I am interested in knowing the living expenses of other provinces . Perhaps food costs could have been added to this be added to this comparison?As well it would be good to show an entire year having gone through four seasons.How about car gas prices per litre? My wife and I have recently been in Ithaca New York as well as Florida. The food costs are the same or greater in the USA compared to Canada. Labour costs for car repairs in the USA were 30-50 % more in the USA compared to Canada. Fast food costs more in the USA compared to Canada. Fast food portions were smaller in the USA RS. Canada

Yeah I’m living that reality, the cost of living in the US is not cheaper than Canada. The only benefit is that taxes are often lower.

Strange. My insurance for a 2019 Ram and enclosed tool trailer in Ontario was $90/mo. Here in NS, just the truck alone is $140/mo, which I believe is bundled with home insurance. Methinks I need to shop around.

A year later, and things have only deteriorated further. Having lived in Vancouver/southern BC coast most of my life, I chose to move first to PEI, and then settled in NS three years ago. My impression of the Maritimes? I happily moved back to BC. It later emerged that I was just one of legions of others who were lured to the Atlantic on the promise of accessible real estate, but found that the overall price for that access was far too exorbitant in every sense of the word. In terms of negative life experiences, it ranks as a clear number one. I had lived in small northern communities in the past, and assumed that life in the Maritimes wouldn’t be too dissimilar. I couldn’t have been more mistaken.

Enjoyed this insight very much. Just returned to ON after visiting family in the East and it is definitely on the radar for after Christmas to move.

Good day from Kit-Waterloo ONt. Yes former boss said taxes is rent. I live on rural area 1/2 acre lot & I pay 3600/yr = 300/mth. Thanks. But people want bigger fanicer homes so they can pay more taxes & complain.

How you can compare apples to oranges? If you will compare owning a house in Ontario to owning a house in NS you'll see a much higher difference. In addition, it depends on what size of the house you have, if you rented in Ontario 500 sqft apartment and now you own a house in NS 1500sqft, how you can compare it?

Agreed, that would be more accurate but we couldn’t afford to own in ON. Also our rented house size in ON and our current home are almost identical. But one was rural and the other suburban.

I'm from southern Ontario as well and thinking of retiring in NS. Are you happy you made the move from Ontario to NS? I know there's definite differences but Ontario has changed so much and not for the better, to stay here in the Niagara region doesn't thrill me anymore.

I would never move back to Ontario again, it’s all personal preference but getting away from places like suburban southern ON (so long as you have work or something to retire on) makes perfect sense.

I think you framing GTA to Pictou County NS is not an accurate comparison. I moved from Vancouver BC to Halifax and it feels I am paying A LOT more in Halifax as compared to Vancouver (considering- higher wages, lower taxes, transportation, quality of rental units, the amenities, big city value added benefits, etc...). The transportations system here needs mega improvements, rent is crazy high, and tax is highest in the country. I am not sure we are experiencing the same benefits at all. And the car buying process is much more complicated and the inventory is all rusted underneath.... People are much nicer though! That's a win I guess... :)

Groceries are more expensive out here so the garden probably didn’t even offset the increased cost of food. Gas out here is maybe a touch more expensive than ON but we travel less than we did in the city. We need to plan our trips rather than just driving out to the store whenever we need something.

Ya we stock up for 3-4 weeks as our main shopping is an hr away. Smaller stores are quite expensive here. We can get our gas a bit cheaper (still too expensive) as we have native reservations that sell it for a better price than most stations. You must need a bigger garden! We saved like mad on groceries by just eating from the garden. We buy our meat from local farmers so barely needed groceries but for hygiene products.

U said car insurance in Schoosh is under $400 per year. Is that correct? Seems really low.

Yeah I forgot to mention that in both Ontario and Nova Scotia I’ve only got 3rd party coverage on my auto insurance. We have an older vehicle.

Heres what I paid to Cape Breton, Sydney to be exact..when I bought the house in 2021 the taxes were capped at 2000 a year....after I bought the house it was reassessed....so it went from 2000 to almost 10,000 a year...I appealed it but lost..after I lost the appeal I sold and moved back home....but more food for thought..furnace oil from nov-march was average 1000 a month at 17 degrees....hydro was over 200 a month...."single guy no kids"..water bill was 30 a month...my car insurance in Ontario was 1200...nova Scotia 1600.. cheapest I could find with a clean record...but remember you also have to factor in no health care at all...food was easy 20-30 percent more...income taxes are 10 percent maybe more over Ontario...just some more things to think about before you move as I thought I would try my dream and move.....but it was a total disaster.

