    I'm pretty sure I remember hearing that the makers of this movie were huge 40k fans, and when asked about it, they admitted they were "inspired" by it. Of course, legally they couldn't come out and say it, but this was basically meant to be a precursor to 40k, showing mankind's first contact with the Warp. P.S. The gothic "cathedral" design of the ship was lifted almost wholesale from 40k as well.

  • @Requiem4u

    @Requiem4u

    Yes, the writers have said they got inspiration from 40k so some Warhammer fans decided Event Horizon is an unofficial 40k prequel. But they've also said they took inspiration from Hellraiser. The conversation at 45:00 about how the two sections would just need a single spur to be destroyed or a clamp to be released to free the forward decks as a lifeboat. The reason you have so many explosive charges starting from the rear is that the force multiplies in order to provide inertia to the forward decks to move them far enough away from the gravity drive in the rear as it opens up the tear in space and gets drawn in. Also be good for you both to look at 'Life' together.

    Well... it was an inspiration, not the MAIN inspiration, but still. It was a movie that was very well done. The sound work could use work. When they just gave up and started using cartoon sound effects, I hated that, and once you hear it, you will NEVER again be able to NOT hear it. I wish I could get the original footage and have a million dollars to try and clean up a bunch of minor shit. The first time you see it, it is great. You go in and you watch it and you just experience it. That's the best. The problem is every time you see it afterwords, the errors start creeping in. It was terrifying, and horrifying, and funny, and thought provoking. I just wish it had a better editor.

    Same with the Matrix. It was supposed to be a neural network that they used the humans for, not energy. But the execs thought it was too far out for normies to understand. It actually makes MORE sense but the execs are just that stupid.

    Due to constantly working around this time in the '90s, and out socially progressing my cirrhosis in what little sleepless free time I had, I didn't see Event Horizon until it came on cable late one night. Even better, I saw it practically at the same time as 'In The Mouth Of Madness' and 'Lord Of Illusions' within a very short period of time. Great horror movies I should've watched in the theaters, but repeatedly enjoyed afterward. I tend to link those three together in some self-created mid '90s horror trend which was short lived but I greatly enjoyed.

    It was inspired from Warhammer 40k. The warp or immaterium. Corrupting the ship with posession from an unknown demon. In 2017, on the Twitter, the screen writer also acknowledged a connection (conscious or otherwise) cementing this idea even further stating that he was a huge fan of 40k himself. This is mentioned on the ol’ wiki in the development section. It is not however connected to the Warhammer franchise but often regarded as a spiritual prequel to the discovery of the warp by a pre emperor human civ.

    The band Zao named an album after this movie which includes numerous audio samples throughout. I only know this because my friend in high school was obsessed with the band and tried to get me to listen to them constantly. I have to admit, the samples sound pretty cool juxtaposed with the music.

    Went to the cinema with a couple of mates to see this one night. Not really knowing what we were going to see. We woulda been 16 / 17 years old. We are all too scared to walk home alone after watching it! - Really visceral, haunting film. The idea that hell exists and that the ship had been there was a freaky one.

    When you guys were talking about those rare moments in horror movies where a character actually leave before anything bad happens, that reminded me of this one movie called the Mausoleum(I think) that I saw, which was made in like, the late 70s or early 80s I think about this woman who was possessed all the way back in childhood after her mom died at an early age and she’d kinda just sleep with guys behind her husbands back and kill them in gruesome ways. But there was one old black maid with an attitude who was supposed to look after her in that movie who immediately saw some unnatural spooky shit in the hallway leading over to her room, some fog rolling along the floor, so she goes back down stairs and says “great googly moogly! I haven’t drank in a long time but I’m gonna need somethin to drink before I handle this!” And she just takes a swig of wine or something. Then when she walks back up to the ladies room, she just pokes her head in to see her in her bed possessed and she’s like “AW HELL NAW!” And leaves lmfao. She was the smartest character in the whole god damn movie, she was easily my favorite character in the movie and she was only on screen for less than 5 minutes!

    Dog Soldiers (one of the best werewolves movies out there) had its negatives lost and so has only ever had a poor transfer to Blueray until recently when they found it! Just watched on 4K and it’s awesome. So here’s hoping the negatives aren’t spoilt but just missing and will be found soon!!!

    This was a great movie, nicely industrial ships and such believable characters, no alien creatures running around for welcome change. From a science point of view its interesting the level of detail they put into some things and some of the things they glossed over!

    16:40 . Studio executives and "Focus Group" screenings are KNOWN for having weak stomachs in screening. The "it's so gory it made them sick" is just a marketing gimmick used to create "this is a must-see" desire around a media product. You had the same thing with older movies and "audiences" (supposedly) fainting and getting sick from watching scenes that would be considering quite cheesy by modern standards (like the vomit projecting in The Exorcist, for example). The only SOURCE for this information, however, is the studio itself or on the other of that, tabloids. Funny how that works, huh? :P

    Also, it would interesting to note it was the "religious types" as well as the "nice progressive types" that used to lose their s**t about the Exorcist, or just any movies that had the word Blood, Satan, Demon or anything like that in the title (which I would assume was a DELIBERATE troll by the filmmakers of the era). The only difference between the religious criticism and the progressive criticism is that they slammed different things in the same movies (and not all the criticism was limited to the time of release, either).

    To this day this is still one of the few genuine scary films made - and great sci fi - very close to Alien. I had the joy of seeing this in a very early THX cinema, and the use of sound was like nothing I had ever experienced before. The scene where Sam Neill is walking around and the shutter opened - never seen so many people in a cinema shit themselves - it was awesome. If you haven't experienced this film in surround sound you need to make it happens - it makes everything twice as good, twice as scary - and there are so many sounds that happen behind it it is really unnerving - extremely cleverly done.

    I thought this movie was excellent and I also thank it. I saw this in the movies with my first real girlfriend when I was 16. It was our first date and it definitely helped the young, nervous young man that I was at the time, get my date to hold onto me for the first time. It absolutely terrified her and it absolutely made my night having her hold onto me the entire film. Needless to say, we were bonded after it was over and I wasn't so nervous about things so much anymore. We ended up going to the prom together a couple years later. What a movie! 🍿

    i didn't work on Event Horizon - i was midway through my degree. But i did get to work on 2007 Sunshine movie - i animated all the motion graphics around the various sets like the cockpit, the O2 room, sun room etc etc - good fun and some fun stories on that film like Chris Evans getting so buff midway through training they had to stick him on a crash diet because the shot continuity didn't match lol. And they used the good-laff chef as a stunt double after shaving his hair lol *edit* - lol just realised you mentioned Sunshine 10 mins later hehe and yes Alien Isolation is a f**king perfect game!!! The Working Joe's are so good and the whole game just oozes atmosphere and tension. I'm midway through it for the 2nd time.
