I just caught something now. the first time Frodo calls Gollum Smeagol, he replies, "What did you call me?" he's so shocked and surprised that he reverts back to 'me' instead of 'us'.

@@JMel2012 Before the LOTR trilogy came along, cinematic adaptions of the books weren't very well thought of. Never had any live actions or did anything groundbreaking. What ever the trilogy did, they've been officially labeled a timeless masterpiece.

Should I continue? 😉

When the rain starts at the beginning of helms deep . . . It starts clanking on the battle armor all around and that was hands down one of the coolest things . Gives me chills everytime .

"Sauron was a pussycat compared to Morgoth." Definitely. Sauron commanded Orcs and Nazgul, Morgoth had legions of dragons, Balrogs, and many more unsavory beasts.

The ''legion of balrogs" thing was retconned by Tolkien in his letters because his early concept of what a balrog is was a lot lesser than what they eventually became. There were thus less than a dozen balrogs and probably only like four or five. Glaurung and Ancalagon were much more powerful than Smaug sure but Morgoth did not have very many of them and he only had flying dragons for one battle and he lost that one courtesy of Earendil and his flying boat. The unsavoury elements were Sauron's pets or, in the case of the spiders, weren't exactly allied to Morgoth.

Tolkien realized that Morgoth would have won with legions of balrogs he turned it to like 7. 2 saying in Gondolin, many dying in the war of wrath, one to Gandalf, and a few others went to other mountains

The portrayal of Gollum in these movies has always been top notch. Even in the diverse Hobbit trilogy nobody complains about the scene with Gollum. But the one Gollum scene I remember is from the animated portrayal when Bilbo escapes him at the back door. I always think back to the delivery of the line and how perfect it captured the rage: “Thief! Thief Baggins! We hates it forever!”

I think the extended version does a lot for the Two Towers and I'd actually recommend that people watch it. Will add more comments later but I came by to say that I think its a bloody embarrassment and an absolute insult that Andy Serkis was not nominated for a best actor Oscar for his portrayal of Gollum. I actuall read that Peter Jackson campaigned really hard for it but the Oscar committee was too narrow minded and pedantic to allow it... Sad.

Although i agree with you, Andy is more competent that most oscar winners anyway and it shows. I cant name a single role he failed to deliver on, that kind of actor isn't about the accolades just the content and love of the job. I hope he is as good a director as he is an actor!

I just had the opportunity to sit down and listen to this and the former stream on The Fellowship Of The Ring. Thing with me is, years and years ago, I was stuck in a horribly abusive relationship. The only time that I got any real solace when she was at work and I was home was by watching the Trilogy, as it was well done enough that I was sort of pulled out of my situation. Getting so engrossed in the movie made me forget where I was physically, mentally, emotionally.. I'm pretty damn sure it was the only thing that kept me from cramming a gun-barrel into my mouth and pulling the trigger, if we're being brutally honest. You're absolutely right in that the fans of the books and these movies are united. I loved sitting down and listening to you guys talk about how much you loved this movie and the others, I always enjoy the banter between all of you when you're together. You guys are awesome, keep up the amazing work. In large part because of this stream and the aforementioned one, I've gone ahead and re-ordered the Extended Edition Blu-Ray discs and this upcoming weekend will be the first time I'll have watched them since I got out of there. Thank you for reminding me as to why I love these movies.

You guys got the Sauron bit wrong: the gay boyfriend and the sassy smarter sister are things to ruin heroes with. We'll find out, that Sauron wasn't really evil at all, he was just misunderstood, and there was a truly evil evil lord - I don't know, Larry, or something - from whom he enherited his tower, his cool armour, Mordor, the idea to make rings and even his orks (there'll be two bumbling orks following him around, commenting on how cool it would be to turn Saruman evil, or how Moria would make a nice home for a balrog, and s like that). You see, Sauron just wanted to save Middle Earth, and the heroes in Lord of the Rings were the real evil for killing him. Basically it'll be the Maleficent/Cruella-method all over again.

Technically Sauron was just following Morgoth but they both did horrible things. Morgoth destroyed the world as much as he could taking the 4 most powerful things out of existence. He also tortured elves so much they became orcs. Now Sauron was one of the people who joined Morgoth in the creation of the world in the music. He actually held Angband (Morgoth’s stronghold) when he was captive. He also did things like torturing men and killing elves with werewolves. Actually Sauron only made it to the second age as the Valar who commanded the army that took Morgoth didn’t have time to deal with him.

