Great video, I admire people who have the means and ability to pull something like this off. If only sets like this were made today, over some of the high price crowd funding stuff from big companies, that would be amazing fun sets with a feel of vintage, but expand the original lines relatively cheaply.

I had the original cardboard playset. Fun in its own way. My GI Joe team stopped Cobra from launching that missile almost every week. Even when I played Doctor Who with my figures, Cobra failed in their launch attempts. Your custom looks great. Fantastic job. I am envious of this community's ability to work with paint and glue. I work with printed tab and slot assembly cardstock paper models because I can print it out in color and not get glue or paint a over me. (Like I always do)

I really enjoyed this video. The discussion of your thought processes as you worked through the build were really excellent. I've been stacking up stuff to customize into JOE vehicles and playsets for a while, but I wouldn't have thought to look for this set. So many of the cheap items have great sculpts, but use such cheap, shampoo-bottle plastic that I shy away from them. You've convinced me to order this playset and add yet another project to my already too-long to-do list.

i was 10 in 82 when the G.I. Joe 3 3/4" toy line came out, personally i always loved those late 70s/early 80s cardboard playsets. but i literally never even knew this set existed until the early 2000s when i got my first computer, there were A LOT of Sears and others exclusives i had no idea existed when i was a kid. i remember my friend in the early 80s had the famous Blue Snaggletooth and i use to marvel at it because it was the only one i had ever seen and he had no memory of where it had come from, it was like the mid 90s after i had become a collector that i learned about it and solved that old mystery.

@Its.Chad. Would love to see more. People are aching for ideas about good alternatives for playsets and vehicles since Hasbro has the "We'll make it for you, but at 3 times the cost that it should be." attitude... Mattel has at least tried with $100 and under playsets(two Castle Grayskulls, a Snake Mountain and the Lightyear base(too bad it was tied to a mediocre movie...). Yeah, they gigged us with Eternia, but apparently every company wants it's chance to be a b-hole...

Turned out great! Those Toyhax stickers really made the computer parts look amazing. Really does look like a good version of the old Cobra Cardboard base. That playset looks like it'd be great to customize as a service bag for a Halo Mantis. One bit of advice- DUPLICOLOR AUTOMOTIVE SPRAY PAINT FOR PLASTIC AND VINYL is what you want to use on any custom. It comes in a bunch of colors and bonds to plastic, vinyl and even rubber! It's amazing for customs and can be a perfect universal primer coat- taking acrylics without any problems. I keep a can of black and one of white for primer now (though I love that Tamiya for models).

Destro did a great job purchasing that base, Cobra Commander seems satisfied. Cobra La La La! Also the Click N' Play brand have a nice base, command center, a ton of vehicles & aircrafts, lookout, checkpoint and living quarters that scale really well with O' Rings Joe, the downside is that they became popular and are difficult to find in Amazon.

You sir, are a true genius and customizer. So many people today think that popping some parts off of a figure and putting them on another one is customizing. There is SO much more to it than just boil and pop, and you have shown that masterfully here.

Alright I must admit when I first saw that Wal Mart playset at the beginning of this video I did not like it at all. I thought to myself "no way would I have chosen that one". That ssaid, I hung in there to watch the full video. Once the primer was on & I saw how the missile would work I started to change my thoughts a little. Seeing it finished I have to admit that I too would like to do one. You did great.

If Playmobil started making 1/18 scale buildings, they'd corner the Joe market in a heartbeat! And even in their chonky scale, you can find lots of forest, jungle, and rocky scenery that'll work in 1/18 scale.

I use the same craft/dollar store paint when I'm painting terrain. I just add a little water or paint thinner and it goes on much smoother. Any that set looks fantastic. Have you thought about doing a light black or brown wash followed by a white or grey dray wash to help bring out the details while add some more grung to the piece? Its what I do. Its simple and quick and I'm very happy with the results. Especialy since its great for hiding tiny f**k ups my old hands just arent up to anymore. A lot of people do a wash last but I like to do a second dry brush last to cover up any staining from the wash on the high areas. I get a little too heavy doing washes sometimes. 😂😂 I love your use of magnets btw. I got to try that in the future. I use toyhax as well.