2:54 You can't compare renter's insurance to homeowner's insurance. Homeowner's insurance in Ontario may well have been higher than in NS

I think normalizing based on sq ft or sq m is needed. Also are these C$ or US$?

It's very hard to find housing here. We have a low vacancy rate and prices have gotten high.

Nova Scotia Is beautiful. Lived here all my life and anyone who wants to move here to contribute to the economy then most welcome with open arms. However just a few things to add and not try and be too negative. However my points are valid. 1) Average age is OLD, its still a retirement province dont expect a Toronto lifestyle 2) Good luck finding a doctor, wait lists are over a year. 3) If you are rural/country, in the winter don't expect your road to be plowed for days. 4) Wages are low. Very low and employers here would rather shut down than pay you more 5) The local and provincial governments will tax the taxed taxed.. nickel and dimed 24/7 6) If you are buying rural/farm/large property it most likely has an ATV trail that's older than you on it... work with the local ATV clubs to manage it or be prepared to make enemies, there are over 60,000 registered off highway vehicles running around this small province and growing. If managed correctly with club enforcement, you won't have an issue. 7) Buy good quality tires and shocks for your vehicle, our roads *might* get repaired some year 8) Properties and taxes are still somewhat manageable ..now.. Many folk moving here from Central or western Canada and paying basically 10 to 20% over already inflated asking price in a bidding war has driven up the cost of everything from houses to wood land. What used to cost $1500/per acre pre 2019 out my neck of the woods is now a stupid $10,000 plus per acre for untouched wood land. A few more nit picky things, but id still not Change where i live.

Yeah it’s like there are special taxes to live in the province but it’s still worth it!

Don't get me started lol. Before the pandemic the reason boiled down to .... Canadians will pay it. We had a culture of paying a bit more so that people could earn fair wages but that mentality is now exploited, it started with the cell phone companies. There is really no justification for it beyond greed. There was study done on it some years ago in relation to the cost of cell phones or internet which you can pretty much apply to everything else that basically boiled down to that Canadians feel they have to pay it and that mentality of wanting people to get a fair wage. But ARE NOT being paid fair wages, it is now just stockholders lining their pockets at the cost of our economy and well being. Now the big issues for Nova Scotians is grocery costs and the cost of purchasing a home and renting. So many moved here during the pandemic that people were able to name their price due to housing shortages and landlords began exploiting the situation charging sometimes double for rent. We are now in a crisis situation with regard to housing. The average Nova Scotian can not afford rent even in rural areas. It is ridiculous. The only way they are getting away with this gouging is due to the housing shortage. Nova Scotians do not make on average what people do in Ontario or BC yet we are paying the same amount now in rent even in rural areas where rent should be dirt cheap. These landlords are driving a situation that is going to cause a lot of homeless people and once we go down that road, it is hard to get back because it is hard to count the housing required when you have people compensating by moving in together or in some places living out of their cars or tents. Nova Scotians who want to move, can't. I am stuck in place I do not want to be that was supposed to be a temporary cheap place until I got on my feet a bit better. With the cost of living increases it has been very hard to achieve anything and I am essentially trapped here now due to the housing crisis or bite the bullet and pay twice what an apartment is worth.

And how does Canada compare to the UK for cost of living?

When we moved here back in 2011 it was more adorable than our situation in the UK. But over time it’s gotten much worse, but saying that, so has the UK. Cost of living is probably on par tor most western nations I would think.

I wish I could bring water into a hotel but it's just not permitted through security. Also I did perform a lengthy search online for the best hotel rates near the airport. But boy did I mess up on the monthly totals for car insurance!? In my notes I added the monthly amount for both car and home insurance together and I didn't spot that I separated them on the graphics but gave the combined total in the video. So thank you for pointing out my error!

Dude, you should do this math in Austria or any other "1st class country in Europe"... I am moving to Cape Breton this year - we could never ever afford to purchase any acres for self sufficiency in Austria - prices for 2,5acres are up to 50k euros.... we catched a property in eastern cape breton 200acres tall for a price we could get 4 acres in Austria.... Even the taxes are a multiple of Canada.. we pay up to 51% of taxes on your income! 20% vat, up to 50cent for one kWh hydro and so on... Europe will fail soon... all the best to you and thanks for your great content!

Grew up in Nova Scotia. Beautiful. The cost of living crisis is completely liberal driven. People made a mistake when the wanted government help. The government size has gown out of control. We have to pay for it all. Keep voting liberal and social programs for all. Just keep doing the same thing and expecting a different result. That will work. And nice video
