These Wolves are an endangered species in the Southeastern U.S.... their numbers are dwindling so this rare footage of 2 showing up at your home in search of food is a rare treat indeed. Such beautiful and misunderstood animals. I wouldn't approach one but I would love to see one up close like this. How blessed you were. But how thankful your cat or dogs weren't outside.

I don't have dogs, but do have 2 cats. They were outside somewhere, but were not bothered. I've owned cats for my entire life and have never lost one to another animal.😀😀

Very cool! I'd never heard of them before. Nice looking canines. Of the "wild dog" species in North America these guys almost look domesticated, kinda remind me of German Shepherds.

If you want to learn more about red wolves, there is a Center with cams in NY. It's called the Wolf Conservation Center. There are quite a few centers similar to the WCC. Another is the Iternational Wolf Center in Ely Minnesota, also with cams. A lot of good reading at both.

That looks a lot like an eastern coyote or a red coy wolf. It would be a one in a million coincidence if this was a pure red wolf in WESTERN NC

I rescue huskies and sometimes they are part wolf. I’ll tell you this wolves are so sweet ! They just want a treat and to lounge on the couch with you. This wolf of gorgeous! I hope someone leaves her a few treats. I have found their intelligence level to be off the charts. And they love their caretakers with all their heart. If you encounter one don’t be afraid. Just give them respect and a few treats. Let them know you are a friend. And they will appreciate you. God is so good for allowing us to live on earth with such amazing animals.

I live in Sylva, NC and we had a pair that lived near us. I saw one of them hunting something in the snow, it was hopping and pouncing but never saw it catch what it was after. Later in the spring, one of them was hit and killed just below our house and we've never seen any other ones since then. Was probably about 10 years ago. Beautiful animals

That is really awesome. It's one of those situations where I wouldn't want a large predator hanging out on my porch, but I would make an acception if it was something so rare.

I saw a dead red wolf on the shoulder of I95 in northeastern NC ten years ago.I It was apparently hit by a car. Sad.

I never leave dog food out; I don't have a dog. I feed my cats inside. I do feed the birds but the feeders are high on the red barn so the bears can't get them. What he is eating is an old fruitcake that was put out for the birds. I never would have dreamed a wolf or dog or cat would have eaten it. I don't put food in the trash; I have a compost. I was happy to see these animals. I get a lot of bears and other animals because I live right in the mountains.

If you are in western NC, that is not a Red Wolf. Red Wolves are nearly extinct in the wild, and only a small population of 20 to 25 live in the far northeast corner of NC. This information is readily available if you search for it. Additionally, having seen Red Wolves up close at the NC Zoo, the animals on your porch appear to be much too large.

have many videos of black bears. The experts say black bears are solitaire animals, they don't always get it right. I've had the same three coming together almost every night. I had always thought they were solitaire too.

I had never seen them here before I posted this video and I have seen them only twice since. But the bears, that's different, they're here every night. I live about 1/4 th mile from Montreat so you why, mountains all around.

No idea they had wolves In NC.that is one muscular looking creature 😮

Yes. The experts do not know everything. They say that bears are never in groups, but I have 3 grown bears coming together on my porch almost every night. I have the videos posted on here.

I actually recorded what sounded like a wolf howling near the Blue Ridge Parkway. I looked up red wolves,but they sound more like coyotes. This matched up best w a black wolf,which has never been seen around here. Otherwise,it's a cryptid,bc it sounded like it was 500 lbs... kzread.info/dash/bejne/goWFlqyHdtvgYsY.html

Red wolves were re-😅introduced to the Smokies in the 90s, but that group didn’t make, it, so I Googled your claim, and yup! There are red wolves in two eastern NC wildlife refuges.

Yes, he must have been. I had an old fruitcake that I put out for the birds to eat; he was eating that. I felt so bad for him, but he would have run away if I had tried to give him something.

These are your dogs? These are no wolf like dog i see here. Looks like someone's dogs got out of the pen.

These animals are everywhere in NC and Va. Often mixed with coyotes. They are dangerous. They OFTEN attack hunting dogs. Our ancestors made many mistakes but the attempt to wipe out the wolves was not one of them.

