@@nont18411Shelby's motivation is one of the worst written things in this story. He kidnaps Shaun to test whether Ethan would be willing to sacrifice himself for his son... inspired by witnessing Ethan, without hesitatiom, jump in front of a car to protect his son. And it'd have been so easy to fix - just have Ethan not jump, or jump too late. Ethan being in a coma did nothing for the story except iirc the timeline gets fucked up because some kidnappings/kills fall into the timeframe Ethan was in a coma. David Cage is so bad at writing.

One thing you have missed are the plotholes. Ethan having dreams of kids drowning. The plotholes did have an answer, that being supernatural elements, scenes of that were made but were cut... Likely due to David realizing he already made a bad decision with including supernatural elements in Fahrenheit. When he cut all of the super natural nonsense in heavy rain, he forgot to fix the plotholes and remove the lines that refer to the super natural sh!t. Point of all of this is that David is growing. Slowly and in strange places, but growing.

20:08 originally in the script Ethan and Shelby would have had some sort of psychic link that is why Ethan wakes up in the rain with an origami. Funny thing they left the origami scene so nothing makes sense. I played this game as a kid so I do like it but I understand why people would hate it. The music is pretty good as well and I think I like Heavy Rain the best out of all of David Cage's games.

Call me crazy, but I feel this has potential as a movie. The themes are intriguing enough to attract some people who have never heard of the game before to think “this movie’s gonna be so good”. Of course, there would have to be some major changes: - Ethan’s blackouts are one of the biggest plotholes in the entire game. I’d either bring back the psychic link between Ethan and Scott-making it so Ethan suspects himself on account of him going crazy-or cut it out entirely. - A lot of Madison’s character needs to be reworked badly. The constant “girl-power” theme beating the audience over the head for a character introduced in a shower scene is damn-near comical. Just tone it down to her just being a strong female lead without constantly mentioning it. I’m not even gonna try and touch the Blue Lagoon scene in this comment, I know my limits. - Maybe this is a little controversial, but I honestly like how Scott was handled. He’s shown as a caring figure, but the reveal shows it’s out of a sort-of vengeance. If I had a choice, I’d also make the girl that tags along with him (forgot her name) die in the car. Sorry. - I enjoy Jayden as a character. His struggle with Triptocane is honestly a nice side struggle he has to deal with. Please keep in mind that I’m not a writer or critic, just someone who thinks Heavy Rain has potential.

Fun Fact: This game is implied to take place in Philadelphia. Not really that interesting as a fact I guess but it meant a lot to me since I live very close to the city myself. That part in the game with the chase through the market is actually a real place in Philly called The Reading Terminal, which has a ton of locally famous restaurants and stores. Great review as always, by the by. I really hate all of Cage's games except this one. It's not a good game, but it has its charm. I guess it's more of a guilty pleasure for me.

You know, there's one additional thing about the twist that really annoyed me. DC gave the playable characters thoughts to fill the "downtime" and playing as Scott there are a lot of thoughts that really shouldn't be there and make no sense considering he is the killer. So either DC and QD have absolutely no clue how people think, or Scott knows he's in a video game and tries to fool the player because who needs a fourth wall, am I right?. Probably both. Anyway I implore you to not try out Omikron, it will break you as it did the Super Best Friends (R.I.P)

  • @andrewjames7438
    @andrewjames74383 жыл бұрын

It’s hard to articulate why I dislike this game. It may just be one thing. I was pissed off about the Shelby twist. When Scott discovers the body, you think the killer snuck in there and did it. This act automatically removes Shelby off the list of suspects, of who could be the origami killer indefinitely. We were shown that he just turned the corner and the body was laying there. The whole point of the game was trying to figure out who the killer was and that’s what was supposed to be fun about it. I “immediately” felt cheated, when they showed something that didn’t play out the way we seen it. The best way I can put it is like, It’s an unfair advantage the developers have with the story. We’re gathering clues, so when they edit what we see, they’re essentially tampering with evidence we’ve collected. My second point, I want to post. I don’t like snobs, David Cage needs to drop his elitist attitude with his games and about what he considers art. I’ve been moved more emotionally by Call of Duty. The biggest thing I felt from this, was disappointment.

"It's hard to articulate" imo it isn't even that. The game sacrificed gameplay and everything for its characters and story, and the characters and story were pure shit. He made it basically an interactive movie to focus on plot and characters, and then completely bungled that. And I agree. David Cage is a witless provocateur. A talentless hack. A snobby "artiste". Like, even if you e.g. hate tlou 2's story and think Druckmann is a hack writer, the game still is beautiful to look at and damn fun to play. Heavy rain doesn't even have that.

