Tropic Thunder was filmed on my Island of Kauai in Hawaii. Known as “The Garden Island”, we are the go to place anytime Hollywood wants to film any Jungle Scenes for a Movie. King Kong (1976), South Pacific, Jumanji, all the Jurassic Parks, The Descendants, Soul Surfer, North, North Shore, Flight of the Intruder, Dinosaur, Fantasy Island (TV Series), Six Days Seven Nights, Lilo & Stitch, Jungle Cruise, F9, and a ton more! I remember when Tropic Thunder was here filming. They rented my new Box Truck to use in the movie as a “Film Crew” Vehicle. They painted it up for the Movie and when they returned it, they had to paint it back to it’s original color. I mean, to the minute of detail of factory finish. I was like, you guys don’t HAVE TO do that. Close enough was fine. But they were willing to spend a lot of money to return my truck better than new! So from then on, I never wondered again why they use up Millions of Dollars to Film a Movie! 🤷♂️ I also got to meet Nick Nolte! And let me tell you! His hair and rough look in the movie was NOT done by the makeup department… it was ALREADY Movie Perfect ! 😅
What's equally and hilariously brilliant is Robert Downey Jr. did the audio commentary in full character
I managed a movie theater when Tropic Thunder came out and the biggest complaint we got was about the Booty Sweat parody ad at the beginning. The look on people's faces when I told them it was actually part of the movie was priceless
"never go full re-tayrd" The genius behind this film WAS Ben Stiller. He wrote and directed it. It was definitely spoofing on real Hollywood people in the industry. a little FYI...Downy improvised most of his role in this film.

Ben Stiller was here maybe at his best ever. RDJ improvising his role is amazing but he is a great actor, so I would expect that. Ben Stiller is not that great (or he has shitty taste in movie roles), so his performance here is perfect. He came out as a good dramatic actor which surprised me.
A massively, _massively_ underrated film - an incredibly complex and shrewd deconstruction of so many Hollywood tropes, it's impossible to keep count. Very close to perfect, IMO.

Kind of surprising that Drinker didn't realize that Cruise's character was Harvey Weinstein.
When I went to see this in the theater I was late and came in during the “Satan’s Alley” trailer and honestly thought that was a trailer for a real Hollywood Oscar-bait movie!
Downey Jr's character is definitely a stab at over the top method actors like Daniel Day Lewis, where most movie-goers don't know what the actor actually looks like outside of a role, and going a bit meta with it that the actor himself doesn't even know who he is after so many roles.

Seems like it. Could be also a parody of old Hollywood's approach of casting white actors as different ethnicities, with sometimes hillarious results like John Wayne's Genghis Khan or my personal favourite (because it is quite good from the acting standpoint, just ludicrous in concept), Audrey Hepburn as Native American in The Unforgiven (she was also cast as a Native woman in Green Mansions couple years prior but that movie is absolutely forgotten).
