Happiest of Holidays

We are sending the Christmas greeting from home this year. It includes a couple of events here that filled us with the spirit of the season. Jennifer accompanied friends with three generations on a ride on the Polar Express. It was the perfect way to incorporate all of our favorite holiday traditions like caroling, cookies and cocoa, bedtime stories and a visit with Santa. We got to experience Christmas through the eyes of children. And then we visited a dear friend who celebrated her 95th birthday on Christmas Eve and received the gift of music as her grandson sang her favorite song at her bedside. We wanted to share our home with you, so we did a short segment here and then we recapped our year in pictures with our favorite people. We were so happy to reconnect with old friends, meet new people we hope we'll see again, and share these amazing places around the world that have brought us all together. We send out a message of peace and unity in a time when our world needs us to stick together and remain committed to the best of humanity. Season's Greetings, with love from Jonathan and Jennifer

Jenn was pretty fortunate to be invited. It's totally her kind of a thing! Not sure the two year olds will even remember it, but the 6 year old thought it was pretty amazing!!

It has been nice to be home, and fun to celebrate an American holiday, but my guess is we’ll be back on the road next year.

What a touching tribute to your year. I had to dry a tear at the birthday. How wonderful and the song, well it was heavenly. Thank you for your kindness, sharing, reaching out to the people you met both in person and via the medium of KZread. I'm grateful for your generosity. It has been one of my year's highlights being able to travel with you and hear your stories. May 2024 bring you all the blessings 🙏you need and deserve for you and your family. Thank you both. 🩷🇳🇱🧑‍🎄🇳🇿🌟🎄

Anita, what a beautiful and thoughtful comment. The birthday was a very special highlight. We asked if having a birthday on Christmas Eve was problematic and she immediately responded that it was never a problem, in fact, it was more fun because there was always lots of family around, so she felt like she always had more visitors than most people got on their birthdays. I think she’s got a secret there as to how to successfully make it to 95! The other part of her story that I love is that she lives with her daughter Jody so that she can remain at home with her window view, homemade food and visitors whenever she wants them. It’s been both a burden and a blessing for them both, but while it’s working, it’s a beautiful thing to see. We hope you’ve had a lovely holiday of your own and are looking forward to another year of adventures.

@@welltravelledlife that is so special. I have a bonus mother in law. My husband’s first wife’s mother. They always kept in touch after Irene died and when I came along, after a short painful ( for both) period of getting to know each other we are now as close as can be. Ma is 93 and had a brain haemorrhage in 2022 while I was visiting my children in NZ and Australia. I was at wits end. What to do? Go back- stay with my children? The upshot is she survived though from one day to the next lost her independence. For 20 years now we’ve been close and I now travel (30 minute drive) to her every 4-5 days do her washing, run errands if she needs anything and generally try to support her in every way. She does have a son and he is also very caring, though lives further away and isn’t in a position to ’drop and run’ like I can. It’s amazing how the bond can grow to be so strong between people. Ma has become a special person in my life and I wouldn’t have it any other way. How marvellous your sister in law can give her mum the care and love she needs in her last years. I bet you are all grateful and thankful that this lovely vibrant and elderly lady is so loved and well taken care of. Precious. 🙏💖

@@IamaDutch-Kiwi What a beautiful story. And what a testament to the desire to connect that we innately have. Regardless of her allegiance to her daughter, she found in you someone worthy of her son in law, and with whom she too could become close. I might also add that there is no greater honor you could bestow upon your husband's first wife than to care so deeply and consistently for her mother. This says so much about you and so much about the family you've created.
