That scene at the bar always struck me as so bizarre and tone deaf, even when I was a kid and liked the game. It's just so...why? It reminds of the fanfiction trope of having random groups of guys trying to you-know-what the female MC because the writer doesn't understand how to create conflict. I guess DC is basically a fanfic-quality writer that gets paid, so it lines up.

@@layan7385 The random, roaming rapists is an overused, annoying cliché i would be happy to never see again. Rape is a storytelling crutch. How does our female character get developed? Hmmm...rape? How do we create sudden danger? Rape! There's nothing deep or interesting about the scene whatsoever. It literally exists because the writer couldn't be bothered to come up with an interesting conflict and said "People don't want their character to get raped!" So a big group of unintroduced child rapists spawn 20 feet away and decide "You know what I could go for right now. Some child rape." And everyone nodded.

I like how Cage says that whenever a play testers fails it’s the developer fault which is completely idiotic. It can be the developers fault if say that the play testers fail because it’s impossible to succeed or if the play testers dies to a glitch and maybe some other thing that I’m forgetting but the rest of the time when a play tester fails it’s because the play testers fault

I can only imagine how awful this particular part of his carrier is to look back on, having to work with a creep like David Cage, so it's just. Nice to hear that simple, easily expressed respect for his autonomy and humanity in a review about this awful, awful game. I have always thought that of Quantic Dream’s big three (the games most well known and popular), Beyond was easily the weakest. Heavy Rain is bad in a lot of ways, but there is a level of...”shlock” to it that I really enjoy and find entertaining enough (the voice acting, plot holes, etc). But Beyond...it just tried too hard for me. From simple things like the cinematic black bars to the famous actors, I always thought they were trying too hard to make a movie. I didn’t dig most of the side characters due to their lack of screentime in the story, the choices didn’t matter for the most part and there’s that weird apocalypse cliffhanger thing that feels very out of place knowing that Quantic Dream basically never makes sequels. The timeline in-game just feels like a mess and the game just feels like a ton of random disconnected events put together. The more I look back at this game, the more I grow disdain for it 💀 I do feel like Detroit Become Human however was a sign of improvement from Quantic and Mr. Cage, despite some issues (*cough* the reveal on the truth of a certain little girl *cough*) I liked the world they put the player in there and the satisfaction in endings and multitude of paths to take in the story that don’t just result from “hey you missed a quick time event, now this bad thing will happen” but rather from actual choices. Looking forward to your deep dive on that game, and I enjoyed this video!

Probably the worst David Cage game. It fails at both the gameplay and story department. When it comes to gameplay...what fucking gameplay exactly? The whole game is taken on a linear path without any consequences of your actions. The game has no fail state nor game over. None of the choices matter. The gameplay can be pretty much prescribed as Simon Says the interactive movie. The story is downright baffling with the amount of stupidity. It's one of the most convoluted, jarring, pace breaking stories ever written for a game that is supposed to be considered as a serious work of art. How the fuck did Cage convince the A-list actors to be a part of this shit piece and how did they manage to pull it off with their performances with a straight face? Did they even read the script before taking the part?

Now he's a cop I guess. 10:00 in order is so much better than random events because if she's angry in a chapter, the player doesn't feel her anger let alone side with her anger. What an absolutely fantastic review. Your analysis on Hideo Kojima hit the nail right on the head for me. David Cage is a garbage story teller but a good ideas man. That would be fine if he didn't consistently try to push the envelope on actual topics without improving his overall writing and keeping the things that made his previous games entertaining. By the way, if you want a game that has an awesome story and cast of characters and does the whole ghost possessing thing, then I'd totally recommend Ghost Trick Phantom Detective. It's produced by the same guy who made the Ace Attorney games and is made with an eight of the budget, but comes out being more charming and thought provoking than any of these game's ever could.