In regards to helms deep with not firing arrows as soon they in range remember what Gandalf tells Aragorn (paraphrasing here) "first light on the fifth day look to the east". All they have to do is hold out until then and survive. It's not about winning here but delaying and surviving. So let the orcs do their intimidation and take their time as it's not about killing them but delaying and if they delay themselves even for only 10 more minutes so be it as you need all the time you can get.

@@Drawnartist I don't agree. You can't miss a target that size, and delaying them for a few more minutes wasn't going to make any difference. I'd deny them their intimidation, given that - as Theoden said - morale among the defenders was very fragile.

1:27:30 I think the idea was to stall them as much as possible until Gandalf arrived. So if the Uruks want to waste time beating their chests and showboating, that's in the best interests of Rohan. That guy shooting that arrow and kickstarting the battle cost may have cost them the minutes they needed to hold the keep longer until Gandalf showed up. That's at least how I always interpreted it.

Man I freaking love Boromir. I also love Faramir's character, although I do prefer the book version of Faramir. Some people might say he was "too pure and good" but I think there can be at least a couple people in the world who don't just immediately give in to the Ring's power. That being said, it makes sense why they did things the way they did in the movie

I remember seeing Nerd of Rings’ video on it and I went, “Ah, I see what they are complaining about.” But I always felt the movie version, particularly the Extended Cut, gave us a relatable story of a man who overcame temptation and proved what it truly meant to be a good guy. His only flaw being a need to please his ungrateful father who loved him but never demonstrated it genuinely.

Those scenes with Boromir, Faramir and Denethor in Osgiliath give all three of them some extra character development. So yeah, the movies did an excellent job

That scene between Data and Worf highlights the importance of the chain of command. The importance is that regardless of right or wrong the two senior command officer's must preserve the chain of command. Questions and gripes always got up the chain, never down. However... The first officer must express his concern, out of the eyes or ears of the crew. The crew must see the two senior officer's in lockstep. The consequence would be a loss in confidence of the orders given. Bad moral is poisonous in a combat situation. This is why good NCO's are so important in combat. When the men lose confidence in thier officer's, because of what's been said above. Who do they turn to? NCO's(Non Comissioned Officer's).

"Theoden King stands alone." Ok maybe a little out there, but The Two Towers was my favorite film in the series. The Ents, Helm's Deep, Rohan, the music and my two absolute favorite characters shining together: Legolas and Gimli. EDIT: Wow, glad to know I'm not the only one who loves this one in the trilogy. Seems like everyone I know likes Fellowship the most.

It’s very interesting rewatching this after the guys have seen S1 of Rings of Power. The absolute praise for attention vs absolute disappointment and anger at RoP is very telling.

When Arwen's father prophesies her fate, the music and visuals wreck me everytime. Like the Tazmanian Devil, I get so bummed I could just eat the violin Bugs was playing. Especially the bit where her father says, _"There's nothing for you here, only death."_ ...gee, thanks dad, lets talk more often

I recently rewatched the Lord of the rings trilogy for the 1st time in 10 years and it was like meeting up with a long lost friend again. I then realised that I have never seen the extended cuts 🙈 so my wife surprised me with the extended DVD set for valentines day because she is awesome and watching them (back2back) 💪was like watching the movies for the 1st time again. Hail the fellowship and the 1 trilogy to rule them all.

One trilogy of films, that if you ask someone: which is your favourite? There is no wrong answer. Mine is Two towers and my wife’s is Felowship, but we both can just nod in agreement at each others choices or even if Return of the King is chosen by someone else. Brilliant films.... Amazon don’t stand a chance of coming close to the quality these films have, even 20 odd years later.

In the books they make a much bigger deal out of the Uruk-Hai being able to tolerate daylight. The fact that the sacrifice of the Elves at Helm's Deep isn't referenced elsewhere in the films is probably because they were tacked on in that way, so they don;'t organically into the story. In the books Elrond has made Aragorn becoming king the precondition for him marrying Arwen, so you have none of the faux reluctance to be king that they have in the film. Elrond's pain at the being separated forever from Arwen would be made more acute by remembering his brother Elros (Aragorn's distant ancestor), who chose to be counted among Men and therefore eventually died (after hundreds of years).

Literally just finished watching the Extended Edition with friends - what a timing :) Timeless classic of a trilogy with this movie being quite meme-worthy and quotable: "They're taking the hobbits to Isengard!" "Whats taters Precious?" "Potatoes! Boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew!" Legolad skatin' n' slidin' on a shield down the stairs no-scoping fools left and right as the music picks up... For me it’s that it was Fellowship that got me into reading fantasy stories to begin with. Before that I only ever read science fiction or nonfiction cuz I was autistic about that sort of thing, but Fellowship opened up a whole new world of imagination to me. Granted, trying to pick the favorite of the three is splitting hairs, but still.

