts. It was the craziest/most intense moment of my life. Broad daylight. I know they wanted my dog and puppy at the time. But I had put them both in the house. Then casually walked towards the lil dots we had seen that were moving towards us, after we put my dogs inside. I didn't think wed get close, shit close enough to even see them. We got farrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr too fuckin close lol. The alpha males head/chest was MASSIVE. Very interesting creature. but def not shy of humans like full wolves. but def were not coyotes..... they hunt in packs and were like at least twice the size of any coyote I've ever seen in my life. but wtf dude said he had one run up to him and was 3 feet from his face, close enough to see its pupils dilate. 1:40. 4:20 but he cant believe how beautiful they are "close up" at 50-100 ft? hmmmmm.. Maybe he confused 8:20 with the story he mentioned at 1:40........? 3 feet is fucking close as fuck. Look 3 feet in front of you right now. A wild one is going to run up a hill get that close to someone..? That one that's been fed by people EVERY day wouldn't get 3 ft near him as he was throwing food at it....Not saying hes lying cuz idk. But if that did in fact happen, and it very well could have, but you can bet your ass it wasn't by itself. Ahd he was surrounded by at least 2-4 more of them. Lucky as shit they weren't hungry. I've made eye contact with an alpha male, who had serious implications of finding out what I taste like. Maybe because the ones I made contact with are in Colorado, more of a plains habitat. and those ones are much further north. but the alpha I saw, I have a ~100lb pit. This thing was MUCH MUCH larger then her. Larger then those ones as well, in the enclosure. They weren't that color either. They were more black, but silver/grey wasn't the dominant color on any of them. It looked like a giant ass german shepard x2. That things chest was easily the width of my body and its head looked like a bear. Massive animal
