mmh, sometimes. I see a problem with the way they construct the scenery. There is a point where everything looks like a haunted house ride, too put together. Like the supernatural beings are arranging everything everytime somebody wonders into the place. "oohk ghosts look alive get ready here comes the tourists". WHat I loved about the original silent hills art direction, and what kind of was present in the P.T. demo, was how organic the environment seemed. Organic in the sense that you really fetl like you just stumbled into this place that has been decaying for years and you are mainly going trough the rubble discovering or disturbing the horror slumber (in SH 1 case, you feel like stumbling into a scene of a crime or gruesome accident). Bloober constructs everything like a stage play, I never feel those places are real, no mather how good the models and textures are. Just look at SIlent Hill 3 first stage, that freaking shoping mall, is just like the malls I used to visit when I was a kid where I was constantly afraid of getting locked in after closing time.

Honestly the moment Lazarski begins a weird stream of conciousness ramble in the middle of a well-lit hallway to what had otherwise been a completely normal tenant who, when he's finished, otherwise gives no indication she was ever there at all, is the turning point where I went from "I hope these guys get their act together" to "yeah okay this is working for me." There's no indication that they can pull off "oh god oh jeez oh fuck" terror, but I think with every game they have improved instead their "something is very uncomfortably wrong here and it just keeps getting worse" vibe. Like, for all they have messed up, picture them rendering Silent Hill 2's "endlessly descending hallway where absolutely nothing happens but a steadily louder foghorn". I feel like that specific moment is exactly their wheelhouse, and if they can carry that energy to the whole game instead of chasing Scary in the way they have in the past, they might actually get this one.

There is a game that is kinda like Layers of Fear when it comes to unconventional story telling that is insanely good. The game is called Devotion, it can still be found on some online stores although I don't remember which ones. The game is often overlooked since it was taken out of Steam due to people discovering placeholder files that had Xi Jing Ping slander. China didn't like it and ended up having the game pulled from the store. It has great graphics and a messed up story. The gameplay itself is more of a walking simulator with some puzzle elements but you generally play these games for the story anyway. I highly recommend it.

Framing and presentation is everything. Even if you have an incredible story, you can still convey it horribly through misguided artistic decisions. The OG Silent Hill 2 is a masterful work of storytelling. It uses everything at its disposable to effectively convey its ideas and themes. Every facet of its storytelling is considered and purposeful. Bloober have demonstrated that they are quite bad at framing ideas (especially when dealing with trauma and abuse). Any change they make to SH2’s narrative framing has the potential to undermine its thematic goals. Bloober is particularly bad when it comes to utilizing subtext and exercising restraint. Their stories are devoid of nuance and subtlety, two things that SH2 is almost unmatched at.

Blooper Team’s idea of horror is like if they watched a compilation of jump scares and copied it. Twitchy lady chasing you, walls begin bleeding, blood message that says don’t look back, end up in a different location after walking through a door you entered a minute ago, etc. there’s no substance or logical reasoning behind the scares, it’s practically a check list. “People get scared of the dark, right? Okay, we’ll have lights randomly flicker off. Hallucinations can be scary, right? Let’s do a bunch of those even if it makes no logical sense within the hallucinations.”

(Vague Spoilers) The problem with the Medium’s handling of darker subject matter is that it presents the death of an abuser as a bad thing. Which in and of itself is a deep and complex topic that they did handle okayish. The problem comes from its depiction of the victim as the game goes “Her trauma is so bad that you have to either shoot her or yourself because she’s such a burden.” Blooper gives zero sympathy to trauma victims as they treat the protag of Blair Witch the same. Its the ideas of the In Water ending without anything that made that decision feel like a tragedy. Both in Blair Witch and The Medium the death of trauma victims is labelled as a good end.

It's easy for something that's meant to be funny to come off as creepy or unsettling. Also just as easy for something meant to be scary to come off as funny. I think that's why horror comedies or satirical horror like Shaun of the Dead or Scream can dip into both the scary and funny side easily.