Same. Fellowship has so many twists and turns, it feels like you're on a journey, whereas Towers and Return feel much more focused on a small handful of locations. Nothing wrong with that, of course, I just prefer the feeling of adventure and travel of Fellowship. I could see a young Shigeru Miyamoto being influence by it when he was coming up with the concept for Legend of Zelda.

I think it shows a little bit of Boromir caring for the hobbits when they come out of Moria. Think he tells Aragorn to give the little ones time before moving on.

There were models they called "bigatures" - because they were miniatures that were really big.. I'm not sure that Andy Serkis had been cast yet when they did the Gollum shots in Moria, and his features and performance had a huge effect on the way they did the final CG.

One of my favorite parts of the Two Towers was at Helms Deep when the Oruk hai army had stopped and one lightning strike lit up the battle field and ALL the people on Helms Deep walls have either O' shit or awe on their faces at the sheer size of the enemy.

Hell yeah, Two Towers is my favorite as well. I love Isengard as an antagonist. Gandalf vs Balrog, the Warg attack. The Battle of Helms Deep has the most tension and despair with the scared civilians, boys and old men having to fight. Epic speeches from Theoden and Saruman. Not easy picking the best of three masterpieces, but it's Two Towers for me.

Saw Two Towers in the theater when it premiered. The beginning of the movie reminded me of the opening of Star Trek III The Search for Spock, you know what I mean? Gandalf vs Balrog got my blood and adrenaline flowing. Whodathunkkit that they would be able to show Gandalf bringing the fight to Balrog?! It was perfect.

This is amazing. I happen to be starting the 2nd disc of the two towers extended cut. So happy, GO AWAY NOW!

The conversation about immortality around 1:05:00 reminded me of a 2015 movie called He Never Died. The MC is a man who's lived an unknown number of years and he's portrayed as weary with life, completely disinterested in people and spends most of his time sleeping and going to bingo. It's a pretty good movie, worthy of a review IMO.

He Never Died is a great low budget indie flick! Henry Rollins was perfect lead in it. Movie also features Steven "Trevor from GTA V" Ogg.

Minus the tits, Altered Carbon s1 ends up as an interesting commentary on how an indefinite lifespan in a cursed world would result in a convergence to 40K Dark Eldar-esque perversity and nihilistic decadence

I agree with Gary and Drinker…also my favorite of the three films. In the book series, I come down on the side of the third as it amazingly ties so many threads together and completes an epic journey through an entire world.

Just started the annual watching of LOTR for Easter. Thank you for this conversation of an amazing adaptation to another one of the greatest stories ever told.

Back in the Fellowship, Andy Serkis wasn't yet picked as Gollum, and Peter Jackson was expecting to use the same model in the Two Towers. But when Andy Serkis was brought onboard, he convinced Jackson to film Gollum's actual movements using Serkis' own body as a reference to make the performance more convincing (Serkis always wore a white fat suit because of this), and so Gollum was remade to fit Andy Serkis' movements, yet still retaining Gollum's more nimble side.

While Drinker is correct that the Elves didn't take part in the battle of Helm's Deep in the book, he's wrong about the Rohirrim fighting alone. In the book the Dunedain Rangers showed up to fight alongside them and they traveled with Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli through the Paths of the Dead, and were still with them when they arrived at the Pelenor Fields. In the movie the trio charges with just the army of the dead, but in the book they still had a force of Rangers with them from Helm's Deep.

57:29 - I remember seeing Two Towers in the cinema with a friend who is a Tolkien expert. I'd only read the books once, as a child, so I knew nothing about the story. When the Elves showed up at Helm's Deep, he put his hand to his head. I whispered, "What's wrong?" He replied, "Plot-... induced... tumor. ... Elves... where... they don't... belong."

Elrond and his brother got to choose if they want to be Human or Elven. Elrond chose Elven, but his children had to choose too and Arwen chose to be Human. So she did not live eternity after Aragorn died, she lived a human life span from the moment she made that choice. That whole montage with her standing in a ruined city never made sense apart from emotional standpoint, but Arwen would have known her own family history.