It looks domesticated wild ones are skinny like coyotes. Somebody had been taking care of him

My raccoon hunting dog treed a raccoon. A wolve leading a pack of coyotes got to him in six minutes. They tore him up bad. All while I was trying to scare them away. Only gunfire deterred them. I wish I could have got there in time. My friend shot one in my area, he missed the second one, it turned around and charged him. He didn’t miss the second time. Just suppose he was a child instead of a 70 year old man with a shotgun. They cannot cohabitate with us

That's someone's dog that got loose. Ill tell you why, that dog is way too comfortable on that porch. If it was wild, it would of eased up there, if it went and would of been very low to the steps. And noises most likely would of spooked him and made him have erratic movements. I've been in the woods and around wildlife my entire life, this is or atleast was someone's pet. Shits gotta be click bait.

This is a lovely animal, but it isn't a red wolf. It's a coyote or perhaps an admixture ("hybrid). The only known red wolves in the wild live on the Albemarle Peninsula in northeastern North Carolina. There is no way to confirm the genetic makeup of a wild canid except through DNA testing. Who was the source of this "confirmation?" Property owners everywhere should not encourage coyotes to visit deck and porches and other areas in proximity to houses , especially if these people have cats and small dogs - and even small children.

They were just passing through. They are not coyotes. I lived in AZ and know all about the coyote danger. I feed the birds and I never put food in the trash, it all goes out in the yard or on my porch. The one was eating an old fruitcake I had put out for the birds but wasn't eaten. He must have been hungry to eat that. Information was from someone who raises wolves. Where do you live and where did you get your degree?

@@charlottevelez1836 Hi, Charlotte, and thanks for your comments and question. I am with the Red Wolf Coalition in northeastern NC. Here's the timeline with some explanation. The first release of captive-bred red wolves was in September 1987 at Alligator River National Wildlife refuge on the Albemarle Peninsula in northeastern NC. Red wolf numbers increased steadily until 2012 when a combination of factors (gunshot mortality that fractured established red wolf packs and mismanagement by the U.S. fish and Wildlife Service administration in Atlanta) caused the population to plummet. Due mainly to a lawsuit filed on behalf of the Red Wolf Coalition and 2 other conservation organizations, management protocols were resumed three years ago, and once again, there is hope that the population will rebuild despite continuing challenges. Pups were born in the wild last spring (2023), and we are HOPING more will be born this month or early in May! The reintroduction project in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park in the 1990s was terminated in 1999 because of low pup survival (parvo may have been to blame) and because there wasn't ample prey (deer mainly) in the high elevations of the old-growth forest. So the wolves headed out to the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests where they weren't supposed to be. The USFWS captured as many as they could and took them back to northeastern NC. The project was canceled, and no more wolves were released in the GSMNP. But most likely, some wolves remained - AND maybe some of the pups did, in fact survive because we get reports all the time of big red wolf-like canids in that region. Probably some of them have some amount of red wolf genetics despite interbreeding over the years with resident coyotes. I am with the Red Wolf Coalition in northeastern NC, and I have worked nonstop on red wolf recovery since the 1990s. The Red Wolf Coalition works directly with the US Fish and Wildlife Service Red Wolf Recovery Program. See my other reply explaining the red wolf-like appearance of some of the big coyote/red wolf admixtures in western NC and down through the region of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Anyway, on a personal note: I live on a old farm in a rural area, too, and we have big eastern coyotes here. I have bird feeders, too, and I know the coyotes sometimes visit and help themselves to the scraps I put out for the groundhogs (yes, I like groundhogs, too! LOL!). So I am not guilt-free about feeding wild critters! Apologies for my sounding so preachy. You obviously know the drill - and I confess, I love seeing our resident coyotes, too. Visit Alligator River every fall. Love the bears and red wolves. It is a shame the wolves have become acclimated to humans so much that some of the roads were closed in November due to wolves showing no fear to humans. Just read The Secret World of Red Wolves by T Depend Beeland. Very, very interesting. I am so glad a professional commented on this video.

Looks more like a husky mix or someone’s escaped mid content wolfdog. The face is very doglike… Looks absolutely nothing like a red wolf.

Oh just cute , next time go and pet them , they are just looking for new friends .

Neither of these are Wolf or Coyote, just regular doggies. A Coyote, Red Wolf or Coywolf would be half of the bigger one about the same size as the little feller. Also, they aren't blonde or yellow they have a rusty look about them. Just to be clear, Red Wolves and Coywolf are considered to be the same species. No such thing as a purebred Red Wolf, they are all hybridized.

Looking for food. Keep your pets food indoors only. We hurt the native species when we feed or leave food outside, thinking we’re helping. We are not. They begin to seek humans who leave food & that behavior gets them killed.