If I'm being honest, it always looked to me like Ethan grabbing Jason and pulling him to the ground is the reason he's dead. Imagine the impact of that kid's head on the pavement. Watch the footage again, but pay close attention to Jason's head and the way it's moving as he's pulled down onto the ground. It really WAS Ethan's fault. If he'd done nothing, his kid would probably be okay. The driver was already braking. But he grabbed his kid and either bonked his head so hard he had a cranial hemorrhage or broke his neck.

@Big B here ya go: 1. If you make sure that Madison survives to the hospital scene near the end, she (but not you) is told the identity of the Origami Killer. Understandably, she is shocked and aghast at the name she hears being associated with such atrocities. Not understandably, she and said killer have never met in the game at this point, and in fact are completely unaware of each other’s existence. She’s reacting to nothing, which becomes even more face-palm-worthy when she scootsimmediately round to his house. 2. While investigating the Origami Killer, private eye Shelby interviews several parents of murdered kids and collects key evidence and messages sent to them by said mysterious child-offer. Question: Why the hell have these parents still got hold of this stuff? Why didn’t give they these clues to the police during the investigations? Did they want their kids to be killed? And if they did hand them in, why haven’t the police still got them in the (still open) case file? Did they give them back as souvenirs when the bodies were found? No wonder they can't catch the killer if they keep giving evidence away. 3. If Ethan iscaptured and taken in for questioning by the police,a potential set-piece opens up that's so ludicrousthat you'll scratch your head 'til your brain bleeds. For evidence of its stupidity, try the following in real life.Go into a police station of your choice. Find a really important, high-profile suspect in a holding cell. They’re bound to have one knocking around. Help him escape, but make sure you have a conversation with a third-party immediately beforehand, and make sure that the content of that conversation will tie you to the crime without question. Then see if you get away with it. If you do, get a job at said police station, make yourself unpopular to the point that the corrupt powers-that-be are desperate for an excuse to get rid of you, then try it again. If you’re still working in your office, completely uninterrupted, a few days later and the police have started a second huge manhunt without once even questioning how said suspect escaped in the first place, congratulations. You are Norman Jayden. 4. Speaking of manhunts, the whole case against Ethan which takes up much of the second half is a farce. The evidence that makes him the definite, absolute, couldn’t-be-anyone-else, number-one suspect in a high-profile murder case? Nothing more than some highly circumstantial hearsay and tittle-tattle about black-outs and bad dreams, from his ex and his psychiatrist (tittle-tattle that in that latter case has to be beaten out of the unwilling source). We know that the cops are looking for a scapegoat, but making public claims of guilt and holding a press conference to celebratethe capture of a notorious serial killer without ever bothering to build any kind of a case against him is the simplistic and lazy thinking of a nine-year old. Even bad movie cops wouldn’t do that 5. Ethan’s blackouts can be explained as a sympton of the trauma he suffered when hit by the car, but what’s with all the false-lead origami models he keeps waking up with? Was the killer following him 24/7 the whole time with a copy of his medical history, just waiting to pop one in his hand whenever he dropped? Including that time he passed out in his own house? Does he really have an undiagnosed case of ‘Making-paper-models-in-your-sleep-at-topically-suspicious-times’ syndrome? It’s as sensible an explanation as any. 6. Whether the FBI run random staff drug tests or not, an addiction as debilitating as Jayden’s would not have gone unnoticed as long as it has. Unless of course the FBI is ignoring his chemical binging because of the magical clairvoyant detective skills the drugs seem to give him. 7.The guns used in Heavy Rain must be props, used simply to look intimidating. Whenever a single, easy shot would resolve things neatly, fingers stay well away from triggers and prey implausibly escapes in exactly the way the plot requires. We know this one happens in bad movies as well, but the frequency and choreography of it in Heavy Rain is stupid almost to the point of parody. Most notable examples? The way Ethan can escape a motel besieged by SWAT teams (‘Shit, he’s a whole eight feet below us on that pavement. Our bullets don’t even work down there’), and the numerous ladders Shelby can chase Madison up during the climax. Person slowly climbing very tall structure = sitting duck. An ex-cop should know that. 8. Heavy Rain’s world seems disproportionately populated with ludicrously enthusiastic but woefully unthinking killers. Take junkyard killer Mad Jack for instance. He thinks nothing of murderising police and FBI alike in his place of business, in broad daylight and during work hours, and then tops it off by dumping the bodies in a barely covered acid bath right at the front of his workshop forecourt. And despite having this big conspicuous murderer’s soup by way of a welcome matt, he doesn’t raise a bit of suspicion. It seems the police don’t bother to investigate the last-known whereabouts of missing officers. Probably too busy giving key evidence away. 9.The butterfly trial makes no sense. The contrived set-up of Shelby’s second Saw-style test for Ethan would be impossible for any one man to put together. There is no logical way anyone could fill a complex tunnel system (comprising miles upon miles of chokey-tight crawl-space) with broken glass without painting themselves into a corner and getting cut to ribbons trying to get back out. And if Ethan is cramped in there, a man of Shelby’s size would probably destroy himself just trying to get in, let alone escaping. 10. Why does Ethan still suspect himself of being the killer after the lizard trial? Obviously the man’s carrying a lot of guilt after misplacing two sons in a row, but after being forced to brutally mutilate himself while someone watches and verifies the act via a video camera, surely it’s pretty obvious someone else is involved? 11. Heavy Rain’s cops-of-convenience really are fantastic when you have a nonsensical plot you want to maintain. When they’re needed, they’re all over a suspect whether it makes sense or not,but when application of the law would be inconvenient they’re nowhere to be seen. The former we know about. The latter? How about when Shelby invades the Kramers' mansion, killing at least a dozen bodyguards in someone's private residence and then facing no consequences afterward? Yeah, you can spare Kramer himself, but whether he lives or dies, there’s still a shit-ton of dead bodies lying around the (presumably security camera-filled) mansion of a respected businessman, stuffed with bullets fired from a never-reloaded handgun (that may or may not be registered to Shelby). The police and media reaction to this incredibly high-profile, noisy bloodbath? None. Ever. 12. How in the hell does Shelby fund all of this high-concept murdering? Not only does he own the aforementioned vast warehouse complex, but he apparently helped set Paco up in business as a nightclub owner following the sleazy fiend’s release from prison. But hell, trifling details like things costing money don’t matter when there’s a set-piece requiring a moody backdrop. 13. While it’s just about justifiable as an editing trick rather than a plot hole, the scene in the typewriter shop is a seriously cheesy cheat that aims to throw you off the scent in the laziest, tackiest way possible. Shame, because the same effect could have been achieved with a much subtler, cleverer scene. And why the hell does Shelby call the cops on himself before he’s cleared up the evidence of his presence at the murder scene? Not that it matters. If he does get pulled into the police station, the cops maintain their ineffectuality flawlessly, with an interview so in-depth and probing that the script might as well have read simply “KTHXBAI”