36:30 In Russia in the 90s one writer wrote a couple "fan-fiction" books (or as I would prefer, apocryphs) about Middle-Earth. One of them was about Ringwraiths' origins, each one of them got their own background (barbaric clan chieftain, haradrim prince, a renowned scholar and healer etc), their own way of meeting (disguised) Sauron and their own motivation and reasons for accepting the ring. And some of them indeed took it with good intentions, planning to help the people, to better the world - before being dragged into the nightmarish existence of a Nazgul. I know that Tolkien did not want others to play with his characters, and legally that book could not have been approved by "Tolkien estate", but it was written so well, so believable, with so much respect for the world he created, that I honestly wish it would become the canon. It would definitely provide a many times better material for an adaptation than anything Amazon's dumb and talentless hacks pulled out of their rear end.

Good to see Mauler around. I miss his massive video essays so much.

I remember seeing a super early CAM version before it hit theaters in my country. I was too young to really appreciate Fellowship in theaters the year before - I needed that time leading up to Towers to process what I'd seen (not to mention all the times my friends and I would reenact the cave troll scene on the playground) to really get what LotR was and realize how much it had influenced me.

Fun Facts: - While everyone always does the Aragorn toe thing, there is one more "live" stun that he did. The dagger that Lurtz throws at him at AmonHen was an actual dagger. The stuntman miscalculated the distance and throw it at his head, the shot of Aragorn deflecting the dagger with his sword is actual Vigo deflecting an actual dagger thrown at his face with his sword. - John Reese Davies did Treebeard differently than Gimli. He practiced speaking while inhaling at the same time. Its what gives Treebeard his long, strange manner of speech.

As far as Smeagol vs Gollum, he had the One Ring for HOW LONG... and even after ALL of THAT, he ALMOST made it back out from under the influence of the One Ring. Imagine how strong his psyche was to last THAT long...

You, loquacious sirs, have made my day…well, twice, if I’m honest. Listened to this two times as LOTR is an annual re-watch and has been since forever. Enjoyed the conversation between y'all and gained a new respect for AZ and Gary. Drinker and Mauler I’m already a devoted listener/watcher of all your content and have commented on that prior. Meandering tangential conversations aside (lol), you’re spot-on about what makes a great story, especially in film. Keep up the fine work, good sirs.

I do like your comments and observations. Like pointing out that Viggo broke his toe is a 'lame fact'. I always thought the elves at Helm's deep was a master - stroke and makes more sense than Galadriel to send them from Lothlorien (Not from Rivendell; Elrond sent no elves so why Haldir brings word from him makes no sense) than to call the Dunedain to go looking for Aragorn as in the book. You are right that the loss of all the elves pretty much is skipped over, but it's like this in film battles. The survivors cheer and clap happily and nobody bothers about the widows and orphans left by 60% casualties. And of course the women should have fought at Helm's deep rather than the Zimmermen and boys in shorts, but we can't bear to see the women killed, can we?

The Dead Marshes is my favorite part of the Two Towers, along with the Ent March to Isengard.

This movie has so much scenes that gives you goosebums. Merry talking to Pippin: The fires of Isengard will spread, and the forests of Tuckborough and Buckland will burn. And all that was once great and good in this world will be gone. There won't be a Shire, Pippin.

Yeah, I have to agree with the Drinker on how they handled the battle between the balrog and Gandalf the grey. I loved it as a kid, but in hindsight it may be better to handle it more like the drinker described.

I have been loving all the vids from you guys as of late tearing the forthcoming Amazon Rings of Power a new a**hole, to Drinker's Happy Hours discussing the classic LOTR trilogy. It's all gold, and I love being here for the discussion, even as a spectator. It was great hearing everyone's takes on Two Towers, and really enjoyed hearing everyone's opinions on their favourite movie in the trilogy and why. I was surprised to hear of the general love for Two Towers especially. This not because I don't think it is a good film or is lacking outstanding moments of character development or great performances, either...and I do think the extended editions are the true way to see all these films, especially Two Towers. For me, Towers was always closer to the bottom because it has always felt the most disjointed-having to tell 3 separate storylines simultaneously. It has to spend a lot of time introducing new characters, expanding the world even further, and setting things up for Return of the King. It does all these things extremely well, without question, and in terms of the overall trilogy is just as essential to the overall arcs of the characters and plot lines that run through the story as the other two films. Maybe it's because I loved the bond of the Fellowship so much in the first film that their separation, while necessary, leaves a hole. Maybe telling three storylines slows things down significantly... I'm not sure. Whatever way you slice it, LOTR is one large tale and every part is essential. Fellowship of the Ring is the top for me of the 3 films, because it feels the most self contained and linear. It has some of the most poignant emotional moments (ie. Gandalf and Boromir's deaths, Sam's dedication to Frodo), and in terms of setting up the world covers so much ground while simultaneously moving the action forward. You get to see so much of Middle Earth, get introduced to so many different creatures and races and their histories, while falling in love with the characters as the journey bonds them. It sweeps you up in their journey, raises the stakes so effectively, and then leaves you on a genuine cliffhanger at the end. Return was second for me because of the epic battles, and the big emotional payoff at the end. The scene of Theoden rousing the Rohirhim and charging into battle is my favourite scene in the whole trilogy. Looking forward to when you guys cover Return of the King!

