Halifax Nova Scotia has Changed! Canada's Crazy Cost of Living in 2023 🇨🇦

We're back in our home city of Halifax! In this video we're talking about how Halifax has changed since the last time we were here (a year ago). We make our way though downtown Halifax and talk about all sorts of things that have changed (or not), from cost of living/prices to infrastructure to transit and community. We also talk about health care, the weather and our favourite topic, the food!
As we visit the city for a couple of days we also give you a tour of the amazing hotel we're staying The Prince George (one of our favourite hotels in downtown Halifax). We also eat at their restaurant Gio, which has some of the best upscale food in the city.

I’ve lived in Halifax for over 20 years now and 5 years ago I would have told anyone to move here, such a great place to live. These days I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. We are overpopulated with no changes to infrastructure, traffic is insane with more accidents happening constantly. 160,000 on the wait list for a family dr, lowest wages and highest taxes, and yes, our transit system is awful. Our rent costs are almost on par with Toronto and Vancouver. The locals can’t afford it. 😢 I used to love going downtown but now I avoid it at all costs. Too much construction, noise, parking is difficult, it’s stressful and annoying. I miss the way Halifax used to be. It really was an East coast gem.

Well... I've lived in Halifax for 55 years.... and it hasn't really changed... for what you are talking about. The only thing that rings true is the lack of accessible doctors. Overpopulated... bah... it has always been a port city, and the population fluctuates. Not sure what you mean by no changes to infrastructure... a lot has been improved and expanded over the decades. Traffic?...... It actually flows smoother now, than in the 60's, 70's, and 80's... there might be more accidents, but there are a lot more drivers. (and I mean A LOT more). If you think that the transit system is bad, you obviously never had to use the yellow Electric Trollybuses.😁 Yes... Halifax should have an underground or metro system.... but no one is going to try to drill through Granite and Dolomite, so that is never going to happen. They keep revamping the routes and making it easier to use, so it isn't really that bad, and works well for thousands of people... every day. As for rents and housing.... Halifax has never been a cheap city to live in. Covid pricing has made things worse, but people and groups have been trying different initiatives to address these things over the years... it all just takes time. One of the best changes was when the city allowed High Density housing and Low Density commercial to be combined... meaning an apartment building with commercial space on the lower one or two floors... for shops, small business, and offices. This makes the city more walkable, when going for amenities in your neighbourhood. I rarely Have To go downtown, except maybe for meeting people and going to events. I never found parking bad, if you didn't mind walking 15 minutes to your event. There are lots of 'hidden' parking locales... if you really know the city.😊 So... still an East Coast Gem.... if just a 'little' busier than before. Cheers!

@@dougwilson4537 Halifax has never been a cheap city to live in? Every apartment I’ve had up until 3 years ago has been less than $800 per month, including a townhouse. The same places now are double and triple that amount. You sound like someone who lives quite comfortably in their own home with a dual income. Good for you though. Must be nice to be so privileged.

@@janavanbeelen8489 A swing and a miss, on your rant. I’ve never earned over $35,000 a year, in my life…. And that was almost 30 years ago. I only cleared $28K last year. And if you were thinking that $800/month was cheap, you must be earning well. I bought my first house just before Covid, for my retirement, and it is about 200Km outside of Halifax… where I could afford it. So… Sorry… not dual income, and not privileged…. and I stand by my original post. I’m sorry you felt you had to give a toxic reply to what I feel is an honest assessment of Halifax.

Why do people say that Canada has "great healthcare" even though you can't actually see a doctor? The healthcare in Canada is horrible. What we have is access to a waiting list, not access to healthcare. Every time I travel I am blown away by how much cheaper and more accessible healthcare is almost everywhere in the developed world. I live in Toronto and when I called my family doctor to book an appointment (that was in July), the closest time slot they had was in January. At this point I am either going to get better on my own or die from whatever ails me. How is that "great healthcare"? It's the same story all over the country.

Welcome home! Nice to hear your perspective after a year...as things have changed. But despite the rise in the cost of living, and healthcare challenges, I think Nova Scotia is still a pretty decent place to call home in Canada. Love to see the city of Halifax growing and still just a few minutes out from the center, one can find perfect little areas of peace and quiet. The weather has been, well horrible, especially with the recent rains and flooding, which was particularly heartbreaking in my neighbourhood. Off so soon? Continue the amazing adventure and will look forward to seeing where it takes you! Bruce and Otis

Also have stayed at The Westin, Holiday Inn up on hill past The Citadel, The Waverly Inn etc (stayed in the Oscar Wilde room). Used to eat at The Five Fisherman many times plus other places (Salty Dog) etc. Fish Market on the Harbor with beer. Ferry ride to Dartmouth is cool. Saturdays on the waterfront is cool - bought my wife earrings there that the artist made from copper from one of the downtown building roofs refurbishing. I hope to get back to Halifax - if not move there! Thanks!