DCs writing feels like he's never talked to a human being in his life. This is the biggest flaw of a lot of studios, writers who have NO life experience and no social skills. While I do disagree with a lot of your analysis, I think the game had some VERY enjoyable moments, but a good 60-70% of it is trash. I'm not one to get offended on the behalf of others, but seeing how poorly this game portrays people is so utterly cringe it confuses me how this game got ANY praise. I really had to force myself to finish this game and in the end I deeply regret ever starting it. Especially after having just finished the Last of Us and massively enjoying the story in that. I was too desperate for another good story. Hopefully Control will be better. Oh, and it's funny you bring up Hideo Kojima. When I was getting to the end of this game I had a weird thought, I was thinking that Death Stranding and this have TOO much in common and wonder if HK got ideas from BTS. It's almost like it's some kind of sequel, like if the game had a bad ending where the apocalypse actually happened. It is too much of a coincidence that the monsters in this and DS are both sea-like creatures? Also, BTS... BTs? Another coincidence? The umbilical cords...

I just noticed something. Even though I never played the game, there was something in the Navajo chapter that got me wondering. After Jodie went to the room, as she was changing her clothes, she was wearing underwear underneath it. But, after Jodie went to the other side of the barn, before taking a shower there, she took her clothes off, showing that she was not wearing underwear underneath one of the clothes that Cory wear. Which explains why there were no undies on the clothes laying there on the floor. Continuity error, perhaps? My guess is, that there were a deleted scene that was cut out from the game, where after Jodie is in Cory's room, she start taking off her clothes to change, showing that she is not wearing underwear. After she changed in one of Cory's clothes, a Navajo spirit was standing behind her, but Jodie turned around and see that it's not there. I'm just brainstorming here, nothing else.

I played it again a few years after and still got some enjoyment out of it because of nostalgia. I admittedly missed a lot of the problems that you have with it. However, a lot of this can easily be explained by the fact I was 14 and had no idea who David Cage was and so the problematic elements did not come across that way entirely. Death of the author was able to fully work because I didn't have the preconceived notion of what the creator of the narrative was actually like. Kind of like how people were able to enjoy Harry Potter without noticing the problematic elements, but as Rowling revealed more and more of her opinions on things, the problematic elements seemed obvious. I think being too young to know what white saviour stories were or have an awareness of just how taboo SA and Suicide are in all narratives. In the last few years now I'm an adult, I see the problems with the game and also understand just how awful David Cage is. I still like the potential that a character like Jodie could have and a story like this, following a child touched by the supernatural having to live without agency to keep herself and others safe, and I despise the fact that Cage's utter incompetence ruined it. I watched your Heavy Rain video before this and your alternate idea for that game's plot of Ethan going to prison and then hiring the other two main characters for help sounded excellent and your suggestions for how things could be different here also sounded great. I think it shows that Cage has some interesting ideas, ideas that with refinement could create something compelling and emotional, but the man himself lacks the talent necessary to able to utilise that potential. I think Beyond Two Souls is a 'game' of interesting, and at times emotional (for me because I'm a useless softie), moments and vignettes, but as a cohesive narrative, nothing really works.

Yeah I touched on this lightly in the video, it play's heavyly into a teenage mindset with its theming. But like most things that do, if you don't have any Nostalgia or you grow out of it. The cracks start to show.

Personally, the topic of suicide has accompanied me for quite some time and while the executions in these games can definitely be clunky, the homeless chapter is my personal favorite. I don’t think her optional suicide attempts are there to glorify death or dying, neither is the option to choose to go into the beyond in the end. I’m glad they put them in there, even if they might make some people uncomfortable because they can serve as amplifiers when it comes to showing her mental state. The downside here is that these things should come from the story itself and not from a missable QTE. Depending on how you as player feel, choosing the beyond in the end might just be the most fitting ending for Jodie. After all, having to choose the alternative might just be considered “glorifying life”, which isn’t self-evidently the better option.

David Cage's storytelling style calls to mind a bit Jack Nicholson said in "As Good As It Gets": His character is asked how he writes women so well, and the response he gives fits Cage to a tee. "I think of a man, then I remove logic and accountability." Substitute the word 'man' for 'good writer' and that's our DC!

The most believable part of this game is when Nathan sent Jody to a teen birthday party with an Edgar Allen Poe anthology as a present. Is it any wonder they all turned on her and tried to locked her in the cupboard under the stairs? 🤦😂 Yeah this game was nothing short of prolonged punishment, and personally a betrayal of trust that Cage had earned from the likes of me in Fahrenheit and Heavy Rain, which both indicated that QD were on the right track.