One thing that Bloober team knows how to do is to capture settings and tone, and mimicking gameplay like we saw in The Medium. Other than that, it's the writing and gameplay pacing that they're really poor at doing. It's especially concerning that they're remaking Silent Hill game, a series that has trauma as a huge subject within the series. Looking at the endings of Bloober's games, they shift the blame on victims of traumatic experiences rather commentate how other people's actions effect others heavily. Here's hoping that a lot of elements of Silent Hill 2 will remain untouched so that Bloober doesn't find a way to villainize or sympathize to the wrong characters.

The original movie is my favorite horror movie and it has some really well thought out and creepy lore which they completely disregarded. It's obvious they just wanted to make a Silent Hill 2 clone. The witch is terrifying and mysterious with the ability to manipulate time and space. She can rearrange the woods so you can never escape, control minds to get people to murder other people, mimic voices, and change the time period of the woods. There's so much they could do with that but her presence is barely felt in her own game. And don't even get me started on that ball of leaves "monster"...

If you are not immersed, you cannot enjoy it. Some people are more immersible than others. Just seemed a bit symbolically tone deaf IMO to add the act of a victim unaliving ones self because of the weight of said trauma as an ending. It does happen im not trying to say games should not tackle this subject matter in shocking ways, but I think the ambiguity with the ending can lead to a very warped interpretation. And yes, he has. You cannot sit here and tell me the only influence he had on the game was Konami "slapping his name on the box" in an attempt to "push sales." Yeah, Konami and MercurySteam fucked it up too, but it wasn't just them. Kojima's vision came into play as well. His idea for games in general revolves around a more cinematic experience which Castlevania's predecessors did not. The reason I bring Kojima into the Silent Hill discussion is the fact that I don't think it's a fucking coincidence that both Lords of Shadow and PT, both which had Kojima involved one way or another, were reboots (or in PT's case, was meant to be a reboot before it was cancelled). Lastly, I didn't need to "Google search" anything. I've fucking watched this shit go down for 12 years. Three parties, Konami, Kojima, and MercurySteam, are the reason Castlevania is a dead franchise. And it's not a matter of "letting it go" when it comes to PT. It's the opposite. Exactly my thought and why I think they're not such a controversial pick. They've already made a great proof of concept with the Medium. They also have guidance from Junji Ito and Akira Yamaoka. So, art direction, sound design and exploration are all covered.... The only thing I'm worried about is combat. Literally everything they've made so far completely avoids combat.

At first when I saw the trailer I was put off by the look, but then this is an early peak, and on repeat viewings you start to see those little details. Sure it looks rough around the edges, but if Bloober has any talents, they know a thing or two about visual fidelity

  • @lunaredgrave
    @lunaredgrave Жыл бұрын

I think Bloober is very good at visuals but they should probably do something about the writers because their narratives suck. Since some of the original Silent Hill creators are in the team now, hopefully they can prevent them from doing something stupid. Bloober is especially bad at handling mental health topics and since Silent Hill has a lot of mental health elements... Oh dear god I hope Konami keeps checking them.

Bloober Team, in my opinion, would work best as part of a bigger Team. They are really good with visuals, effects and atmosphere but they have no real idea on gameplay in an shape or form and their stories are just kinda there. You can ususally figure out the "twist" early on and there is rarely anything that makes it stand out. But as a Visual department for a bigger team, they could do great stuff.

With what you said about the Blair Witch protaginist - I always appreciated James Sunderland as a troubled man with dark secrets and burdens who despite all that is kind and genuine to the others around him. Like he tries not to drag the darkest parts of his life into others' lives. A lot of poorly written brooding characters will just overshare and dump their tragic backstory onto oth3r characters, but he barely even does this to Maria, the character whose presence effects his well-being the most. He tends to soften up and try not to scare the other characters with his story, and he listens to Angela with genuine concern when she acts weird or concerning in front of him, specifically the way he tries to talk her down and confiscates her knife when he gets the impression she's going to harm herself. James is broken, but he's not a dick.

