HBW217 - First thoughts on the Grainfather G40

I received a delivery of a brand new G40 this week so thought I'd let you see it if you haven't already watched any of the umpteen videos out there already. This video is a sort of unboxing, comparison and reasons for wanting to upgrade from my current system to this.
I paid for this myself so there is no conflict of interest or any obligation to anyone. If its good, I'll tell you and if it's rubbish, I'll definitely tell you. With bells on.

    Hi there, the half inch drain tap is available on the Grainfather website and fits at the bottom of the sight glass by undoing the bolt, the extra bit of kit is for the tap.🍻😊

    Hi Scott. Seems strange they didn't just include it with the system right at the start. Like buying a car but not putting on the windscreen wipers. I got sorted with a T-valve and have to say it works brilliantly. Loving the G40 ❤️

    Welcome to the G40 club!! I think you're going to love it. Agree about the tap, for the price of the unit, they really should include a tap! Cheers

    Ahoy Stass! So far so good with the GF one brew in. Tap would have been good but I guess they are confident the filters will work as designed. Really like that bottom filter with the extra security around the pump hole and thermometer. Also, the link with the app is excellent and is definitely more than just a gimmick.

    Very nice mate, gotta love when a new brewtoy lands lol. welcome to GF. Im into my fifth trouble free year on my G30, and Ive been so close to pulling the trigger on the G40 lately and upgrading to it lol. The GF app is extremely easy to use to build recipes etc, and manage your brewday, ive always found it very accurate. You wont know yourself with the chiller, the instant transfer was a game changer for me. Great bit of kit. Look forward to seeing your first brewday and the results. Happy brewing mate, cheers.

    First brew wasn't so bad, everything went reasonably well considering it's a new system and a clot like me. No major problems though and the rest should be easy to iron out after a few more brews. Had some little issues with exporting recipe from Brewfather to GF app but yes it does seem easy to use. Most likely the equipment just needs tweaked for volumes etc.

    Before the first brew check the app and decide if you’re doing a sparge or no spare. I would recommend the sparge first as that’s what you normally do but no sparge is an option. I use mine into the socket 13A with the cooker mains switch and just be mindful of the heat - I melted a socket on my last brew using a different outlet. The G40 is a joy to use and you’ll notice the brew day might go a bit more quickly too with the added power and ease of cleaning. Best of luck with ‘the first brew’ and I look forward to more vidya’s!

    First brew is done and dusted and will be up next week. Half an hour long though but is a full day other than the cleaning at the end when the two cameras ran out of batteries. Using the metal socket on the garage side for it, that'll be the dedicated one. sparge water heats up on the other side.

    That looks amazing I’d love one to do double batches. I hate the sticky up pipe in mine and have the same issue with the markings on the inside and my thermometer is about as useful as peas without salad cream 🤪 looking forward to the first brew on it cheers 👍🍻

    Looks like a great system...lots of nice features. I like your idea of brewing a smaller batch first to see how it goes before going hog-wild, lol! Looking forward to seeing what fine brews you make with it. Also, thank you for subbing! Hoping to finally get some editing done soon and post something new. Cheers!

    Think of it this way, I'll be saving money on the electric by not brewing every week at a time when the price of electric might double in price between brewdays. Those fridges in the shed though 🙈

    Great update but I spotted an error in the first five mins (just), whisk Zilla won't be used at that height as that's the sparge height surely 🤔 ? The mash height will be surely be when the inner basket is in the pot, about a foot lower 🤔 ? There is always a second option if the pump gets blocked 🤓, you could use a jug and transfer it three litres at a time 😉 🤣 . Press the button from work and get home to beer chilled and carbonated 🤔, optimistic at best I'd say 🤣 . The power lead looks great, that's what is often skimped on 😡 so the onus is on you when you use an inadequate extension lead, I assume it's going to be drawing nearly 13A (12.6A if what power you quoted was correct 😎)? DTS1953 whirlpools the mash I think, just means that the wort isn't going into the same spot. forty six litres would be a double batch for me as I use poly pins that take at least 23l each. I like the slight conical bottom, no wort wastage 👍. I'm very much looking forward to a sweary brew day video 🤣, more seriously hope everything goes well for our poor entertainment 😉 🤣 . Stay safe and well, ICAN, cheers, Schnuz.

    Yes I noticed the whiskzilla thing when editing the video but hoped no-one would notice 😉. No it was just to show the size of each. The brewday video is next week and there wasn't much space for the whisk at all, at least not for a 20 litre batch. I fitted a metal 13A scket in the garage side specifically for brewing so I don't have to use extensions leads any more.

    I have been thinking about upgrading since I saw the G70 for the first time but that system was too big and I didn't like the overflow pipe. Then when this came out, enough for 2 kegs and without the pipe, I was on the hook. I only saw the BZ Gen 4 recently but by that stage I was too far in. Probably be another few months before its on sale over here.

    cheers for the review bud! 29kg empty, they storing lead in the base or something?? love a bit of shiny though and it will likely be robust enough to last year's. my 50l hopcat is still going strong and that was around £400 including a hop spider....

  • @BigBananaBrewing

    It's light enough to move about when not in use and cleaning but no way would I try to move it with 40 litres in the pot. Yeah should last year's, would need to at that price. I'm going to try and not use hop bags, spiders or anything else and hope to god that pump doesn't block

  • @SafferBrew

    @SafferBrew

    @@BigBananaBrewing yeah so on the hop bag/spider side of things, I have stopped using the pump for recirculating, I use an immersion chiller and then just transfer from the tap into fermenter after everything has settled. It's faster and it leaves all the crud below the tap line as well as preserving the pump (most pumps aren't even rated to operate at boiling temps)... Looking forward to a brew day video!!!

  • @BigBananaBrewing

    @BigBananaBrewing

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Tom, y'know I always thought that wortometer was a bit pointless before but I can see how it would be handy now I've actually used the counterflow. I was still looking at the temp on the control panel as it was going over before it dawned on me. Have a Tilt hydrometer which gives temp on the wort so technically does the same job.

  • @tomwilliams364

    @tomwilliams364

    @@BigBananaBrewing I suppose the difference is the wortometer gives you the temp from the Grainfather as it transfers into the fermentor so you can adjust the water flow. Mind that back lifting that grain basket !!