Finally, a quality and truthful review about Heavy Rain I was only let down by the quality of this game's writing, but what makes me angry is how well this game was received WHILE THE STORY IS SO FUCKING BAD. This game barely has any gameplay so the story definitely has to be good because if it sucks there's nothing else to redeem. I've watched or played other David Cage projects too and it seems like the guy is great at writing a very promising premise but always choked hard to make it coherent (or logical).

  • @youtube-kit9450

Yeah, games can have terrible or even stupid stories (or no story etc.) and still be great games if the gameplay is good, there are good characters, etc. But it's absolutely a death sentence for a *story-based game* that is supposed to be carried by the story and the branching paths, characters and story are supposed to make up for the shit gameplay. It's honestly baffling how David Cage's games all tend to be bad to horrible in the story department despite being story-focused, but somehow they get well-received. Heavy rain being an especially baffling case.

Between this and Until Dawn there's only a handful so you take what you can get. I really love this style and I really enjoy the games, but even then. Their really flawed. Fun, but flawed. Only one I haven't played from Quantic Dream yet is Beyond: Two Souls and those two games before heavy rain.

Love the video, Scott! And I usually am bored by long reviews. I also note that, aside from the cheesiness of the plot twist, its also notorious the cheesiness of the RED HERRING. All the implying that Ethan might be the Origami Killer, with increasingly weird signs of that being the case, and then David just shrugs it off and moves on to other things lol

That was originally going to be the twist and the reason why Ethan passes out in the park was because he was Possessed by the origami killer but then David Cage decided not to go with it because he didn’t want any supernatural elements but he was too lazy to change the script so he just left the lines in where Ethan knows

And as a result, I found it rather griping, but that was also because the videos were 15 minutes or less long, like tuning into a tv channel regularly to be caught up on an series. Which meant by the time the big twist with the detective happens, I will admit I was very engrossed with it. I will agree in retrospect it wasn't the best, but I still treat it as like a "so bad its good" film.