I love these talks and glad I came across them. These movies deserve to be appreciated, thank god for Tolkien and Peter Jackson. Also a fun fact you may not of heard is that Helm Hammerhand is actually a sound weapon designed to take advantage of the acoustics of the canyon, or so I've heard. That's how they were able to charge into the remaining horde as well. That's fucking badass eh?

Gees AZ was so spot on and eloquent in his long speech! Star Trek (old) always made me question my beliefs and had so many stories where I challenged what I thought and it made me a better person.

After bingeing most of your vids in about a week, I came to genuinely respect your passion for storytelling and knowledge of how it should be done. I agree with your emphasis on well-written, believable characters that you can enjoy going on a journey with. And the deepest, most fundamental aspects of your criticism have inspired me to finally do something. Something I knew I wasn’t ready for when I first imagined it. For the last 20 years, I have written roughly 1 million words for friends and family, with the simple purpose of earning adequate skill at storytelling. I honed my writing, and even ultimately benefited from deep, painful personal struggles, so that I could finally tell a specific short story. It complements and builds up one of your favorite films. And, incidentally, it also showcases many examples of genuine masculinity displayed in a variety of ways. Further, I feel it sets a very high bar for what respectful, quality “fanfiction” should strive to be. Upholding a beloved work. Understanding it, valuing it, and forgiving any supposed flaws. Contributing a modest addition to someone else’s great legacy. Underscoring and deepening the arc of an already beloved character. Teaching the same positive lessons with the same noble themes, in a slightly different way. Honoring the work, the creator of that work, and all those who have come to love it for what it is. I strove to keep it focused, purposeful, limiting it to just 22,000 words. It may not be perfect, but it certainly tries to be. I hope you will consider giving it a read. Based on what you’ve shown everyone of your true self (behind your hilarious outward persona), I believe you will approve of these efforts. You may be uplifted and proud for having put forth the time to read it. And you will then enjoy going back to watch your favorite trilogy yet again, perhaps getting even more out of the experience. I fucking love this, I mean don’t get me wrong I love when these guys trash the stuff that is trash, but theses guys are great because they praise the things that deserve to be praised.

One thing I hated was that Jackson and co. thought that Legolas would be confused by the concept of death, as if it is alien to Elves. That's not the case at all. What they don't understand about mortality is what happens to humans after they die. They know the spirits of Elves go to the Halls of Mandos and can potentially be reborn (or be fated to wait there till the end of time if they have committed serious crimes), but all they know about humans is that when they die they are judged separately and then disappear from the world entirely and never return. It is part of the "Gift of Men" because they aren't tied to the Earth like the Elves are, many of whom have to hang around forever on Earth, watching things die around them for many thousands of years. There was also an annoying behind the scenes moment for the Hobbit, where Ian McKellen and Cate Blanchette thought Elves didn't cry or laugh and couldn't easily understand human emotions, which is absurd; they aren't Vulcans. And Peter didn't correct them, other than joking that they'd "probably laugh at a good fart joke," so the idea likely came from him and the other writers.

did you know that christopher lee dubbed the german version cause he fluently speaks it? he did so earlier with the awesome 80s animation movie "the last unicorn". maaan that voice gave me chills as a child. christopher lee speaking german is amazing! fun fact: arnie was never allowed to dub himself, cause he sounds like a hillybilly when speaking german :D

Concerning letting Wormtongue go, in the books Wormtongue returned to Isengard way after the Ents destroyed it, meeting Treebeard, so in his own words, "My messages are of no use." It makes more sense than in the film.

As i understood from the directors commentary, the reason he included the starting Balrog fight was because he wanted to pay homage to 007 films with a "balls to the walls" action scene, to set the mood.

Awesome stream gentleman! Anne Rice's "Vampire Chronicles " does an excellent job of portraying the downside of immortality.

Real missed opportunity here, especially after the sensei names for the Cobra Kai episode: One Drinker to Rule Them All One Az to Find Them One Nerd to Bring Them All And in the Mauler Bind Them

Blaidd is great character, also finishing his little quest, you get sweet like sword and comes with an even sweeter ability.