Very interesting video. Happy belated Trevor. Born in Halifax, always spent summers in the region and lived there for years each on a few occasions. Great folks, and an amiable populous by and large, totally agree. Summers are magical, but that is a social reconnection thing partially. Looking from a distance, and when I visit, less convinced it's a city still worth the adptations and the cost of living there......and this is unsettling. It's in the Ottawa, Calgary, Victoria, urban Vancouver, unban GTA price category now. Infrastructure, entertainment, major sports, travel connectivity wise....it's not in that league, as appealing as it is otherwise. Amenity to cost ratio....it's challenged. The mass transit system is just fair, never was very good and for decades not administrated, nor planned by people who actually have to use it.....couldn't be so stymied otherwise. The geology and topography would make any LRT scheme budget untenable, not enough population to begin to pay for it. The traffic has increased, but it flows okay outside of the downtown...there are a lot of dawdling indecisive drivers though. The core issue is a desperate lack of parking in the city, HFX Transit's park n ride options currently no efficient alternative....especially in nasty weather. Wage parity, and employment opportunity has never been a strong suit....the amount of former residents doing well in grateful competing economies points to that. People who did manage at the regional level of remuneration, can no longer afford to retire or live there. The cost of housing, outside developer impositions, reno-victions and rental crush are unbounded by any political will to strategize relief. Tent cities....are a distress beacon...just sayin' ! I love it, but it nears a crisis of dysfunction....as many communities do....didn't mean to rant.

I actually find the bus system pretty decent. I visit family there often and take the bus from airport to downtown, then just buy ticket book and ride around town (or walk) easily. I agree tap system would be good and I don’t use bus as a commuter but by kid fund’s it ok (around central Halifax).

The cost of rent and homes is greatly affected by supply and demand, over 200 thousand people have moved here over the last 2 years. we need a massive amount of housing built to help drop the price and the government has to invest in affordable housing. In the 80's people bought mobile homes and semi's as starter homes, not 500 + dollar homes. Things have to change. and yah transit needs upgrades if they want people to use it more.

For years, Halifax sort of plodded along like it always did. The population always grew a little bit, but since 2017/2018 perceptions have changed about Atlantic Canada and Nova Scotia in particular. Part of the problem is that Halifax now has over 500,000 people but we are still driving and commuting with infrastructure that supports a city of 350,000 people. Part of the challenges of a growing city is that yes, things get expensive when people want to live here. Having lived in Nova Scotia for 37 years, I would much rather deal with the challenges of growth than the challenges of decline. Bring it on. These are teething problems that can be solved.

If residents of Halifax are feeling pain of the increasing high cost of living, imagine how it is like for us here in Toronto. Not only is everything skyrocketed high in Toronto but the quality of life has deteriorated drastically after the pandemic. Crime rate has gone up. I don’t even feel safe, taking the subway in Toronto anymore. The cost of housing and rental in Toronto is the highest. Even higher than Ottawa. At least in Saskatchewan the cost of housing is lower.

The doctor shortage is bad now.. but ask yourself, how old is your doctor? There are way more older doctors nearing retirement than there are young doctors. The young doctors all moved to America for better paychecks. Canada is about to go from critical shortage to "omg the house is on fire" shortage in the next few years. And anyone who says "privatization" is the key... where will the doctors for the private sector come from? Oh, that's right, they'll come from the already short public sector, thus leaving the public system a hollowed out dysfunctional shell (it almost already is). The solution: Train more doctors and pay them better so more of them stay and don't leave for the States. Write specific tax breaks into the tax law so that doctors are taxed less. This is how you attract and keep talent.

I live in downtown Halifax, I like the City a lot, BUT... rent is out of control, $2000 for a 1 bedroom is crazy. I have a friend that pays $900 a month just for a room in someone's house, the going rate, again, crazy. I realize this is a Canada problem, it's similar all over the country, but that doesn't make it any better. The problem, our government are criminals - they don't work for us, they are screwing us all. They knew what would happen when they took in so many immigrants too soon, supply and demand, and now the big apartment companies are making a killing off of it. Then a carbon tax on top of everything else, this in a country that is essentially a massive forest. Meanwhile, tent cities are growing here and all over the country and this is just the beginning. Our government has sent 18 billion dollars to the Ukraine and wasted countless billions in other ways while Canadians are sleeping in tents from coast to coast, and most Canadians are struggling to pay the bills. Time to wake up Canada.

Your statement on health care ,although somewhat true, are misleading since you never mentioned all of the changes that have been made so people can get access to care. I shouldn’t be surprised by your comments since you have been away for a year or so. Also, your comments on the restaurant are with bias since you were staying there for free.