Konami should just properly port the original SH2 to PC. The remake won't capture what makes the original so scary, being the lack of sounds, the bad graphics making everything look cursed, the simplicity of Pyramid Head walking down a hallway with no scary intense music, etc. It's gonna be overproduced. James' new voice actor is a perfect example of trying too hard. Nothing is ever gonna recapture the feelings I felt playing it for the first time, anyway, so why am I even complaining? Let's also not forget that Konami treats its employees like slaves and made Silent Hill slot machines.

These guys remind me of the people making life is strange games. It's amateurish, written by man child that doesn't understand trauma, add gimmicks in their games to make them less boring despite having 0 gameplay. I might be harsh but damn, giving the SH corpse of a franchise to them is the final nail in the coffin. The funniest thing is, it will outsell all the games they did prior due the massive marketing nostalgia they created by not releasing anything SH related in years and knowing the full franchise sold less than 1 single resident evil spin off game in total, it'll be considered a success by Konami even if they get poor reviews...

The only thing I can give to layers of fear is its always one step ahead of you. But other than that, it's just a generic walking simulator. The first time when I played it I was kind of scared due to letting my imagination running amok(thinking there is more to the game),however my immersion and imagination was killed once I realized horror does not exist, and the only enemy in the game can't kill you, and most often than not, the only way to be... Choked, I guess? By that enemy is to go to her.

What really bothered me about Layers of Fear was it had such a great atmosphere, yet often relied on overly cheap and loud jump scares instead of using this effectively. Some of the environmental scares really got me, the paintings, doors, curtains, and other things made to sound ridiculously loud just made me annoyed. I personally actually love "walking simulator" type horror games, so long as they effectively use the environment and this one just didn't in my opinion, despite its potential. Don't plan to buy the other games since I just don't vibe with Bloober Team's treatment of mental health (that they usually blame the victims in very disgusting ways), I did get Observer off Humble Bundle, but those visuals look painful to look at and make me want to avoid it tbh. Really good analysis of all these games overall, glad to see someone cover the issues.

Silent Hill is one of the few games I’ve ever played that legitimately changed and affected my life. Playing the original games doesn’t even feel like playing a game, it’s more like an experience, an experience that leaves you thinking about it for weeks after finishing the game. That being said, I have extremely high expectations for these remakes, and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little pessimistic about Bloober team taking on the project. However, I’d still like to give the game a fair shot before I jump to any conclusions. It’s easy to get on a hate band wagon when the entire internet is going crazy over a particular subject, even if said subject isn’t fully understood yet. I find that to be especially true if it’s something that holds importance to us or nostalgia value. I’d rather go into a game without bias and come out feeling “meh” about it, than go into a game with a predetermined hatred and coming out feeling accordingly. It may all seem obvious when written down, but to me it just feels like these days you either “love” something or you “hate” it, you’re never allowed to just be neutral on anything, especially when it comes to game and movie critiques. All in all, I have my doubts about the new SH games and remakes, and I don’t want to get my hopes up, but who knows, they may yet surprise us and deliver a good series of games. I guess only time will tell.

I honestly adored Observer, and I loved the detective aspects. What I DIDN’T like were the visuals. How jarring and even nauseating they were. The ‘night vision’ mode barely worked as such, and the electrical vision was extremely ugly at times. Furthermore, while the detective gameplay was extremely neat, there wasn’t a lot of it. (The base game only had TWO side cases alongside the main one, with System Redux adding in 3 more.) Those parts of the game were unquestionably the best, yet I wish there was more of it. However, the monster sections, with the exception of the ending one, were boring and just unnecessary. Honestly, if Bloober ever makes a sequel, they should ditch the monster, add more detective cases and side quests, and also be more subtle with its imagery.
