Hi from Ireland. Many thanks, great video with lots of useful information. I'd like to add my tuppence worth. At or close to sea level, water boils at 100 degrees C, sugar solutions on the other hand, boil at something more like 103 degrees. If you are able to set your boil target temperature at 103 or even 105, you should achieve a good rolling boil and be able to add your hops once the boil temperature is reached. You mention the Brewmeister didn't reach a rolling boil at 100 degrees, this is the reason why....it isn't supposed to. Keep your otherwise excellent videos coming

The town I am in lowest is 1m and highest in 14m, I think I'm at about 3m.. but I hear what you're saying, and today I set it just 1c higher to see what would it happen, at first for some reason totally confused the PID and even though it said it was ramping to boil, it dropped the power % once it got close, which it shouldnt do on ramp to boil, Im not sure why, but it took over an hour, and then yes I manually took over and pumped it right up, after that it went ok. but there was something wrong there.. I think PIDs need adjusting which is pretty easy, usually you would set them to a learning cycle and they teach themselves what power to use where, I dont think these are set like that, but time will tell, my guess an out of the box plug and play it probably isnt, and they'll push through updates to fix these things. Cheers! Thanks for the valuable input!

Mate I think you need to do another brew and pretend your a complete newbie and do everything as if you trust the machine and see how it comes out. You did intervene a lot for your first batch which shows your experience but im curious to see how good it would be for a complete newbie as these wifi controlled systems seem to be marketed that way. I think in some ways you gave the system a bit of a pass as you were able to leverage your experience which makes me think this system is not a beginner system. Anyway great demo as usual Gash, keep up the good work!

Shouldn’t you leave the hop filter off for the mash, boil and whirlpool and only install it just before wort transfer? Doesn’t it prevent full grain recirc and full hop whirlpool extraction?

I have an embarrassing admission to make. I did my first G40 brew day today and everything was going great until I went to transfer my cooled wort into my fermenter. I used an immersion chiller so all of the wort in the G40 was at pitching temperature. I fitted my unit with the drain valve. So the plan was to position my fermenter under the valve and open it, letting the wort drain into the fermenter. When I opened the valve I got no flow. So I connected the recirculation tube and tried the pump. No wort. After 15 minutes of futility and not having any other ideas I decided to dump the batch, flip the G40 over, remove the bottom cover to get at the plumbing, and I could immediately see the pump inlet tube was clogged with hop matter. So I took the tube off of the pump inlet and blew hard into it to dislodge the hop matter. Hooked everything back up and all was well. Someone elsewhere suggested my problem was caused by user error because I didn't use the included counter-flow chiller. Right. What did not occur to me was to just reconnect the recirculation tube at the top of the G40 and then blow into it. Doh!! Yep, I had a Homer Simpson moment and it cost me a batch of nut brown ale. That said, I am disappointed that my G40 was brought down by 3oz of Northern Brewer hop pellets.

I heard back from Grainfather support today. Kudos to them for getting back to me so quickly. They are focusing on the false bottom. They asked me for a video showing me installing and removing it. And they also wanted a photo of the underside of the false bottom with a ruler on it showing the diameter. I went to go make the video and noticed that I was having an issue getting a good seal between the false bottom outer lip and the bottom of the G40. I could feel a gap in one spot. So we will see what Grainfather has to say after they review the info I provide. I can continue to use the system but until this gets sorted out I will need to use a hop spider.

Could maybe try jamming it in with some silicone hose or something. Do you ever use the g30 without top plate? I understand that you have to lift up overflow pipe and to be careful in case of stuck mash don't leave the bottom with out wort. (Sorry for my English)

You can change the boil temperature in the app if you’re having trouble reaching a true boiling temp. I’m at sea level, so haven’t touched it on my G30, but I know the option is available. The larger surface area of the G40 would mean the temp would leave the wort quicker as well

This is going to come over like I am a know all its not meant in that way. However this has to be one of the most frustrating videos I have watched of someone brewing with a piece of kit like this. Instead of constantly stirring and poking at the grains when they are mashing why not let the system do what it is meant to do? Set the pump flow rate and leave it alone to get the job done and you would end up with a far clearer wort? Then at the boil phase . When it is ramping to the boil why not leave the lid on and let it come to a boil in the most efficient way then once at the boil start the program remove the lid and add your hops and continue the prog to the end point. I know it was your first go but you have to trust the system first then iron out faults as the come along... not try to find them before they have occurred.

John we all brew different ways mate, I've been using one vessel systems since they came out years ago, and for me to judge this system against my other systems I'll use it the same as I use all my others. Stirring during any mash on any system is a good thing. I will never have a lid on while ramping to the boil, one distraction and it will be boil over, especially while distracted with a "live" recording not sure you've ever done one but it adds a whole lot of distractions to the brew day, there's no going back and fixing something or doing something different, I see this on a lot of other channels, and its trickery and lies. The ramp fault has been rectified, and this is exactly what I was told to do by Grainfather, test it, look for bugs and faults. That was part of the instructions in my contract for me to receive the unit free before the release date. Anyone can throw grain in and whack the lid on and walk away, which in my experience and opinion you should never do, but less will be learnt. Cheers John!

@@HomeBrewNetwork Been brewing for many years on a G30 and as John said at some point it might have been a little strange BUT as you said in response your job is to find the holes and as a newbie this video is a great learning curve. I have also had the air bubble issues on the G30 and this after some time using the system and yet it took me a while to get it going again. Wish I had seen this video before as i would have been able to shave some time and lot's of stress of my brew day. What i do now is keep a bottle of Co2 handy and whenever i need to do a blowback I just use Co2 and it works a charm. So for an experienced home brewer it might be a bit frustrating to watch but for everyone else I guess job well done including me. The PID is most certainly an issue and I guess a potential point of improvement as stated there is NO overshooting of the boil and I actually use an external element to push my wart to boiling point. Stirring between the mash cycle is a must for me in some styles but not all and I for one like the fact that I would not have to take anything out to get it done. Don't tell anyone for rear of retribution BUT i secretly brew on the G30 when doing a sticky mash without a top plate just for this reason ;) Nice vid bud and I will have to give this bad boy a go at some point. BTW I do not even know where my G30 lid is TBH. Have never used it as I hate the design with a hole in the lid. Once again our little secret please :)

This video totally convinced me not to go with this system or others like it. Do not like the integrated pump and going thru the site glass for recirculation. Lifting the grain basket and dripping all over the floor etc. I built my own 240V electric system with 3 kettles and a separate brew controller, hoses and valves. This system just does not provide enough advantages over the current system and too many things can go wrong. However maybe for someone who is just staring out with an electric system might be ok but for the cost of this product seems a bit finicky.
