Mango & Passionfruit Sour Brewday - Grainfather G40

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

With summertime on the horizon its no better time to brew up a tart, fruity and refreshing Mango and Passionfruit sour on my Grainfather G40.
In this brewday episode I also get to chat with Cillian Fahey, owner of Larkins Brewing Company in Co. Wicklow about the anticipated release of their new Acid Passion range of sour beers. I'm also using 'Sour Hour' dried yeast by WHC Lab and get to talk to yeast expert Philip Nutt about this simple to use souring yeast.
Recipe links coming soon.

Hi Glen, thanks for the video this is really cool! BTW for aerating the wort you can buy a wort paddle from Grainfather for 35$, then you attach it to a drill and that will make the brewday a bit easier! Cheers!

You shouldn't let your grain bed gets exposed before you start sparing in a continuous sparge. Your grain bad will collapse and get thicker, prolonging the sparge and actually encouraging the formation of funnels.

Super video again Glen, hope your arse recovered! 🤣 Love the upgrade in video production since your return Great to see you using WHC labs yeast, shame it so hard to get some of the strains in homebrew packs. Will have to try true sour once it’s available.

Thanks very much Jon! Arse got a right auld shock in that video....I had to keep rolling, didn't know I was so close 🤣 Great to be partnered with WHC on yeasts going forward. The good news is there will be a release soon of homebrew packs on a variety of yeasts.....I'll post an update on a vid when that happens 👍🍻

Awesome video. I just got a G40 and my first brew was an Irish red ale from your videos. Just a question, How much did you configure the mash efficiency and losses on your G40 app?

as far as sparging goes with me i have a spare brewzilla 35l as i use a brewzilla gen4 35 litre the spare brewzilla which is the previous model acts as my sparge water and i just pump the sparge water through the recirc arm into the bz35l and what water i have left over i use as cleaning water for gen4 my bz65l hass come somewhat redundant but will be keeping it for when i want to do bigger batches.

Cheers dude and thanks a million once again for connecting me with the guys from WHC! I'll drop across to you with a few bottles once I bottle. This is actually a great 'base recipe' for sours, allowing full creativity with fruit additions in secondary. There's complex sours and easy sours.....give this one a go, change out the fruit, I'll drop over some yeast 👍🍻🍻

Hi Glen, I'd like to try out a few sours but starting on the easy side-if you have 2 minutes can you answer these questions. How (and when ) did you add the fruit, was it fresh or a puree? How sour did it get in terms of taste, I know this is objective, but i have never been a massive fan of really sour and tart. Was the yeast good compared to something like Philly Sour, if you have any experience with other yeasts. Cheers man, keep up the great vids!

Hey Tom, so sorry for the late reply! This yeast is as good as Philly, I tried a comparison and it worked out great! I've always used frozen fruit with absolutely no issues, fantastic taste and aroma and I don't worry about sanitizing the frozen fruit either. I'm a total Mango Head, I always add the chunks to a hop net before dropping them in. Thanks for the support and comments 👍🍺

Many thanks! It's a CIP (Clean In Place) system so it's very easy to clean at the end of brewday. I do recommend using The Grainfather Cleaning Powder, run through the system for 15mins at 60°C, drain, scrub and rinse 👍🍺
