Hammerhead Karoo Cycling GPS Predictive Path Technology // NEW Free-Ride CLIMBER Feature

Спорт

Hammerhead, makers of the Karoo and Karoo 2 cycling GPS, have launched their CLIMBER Predictive Path Technology. This adds an all new level of 'look ahead' detail while free riding never seen before on any cycling GPS unit to date. This is without a doubt a game-changer for CLIMBER that places the Karoo units well ahead of the competition for this feature.

Should be noted that predictive climb seems to only work if the base map includes a marked trail. I've done several gravel rides where climbs have not been detected, the difference being no 'dotted' trail line, ie 'off-piste' random gravel riding could be hit or miss.

The estimate metres remaining makes sense to me if you think in terms of altitude from where you are to the endpoint, when you go downhill you then have more elevation still to climb to get to the end. Hopefully Garmin can add an equivalent function.

I'm not entirely sure that battery life is a huge issue. I routinely get about an 8% battery "decay" per hour... so the battery life will equate to 9-11 hours, even though I have PM/Cadence sensosr (three different brands on three different bikes), Di2, Varia, HRM, and Spd/Distance sensors on almost every ride. Not often I ride 9-11 hours, and I suspect I'm not unique in that. As pointed out, battery life can be elongated by using "Battery Save" mode, which I quite often do to break my habit of looking at my head unit and not the road. I suspect that Karoo's battery life has become more of an issue because it is displayed quite prominently on the screen and that people (like me) start to panic when it goes down. I really think it would be unusual to run a fully charge Karoo to zero. I will note that I also quite often don't charge the Karoo between shorter rides, but I do try to make sure I have a full charge for long rides.

I’ve abandoned the Garmin ship and ordered one of these. My friends swear by it. On the Garmin it underrated my elevation by 30-40% per ride, I have to correct via Strava base map. As a new Road cyclist. I am new to these cycle computers. Bought what I thought was the best (garmin 1040) but I don’t get the hype. It’s like using a 12 year old smart phone with a crap screen. I mean I don’t remember the last time I could visibly see pixels in a device that costs me 600. Shocking. I was going to get the Karoo 2 but since I watched your video on them dropping di2 support I decided against it. Still considering selling the 1040 and just going for the Karoo. If you premade the route, you might as well remember most of it, including the climb. This new climber feature will help you to pace the effort better, even in unknown terrain. So what's the main nickles left regarding the Karoo 2? I know their data base is not the most accurate. I hope they fix that and I can finally motivate myself to invest those 400€ for the device.

Since day one? That's a stretch. Even now I find it somewhat embarrassing they don't support what I'd consider basic core functionality like recording Di2/eTap/etc data to the FIT file, BLE data connectivity (who tf wants to buy another SIM card!?), extended sensor support, and a web dashboard that's from your quoted 2005 era. Garmin wipes the floor with everyone for depth of features and eco-system. They have their own developer platform anyone can use. Also InReach. Wahoo has mopped up pissed off Garmin owners with a simple interface/setup/user experience. Hammerhead are doing good things...but they have ground to make up to be on-par with the others. Climber is a clear winner for them. They need to keep moving forward.
