Ойын-сауық

Really good discussion on how Vader is goal-orientated and his atrocities are in service to those goals rather than just for the sake of “being evil”. The trouble is, Darth Vader is Lawful Evil and the writers are Chaotic Stupid.

The writer for Obi-Wan said in an interview she wanted to top the rogue one scary Vader scene. The problem is, Vader is scary for the inexperienced, and ordinary soldiers. He shouldn't be scary to Obi-Wan who already fought and defeated him. Obi-Wan also shouldn't be rusty. If his goal in life was to protect and eventually train Luke, wouldn't he make sure he is in fighting condition? And don't get me started on how they did the grand inquisitor dirty.

See, I don't think him losing against Vader was a problem of him being old and rusty (although he is), but simply that Vader has become much more powerful and that's why he's so scared of him. Even if Obi-Wan was on his prime, he wouldn't be able to defeat current Vader, who is the chosen one, has the highest midiclorian count, chada chada. The fact he is a burned quadriplegic in a robot suit doesn't affect his force powers (if anything, it increases them for fueling his anger and connection to the dark side).

I was born in 81 and grew up with Star Wars as literally the earliest stories I knew. The Empire Strikes Back was complete sensory overload and the most completely engrossing tale I knew in my young life. It's so good, even nearly 4 decades later, it still grabs my whole attention and sucks me into that world. When I was a kid, I wanted so bad for the story to be real. I used to lay awake at night as a 6, 7, or 8 year old boy creating elaborate Star Wars fantasies in my mind until I fell asleep. Retconning the original trilogy is completely unforgivable. They may own Star Wars, but the story doesn't belong to them. It belongs to the people in whose minds it has taken shape. They can do whatever they like with the new trash they make, but retconning the original story is completely unforgivable. It is creative and cultural vandalism. They are literally stealing a mythology from us. The people doing this and writing this garbage aren't even Star Wars fans. They change the story at will because they never knew it to begin with. It means nothing to them. Even worse, they're doing it to make a social and political point. It's sickening.

I watched the final confrontation between Luke and Vader a million times and would play it out in the back yard and with an older neighbor kid all the time. I'd even get on the ground and writhe around, pleading for my father to save me. One time he asked if he could play as Luke this time and I politely declined. I can't comprehend how anyone that was a fan of the original movies can enjoy the disney ones. They weren't just poorly written. No. They deliberately undid every significant moment by each and every beloved character with a transparent political message specifically crafted to antagonize and provoke the fans of George Lucas's vision. And not a unique political message, but the same damn one we get in every single piece of media, so it's not just ranting and raving against woke sjw bullshit. It's exhausting and beyond old to see this messaging in everything. I would not be surprised if they made a new mini series about a woman of color who decides to turn off the trash compactor in "A New Hope," just to make sure we know that the droids didn't actually save the day. Shit, I just gave them a new bright idea...

It's funny that you were born 14 years before me and yet we had the same experience with Star Wars, I endlessly watched the OT as a child and even liked the prequels because I was a child and didn't understand anything about writing or directing at the time but even so Star Wars meant a lot to me. It shows just how powerful of an emotional bond it has to with the fans that even people born decades apart like us still loved it. What they are doing with it now is nothing short of a travesty, taking established plots and and re-contextualising them into their shitty woke political pandering bullcrap world view destroys escapism. Every movie quite literally starts with "A long time ago, in a galaxy far away" and they fail to understand even this basic thing, ironically making it relate more to our real world makes the characters less relatable. I'm so sick of seeing beloved characters from not just Star Wars but any of these older big franchises being turned into cynical, broken and useless old men that need some shitty new usually female character to do everything for them. In my mind Star Wars ends with Return of The Jedi and it will always remain that way, everything Disney has done is nothing but shit tier fan fiction, actually no not even fan fiction because that implies these people are fans. Whatever this shit is, it doesn't count.

We wanted "Logan" out of an ObiWan series and disney gave us... disney starwars. As it always seems to be, the one thing that could fail is what they've done with an idea. They could have given an on screen death to Asaag Ventress. We could have had Ahsoka. They could have brought in Crimson Dawn and Darth Maul. They could have had parallel stories of Vader hunting the Jedi and Obi Wan having to betray his ideals and fighting the darkside in his own dissolusioned self, intercut with flashback as they both dwelled on the mistakes of the past.

