I bought the Karoo2 together with the Garmin 1030+ almost exactly a year ago. I sent the Garmin back after a week. The reasons were: -The crazy convoluted menu with options that I will never ever use for myself. -The ClimbPro obscured the route guidance, further up the hill, although I should have turned off before. -Re-routing despite advertising still with "Please turn" in the continuous loop. -The display on my model was extremely hard to read, the automatic brightness control either far too bright or far too dark. -When routing on a circuit, I was constantly routed in the direction of home, although the outward lap had not even been completed. With the Karoo2, I personally find the display superb, very bright and easy to read in every situation. Re-routing is sensationally good, even when the road was closed for work in a tunnel and there were a huge diversions, the Karoo2 guided me more than 4 kilometres to the right place, further ahead on the route with clearly understandable instructions. The battery life is more than sufficient for me, my tours are 50-90 kilometres long, so it's more likely that my butt will hurt than that I'll have problems with the battery. For me, it's a clear decision, especially since a year ago, the price difference between Garmin and Karoo2 was at least 150 euros. Earlier on I have used the Wahoo Roam but the small display and the confusing map design forced me more than once to check google Maps on the Smartphone to take the right turn.

Thanks! Great assessment. Y, way too many deficiencies for the price. My Garmin 520+ has been bombproof, and I totally agree about being too small for touchscreen.

I had the original Karoo and got the Karoo 2 very early on. The battery life of the Karoo 2 just wasn’t good enough (7-8 hours), even compared to the original. Really nice screen, maps and navigation. Plenty of features and constant upgrades, but these also came with new bugs and I had issues with sensor dropouts after some updates. Just too glitchy. I sent it back and got a Garmin 830. Muuuuch better battery life and no issues with sensors or random glitches. Not perfect, but a more reliable unit for a lower price.

Good discussion of an interesting device. Not on par with Garmin imo.. but very promising!

It is always searching for Sensor and it eats up the Battery even plugged in. My Wahoo is Plugged in but it doesn't keep searching for Sensor

Premium? You cant even take it traveling, there are many countries including Japan here I am that it doesn't work in.

It’s works well in countries that allow for bike routing. Just circled Ireland with it. In Japan only vehicle and walk routing works on any headunit device and for that matter Google maps on your cell phone. It’s not a hammerhead specific problem.

If it's already android why aren't they just using google maps? Google already has all the most accurate maps, there is no bike computer company that even covers every country, and google rerouting is basically perfect. Also I have never had google maps crash, my wahoo on the other hand crashes more often that it works. It don't get all this inventing of square wheels when perfectly round ones are there to use.

Pretty simple, because google maps doesn’t recognize/„know“ most bike ways, trails etc. At least in Europe that is. Sure, if you only want to get the fastest possible route and don’t mind heavy traffic on highways or other main streets, go ahead and use google maps - it’s perfect for that. But otherwise, pretty much any other cycling gps using OSM or similar is far superior.

Welllll it's a bit of an oversimplification to expect all Google services to come in the box with Android. They're still very separate parts of a large company. Google services also cost money. The company I work for runs a mapping platform and it costs us money every time someone uses the address search. I'd expect the bike GPS market to be way too small to sustain that kind of integration.

I think you'll find the maps are Google maps in in the background and hammerhead pays for them as a service. Edit: atleawt for road data sets

I even would not buy it for 200 bugs. Such a disapointment. A fail in connectivity, a fail in running time, a fail in mounting system, no innovative features, and all this for such a price!

Ok, this is a weird one. Here's my rough hierarchy: I'd take the Karoo 2 over the Edge 1030 Plus because it does a lot of what the Garmin does but for $200 less, I'd take the Bolt V2 over the Roam because it has the same or slightly better features for less money, I'd take the Karoo 2 over the Edge 830 because the screen is so much better and the price is similar, and I'd take the Karoo 2 over the Roam because I like the screen a lot and the Roam is only slightly less money. I see the Karoo 2 and Bolt V2 as too far apart for cost and features to really be comparable. The absolute best value GPS units that I think are best for most people are still the mid range Edge 530 and Elemnt Bolt V2. Hope that makes sense!

@@JustRideAdelaide essentially, the Karoo 2 has the edge over the bolt v2, but only worth considering if you have the money to spend?