The best thing about Heavy Rain was the Taxidermist DLC. Totally creeped me out and had me on the edge of my seat. I liked Heavy Rain on my 1st and only playthrough back when it got released. It was overhyped and a let-down though and all the criticism it got over the past decade is justifiable. PS This review is very well made and great fun ! I completed heavy rain today. I tried the platinum for Beyond two souls and detroit become human (both of which i dropped because of the sheer amount of stuff you need to watch over and over again) and i enjoyed them enough to replay a couple of years after i finished them the first time. I've never dropped a game before unless it's too difficult or broken, but half way through heavy rain, i had to convince myself to keep playing since i had spent money on it. I didn't like the cliche characters, the story was boring, the controls... existed, the stupidity of the characters was infuriating, and the potholes were obvious to someone who didn't wonder why the aliens in signs decided to invade earth if water kills them. I get what cage was trying to do, but between the supposed interference in the games production, and the cutting out of entire storylines without anything to fill the gaps just makes a game i regret ever wanting to play

i always thought that the story should have been shelby still being the killer but also being Ethan's brother or friend or maybe even his dad, and just how you said, the police would blame Ethan for jason's death (probably being something like ethan actually turned Jason's head into the wheel making his death make sense) and he would get a few years in prison before getting released and moving back in with Shelby and shawn in a shitty little flat until suddenly one night shawn just disappears and Scott is convinced that the origami killer is the one responsible for his disappearance (because he's still the killer). With that, maybe Ethan would team up with his reporter friend or previous crush or wife, Madison, to find where Shawn could be because Ethan doesn't trust the police but at the same time understands why they imprisoned him, all while Shelby is in the shadows, covering his tracks and silently torturing Ethan, maybe a motive could even be that he was like the hated child and Ethan was the loved one (I don't know just writing down my stupid thoughts here). And the FBI agent, Norman Who Gives A Shit, would be a background character who is a friend of Shelby and is unknowingly helping his plan in some way. Ethan would go through all of the traps and stuff, do some other shit, whatever, and then get to Shawn where Shelby was waiting for him with a police sqwad to arrest him or something unless you got a good ending where Ethan finds out that Shelby is the killer and would expose him right there. I just realized how long I've been writing this bullocks, god I need some sleep oh and the *Are you alright?* would still be in there 100%

Quantic Dream/David "Crack" Cage games are guilty pleasures of mine. They are just good enough to grab your attention and bad enough to keep your attention just to see what batshit insane thing happens next. My wife and I stayed in the street area screaming "SHAWN" for about 10 minutes straight. We couldn't believe it was just there. If anything, Detroit and Beyond are probably the better ones, it almost seems like Cage is learning more and more after each game, but just a wee bit. Indigo Prophecy holds a special place in my heart though. Not because it's good, but just for all the unintentional comedy.