Star Wars has the most broken pieces of lore of any IP of its level of popularity. Star Wars' writing rivals comic book writing for its imbicility. The sad thing is Star Wars' problems as compared to, say, Marvel's problems, are so easy to fix. For example, the stormtroopers not recognizing Kenobi in this latest series. Have the stormtroopers recognize him but write the stormtroopers to be old clones. The region that the truck scene takes place in looks isolated. It's plausible that aging but still useful soldiers would be deployed there. I imagine the interaction playing out like this: The clones realize it's General Kenobi but without Order 66 being in effect they choose to look the other way out of respect for his war career. That could be a plot point to build the series on: Kenobi--with some senatorial help--wrestles away control of some of his former clone subordinates. Maybe Kenobi builds up a network of insiders to hide force sensitives, most important among them being Luke and Leia. Maybe the plan becomes to challenge Palpatine's legitimacy with Leia--peaceful Alderaan behind her, and challenge Vader physically with Luke. In this scenario the Empire's eventual destruction of Alderaan and capture of Leia would make them seem one step ahead of the good guys. The dueling plans of Empire and Rebel/Old Republic supporters would make both sides seem competent. Hell. If you wanted to subvert expectations in a logical way you could write it so that Luke is not immediately force sensitive. As Kenobi's plan expands Leia rises to prominence and Luke gets lost in the shuffle. Then when Luke grows up to save everybody and not kill Vader but convert him it is a triumph of the underdog and the power of the light side of the force. This would also have the happy benefit of subverting the idea that the force is genetic. Luke accesses it when he learns to access it. Leia doesn't end up accessing it because her political acumen becomes more important than combat training and centeredness. But instead we're given an Organa child who is an iredeemable bigot. This civilization that is is going to die in Ep 4, a writing team should spend time making it sympathetic. Instead we're given a story centered on the one character who is obligated to sit tight in order for the rest of the series' plot to work. He's made depressed and inadequate on top of that and his opposition, laughable. I do not understand why this had to be. Star Wars never violated The Message. It has always showed the triumph of diversity and even sensitivity. It didn't have to be sacrificed to make a point. The existence of a That Star Wars Girl proves that the series was good enough for girls as it was, it's universal success that it was already made for everybody.

The clones never really did have personalities in the movies though. That was the whole reason Order 66 didn't send off any alarm bells for the group of trained empaths until they started dying in mass. Because the clones were just following orders. As for why they are butchering Star Wars? Sheer contempt towards anything not made by them, and a utter disdain towards the past. If they can't have the spotlight, no one will.

@@fictiontheorizer1991Thanks for reading my long comment. It's awesome to be heard! Ah that is a problem then if the clones don't have an understanding of emotions like respect. Honestly though clone lore was just poorly thought out. I'd change it completely. My idea for the clones would be that they were a separatist project. The separatists would want a force of thinking automatons after what to happened to their drones on Naboo. Palpatine, knowing about this CIS project, could then seize the clones to save the jedi. What a coup for Palpatine. He not only appears to save the jedi (who the senate did nothing to help) but stole a CIS army in order to do it (an army the senate did nothing to deal with). Then in later movies Palpatine would use the questionable ethics of using only human clones to rally to his Empire all of the human minorities on all of the republic planets. Since humans have no home planet for protection it could be easy to convince them that they've been systemically abused. But they do seem to have a large presence on most planets so if Palpatine did concentrate them into the Imperial Army they'd outnumber species like the Wookies, Mon Cal and others who have less affinity for leaving their home planet and less reason to serve in expeditionary armies. I can empathize with those writers wanting to tell their own stories. I've been doing that for years BECAUSE of them. Thanks again.

I'd say most of the new stuff is below comic book level. I actually liked a lot of the post-2014 Star Wars comics more than any of the sequels. They actually gave the legacy chracters some depth. The Leia comic showed she was a loyal diplomat who wasn't afraid to get her hands dirty, and would do anything for her people. Vader in his own series and Dr Aphra showed his obsession with finding Luke after ANH, and hinted at a desire to subvert Palpatine. I don't understand why they can't make shows from some of this stuff, they'd actually be better.

The troopers were let out in the middle of absolutely no where to look for a dude who is somewhere on the planet. So much of this series makes absolutely no sense. Mandalorian gave me faith that Disney wrested control of LucasFilm from Kennedy and unofficially gave it to Jon Favreau. But when you see the absolute lack of quality in Boba and now Obi-Wan, I can only guess Kennedy's back in charge.

About Obi-Wan Kenobi, it's obvious that the show is Kathleen kennedy's attempt to erase Dave Filoni legacy, eg. Reva killing the Grand Inquisitor. In Filoni's Star Wars Rebels, Obi-Wan easily defeated Darth Maul. That fight scene makes sense because if Obi-Wan was to protect Luke (The One) then it would make sense for him to always be prepared. If you are familiar with Filoni Star Wars shows, you'll see that Kennedy's Obi-Wan mini series completely veered off from the canon Filoni's already established.

25:42 this was actually very well explained in the former canon books ”Darth Bane”. Force users create a force shield around them to protect them from other force users. Only when one looses concentration, or when an adversary is incredibly strong in the force, can that ”shield” be broken. The first case happens when Obi fights Darth Maul and is thrown back by the force, he had lost his focus because of Qui-Gon's defeat, and the latter happens with Dooku, who is much stronger than Obi, but weaker that Anakin.

I don't understand, how does Reva know about Leia? It was literally summed up in a vague line where she says "I found a link in the archives between Kenobi and Organa." Really? How come Vader wouldn't have realised this? You'd think he'd be desperately searching for any leads and would have access to the best intelligence the empire had. Did he just overlook this link? And why would Organa even ask Kenobi? Does he not realise Kenobi is a very wanted man and him being involved could definitely make things worse? They really don't care.

  • @whiskeyhound

The link between Kenobi and Organa is probably gonna be that they both knew Amidala, so Vader would know about that and it really wouldn't make any sense to kidnap Leia on the off chance that Organa just happened to still be in contact with some guy he met 10 years ago. Organa getting Kenobi involved is even dumber than just asking him, he radios him and then travels from his planet directly to a random cave on Tattooine that Kenobi's living in, surely nobody would ever find that suspicious.

It’s fair to say that you should wait for a show to end to judge it as it a whole, or to criticize a character’s arc. But if the character sucks, it sucks. We didn’t need to wait for the end of RotJ and Vader’s redemption to say Vader was a good character. He was a great villain from the first scene. Reva is a horrible villain. Doesn’t matter where the story takes her. In these three episodes, she has been a blight. When writing an arc, you have to be very careful about where you start the character. They have to be appreciated for who they are and what they bring to the story from the get-go, even if that dynamic changes as the story progresses. If you’re going to have a character start off as a criminal and gradually become a “good” guy, you can’t have them do anything unforgivable. They can’t cross the line. As Mauler said in a previous episode, had Vader survived, he would have had to account for everything he’d done. I don’t know that his fate would have been death, considering he was ultimately (and literally) responsible for overthrowing the Emperor, which was demonstrable repentance, but there would still be accountability. (This makes me glad he didn’t survive, because that would have just been an ugly affair any which way you look at it.) So if you want a really nasty bit of business to do something selfless and magnanimous at the end of their life, that’s one thing. But if you want to transform a character an have them go forward with a new life, they can’t be absolute turd muffins, or have some kind of warped ideology that they carry with them. But we know Disney does’t understand morality, and they haven’t hired competent writers who understand that sort of thing. Wanda Vision made it clear that they have no understanding of right and wrong, or accountability. They don’t distinguish between fantasy and reality. Reva, Leia and Kenobi have been insufferable for these three episodes. They didn’t need to be. To quote Han Solo, “No reward is worth this”.

To use (and given admittedly a far longer arc) an example: Londo Mollari from Babylon 5, a character can go full villain, but it was shown that he was well-intentioned but misguided and prideful, yet initially 'good' beforehand, making his attempted reversal still sympathetic, despite initiating genocide... That, is how to develop a character. Even a dream premonition inadvertantly turning a character "bad" (e.g. Vader) can be done well (witness Lorgar and Magnus from 30k, hell even Horus & Curze still comes across as sympathetic...) The problem with Vader is that Revenge of the Sith was shit, badly- written appalling dialogue that weakened his character and premise, and has only become worse since. This was the chance to make him a powerful, smart, dominating character; instead of a whiny emo dickless amputee in a robot suit. They needed to play UP the fear factor among his own side, not among the populace. That may yet happen, but based on what's happened in the past 20 years, very little hope of them understanding that. Intimidation comes from competence, not from thrashing weaklings. Vader is a commander, not a petty bully by A New Hope.