How he was able to kidnapp children and doing all these things? He needed to prepare all trials for Ethan. How he was able to do that? This is stupid and what is pathetic is the fact that Scott can find his mother even if we don't confront Charles Kramer in episode face to face. This game doesn't have logic but what I hate about this game most is Madison. She is another disgusting tomboy. I am sick of characters like her. I hate her design. I hate personality. I finally finished game just today, and the moment Scott was revealed as killer and all the build up of story was irrational or was not even finished, felt so anti climatic and impossible, I started to search KZread for videos of wtf was this ending, and I found this video confirming most of my feelings about this ending. In general I enjoyed this game, and the only really bad thing before ending was fat fetched death of son, but rest of things that kinda felt wrong was minor, until the Scott big reveal and rest of ending which felt like Cage just wasted whole game in last 10 minutes and ruined everything that was good about it. By analyzing the story the moment I saw this ending, it felt that ending was not supposed to be like that that it was rewritten and remade in a rush in last few months before release, and I don't understand why it happened and how. But I do understand this - Scott absolutely was not supposed be killer in every scene up to the point where he goes to rich guy home and shooting everyone, and seriously asking if his son is origami killer, this whole scene is impossible if Scott was killer all the time, and until this point he was not yet killer during production. Meanwhile the father who was looking for his son had a freaking memory losses and magically appearing origami in his hands. Story was building up to make us think if he really is a killer and yet doubt it, but it seemed likr originally he had split personality and during those flashouts he was his own evil dopelganger or was under psychic control by someone or something. Knowing Cage previous game Fahrenheit it seems possible and its possible that this plot twist was dropped last minute of production because someone told cage that it's too similar to Fahrenheit or maybe he realized it himself and wanted to change it in panic but had no time left and rushed whatever he can and change dopelganger or supposed dopelganger that possible was mind control- to Scott who had absolutely no possibility to be a killer. Judging be some virtual reality elements in FBI agent sequences and by Fahrenheit (and also Detroit) Cage was influenced by Matrix and idea of virtual reality and artificial intelligence a lot and there is a big chance that Heavy Rain was supposed to go that way too and seizures of FBI agent and father (forgot their names), was connected to that drug and vr and possibly some AI that mind controlled fathers to act as origami killers and then put them on trial for some reason you know like a mix of Hal 9000 and Jigsaw , probably plot behind it was bigger , there was big conspiracy, maybe government doing some mind control technology tests on people, choosing some father with broken mind and giving them some pills to make them eat some sort of mind controlling nanomachines or something, and FBI agent was under same influence for using vr tech. And rich guy was somehow connected to it, with his sob, I don't know maybe his son was a prototype for serial killer story that was tested on other. It seems like something like that was supposed to happen, and revealed, and it was covered up by possible supernatural plot that was a decoy. But then it all was cut and ending became grounded, and suddenly Scott was chosen to replace all of this and so all the building of story was trashed. Thinking of reasons why this happened, I don't know, maybe Sony didn't have Cage enough money and time to do supposed epic conspiracy ending, so he had to do cheap and quick cut and new final sequences that came out if nowhere, just to finish game with something. It absolutely feels like after leaving house of rich guy rest of story was swapped and quickly wrapped with nonsense that was not part of original plan. Cage can't be that stupid to simply do it all out of nowhere and ruin this game like that. I really wish this game to be remade with original story restored. This ending surely not was part of original plan.

i heard heavy rain was great like 10 years ago and i tend to enjoy unconventional storytelling. i remember enjoying edith finch, dear esther, etc. quite a bit and expected that sort of experience. the difference is that this story is so poorly written and trite. you get the feeling people who loved this game were pretty simple

honestly, if you just wanna play a game and have some fun this game does its job for a simply and enjoyable story, but your points are absolutely roght, i played this game as a kid aswell and loved it and i still do like it but when it comes in to depth its more shallow then a puddle. I still feel like you were a small bit too harsh on this game because its really about to scenes not the story like cutting off your finger or escaping the burning buildings, it can just be enjoyable to just casual people who dont really play telltale type games at all or really good storys, revisiting it it was still alot of fun because i just tried to enjoy it instead of take a look into it, after i finished i dont really think about it, like not at all. so it memorable, enjoyable and fun, but not *good*. great vid btw

i consider this game a guilty pleasure and a lot of my love for it comes from the silliness and the nostalgia of the game, and while a lot of your points were certainly valid, a decent amount of them were definitely pedantic, and i do think you panned the game too hard considering a lot of the things you did mention have their own justifications that are explicitly explained, or just common sense. either way i understand your perspective, I just think the video was much harsher on the game than the actual quality of the game was.

I had two big problems with Heavy Rain: 1. Even though I failed 3 of the 4 tests, I still got the address from the journalist girl 2. The reveal at the end that the detective was the murderer was so stupid, I got angry. No he wasn't. It's impossible unless nothing portrayed in the game actually happened. (One minor issue: I wanted to get the shower scene but because I am not american, I didn't know the shower was at the bedroom, so I walked outside to the living room and walked around too long and then the ninjas attacked me.)

The twist does make some kind of sense. 1. It's mentioned in the antique shop that Scott used to be a detective, but he quit and became a PI (Making the watch and gun only available by someone in the police connect to him) 2. The letters were written on a typewriter, which you can see he has one on his office desk (before you even find his hidden room) 3. For a guy trying to "help" the parents of the kids who died, he doesn't do alot. (Leaves an armed man unconscious in the shop, with his gun a couple feet away, leaves a woman who lost a whole lot of blood trying to off herself alone with a baby, and lastly tried to talk what's her name out of comparing names on the two lists he has that might lead them to the killer) Don't get me wrong. There are a whole load of reasons the story is bad. But the twist is one you can at lease see coming if you know what to look for. Except for when he kills the antiques guy, that was just a massive fumble by Cage

@@rb0675 hm, I think he does a poor job with that, but I'd have to play the game again to say for sure. Either way, the antique guy kill is just so bad and impossible that the whole twist is at least undermined. And it was unnecessary, there could be some killer and I would have way less problems with the game.