Kenobi bot 9s and 10s just passed 800 out of 980 total on Metacritic. The bots just using basic grammatical rewording to say the same four basic things, over and over. It is glorious in how fake it looks, and how desperate they are to pretend their show is good. The most obvious are when they needed a 5 / 10 to maintain the overall score of 8.0 - 8.1 and just used the same basic text "The show is perfect. Vader/Sheva are terrifying. Fills in the gap, and makes you wonder what will happen next with great acting. 5 / 10". I am not kidding. They claim it is the best show ever and then toss a 5 on it. Though it seems they are only posting one text review for every tenth score that they give it, and have started adding new phrases like "lots of references", "ties to canon and legacy". So Disney is really trying to sell these as real, regardless of how easy they are to spot (all Day zero accounts with a single review as well - which you cannot check on RT).

When they brought Hayden & Ewan back, I naively thought they would make something of quality, that was a deep character study. Nope. Here’s the thing, it was dumb, but I thought the hacks at Disney Lucasfilm, might find some “imagination” or “creativity”. I know, these are qualities Disney Lucasfilm just don’t possess. Here’s some examples, of how they could’ve used Hayden & Ewan to tell some deeper and more interesting stories, that it seems they had no interest in doing. Dream Sequences. If you want Obi’s conscious to be tortured, that could be represented by Hayden as Anakin. They could have “conversations of substance”, that give us even greater insight into, get this, Obi-Wan’s “character”. Give Hayden a chance to redeem himself as an actor. Have Obi having a constant rematch, night after night with Hayden’s Anakin, since that’s how Obi would still see him in his mind’s eye. Heck have Obi dream of a different future where Anakin is raising Luke & Leia and he’s visiting them as Uncle Obi, had things gone differently. Written correctly, that could be absolutely heartbreaking. Waking Dreams Have Obi see Hayden’s Anakin while awake, they did this once & so far, with only 2 episodes left have done nothing else with it! They could’ve use this a bunch, perhaps have Obi wonder if he’s losing his mind from guilt or regret or maybe his subconscious or the Force is trying to tell him something? If you ever saw the show “Hannibal”, look at all the creative ways they used surrealism through the characters dreams and waking hallucinations, to tell deeper parts of the story, using the characters subconscious. Flashbacks They could do a few live action “Clone Wars” era scenes, with a little de-aging, instead Ep3 flashbacks, to tell us something about the character and have the theme of the flashback, work into the theme of that episode as a parallel or juxtaposition. Perhaps one with Anakin and a live action Ashoka, where Obi’s seeing Anakin be a mentor, like he was trying to be? A little creativity could go a long way. In order to do this. 1. You’d have to want the Series to be about Obi-Wan, instead of Leia & Reva. 2. The writer would have to care about Obi’s and Anakin’s relationship and make that the heart of the story. I think we all know, there’s NO WAY in HELL, Disney Lucasfilm would ever make a show around 2 White Male characters, even if that’s what they should have done, once they brought Ewan & Hayden back.

41:25 I honestly would have loved it if vader departed from his typical stoic and calm approach and while he was fighting Kenobi at the end of episode 3 just release all of his pent up rage in a massive rant about. Just everything about how "I was your friend and you left me to die" and "its your fault im mechanical monster" because this is the guy who made vader the big badass emotionally damaged and scorched badass he is. More than that kenobi was his master, his friend, his brother in a way and instead of saving him and brining him back to padames ship to at least try and turn him back to light or at least putting him out of his misery he leaves him to die a slow and painful death. I'm just saying there would be a lot of pent up rage and I'm not sure if even vader would keep his cool.

Regarding force users force choking each other, Dukoo does it in Episode III to Kenobi and incapacitates him. Also, Darth Maul force pushes Kenobi twice. The EU explanation in Darth Bane and other stories is that Jedi and Sith can put up protective force shields that prevent each other from using the force on each other. However, if you are strong enough or can break your opponent's concentration, you can rip through their force shield and affect them.
