Half Track Garden Tractor Build with a John Deere 317 Homemade OTT

#halftrack #homemadetrackedvehicle #johndeere
In this video I turn a John Deere 317 Garden tractor with a Kohler KT177 Series II into a half track garden tractor. I build OTT (Over the Tire) tracks using steel chains, and steel.

    Glad I came across your channel from a referral from a friend! I got a 1978 JD 316 with a K341 engine. Big thumper. Just changed the hydrostatic fluid in the ol' girl again last year. Still running strong from good maintenance!

    I used to do a lot of work at lower levels usually waist high or lower and after receiving severe damage to my back and one knee I learned that all too important lesson about working on the ground in my case aggravating my back damage however... in your case if you continue working like that it most likely will eventually lead to similar problems. I was just hoping you would heed a lesson learned the hard way. Plus working at or slightly above waist level when welding will lead to better quality welds and a better welding position.

    Rubber ain't helpful unless you don't want to damage hard surfaces like roads.. Our tracked vehicles had rubber pads unless we needed traction, then off came the rubber and we'd pound some cross grousers in, usually 6 to 10 on each side. Made a difference!👍

    Depending if it's an original cub which has a drive belt or the IH cub cadet narrow frame which uses an automotive like clutch (both are easy to fix by the way) the narrow frame clutches are strong and very durable (very common to be used in many pulling classes they can be built from stock performance lvls to extreme performance levels handling upwards of 80+ hp engines).

  • @Isavetractors

    The idler frame is actually fixed. I thought about using a pivoting frame and hydraulic shocks to help keep ground contact, but my property is all flat, and I didn't think it is necessary. Time will tell. Yes I plan on weighing down the rear quite a bit. I am working on phase 2 of this project, and that's mounting a parallel dozer to the front and weighing the whole machine down. • @Isavetractors

    @Isavetractors

    6 жыл бұрын

    The drive trains on these class of tractors are more robust than their weight class. The limiting factor is really the weight of the machine. This uses hydraulic pressure to transfer power to the wheels, so there is not an area for slippage. The transmission is driven by a shaft and no clutch is used nor needed. The brakes on these are drum brakes and are not required for turning.

    Myself I would make the same chain set up for the rear's alone, I see little or no advantage to having the halftrack bogie system other than looks and a lot of extra work. I built a set of chains for my Deere 3100, just made up from a old set of semi truck chains, doubled the number of cross bars and nothing stops the tractor used mainly for snow removal. Unless you lug up that system you will be subject to sliding sideways in snow, ice or most any other slippery surface.

  • @Isavetractors

    @Isavetractors

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yes that will be the next video. In theory they will help. The tires only make about 10 inches of contact on the ground, and with the tracks they make about 3 feet of contact. So in theory I will get 3 times the traction and power. In my next video I will build a dozer blade for it, and push dirt as a test. Thanks for watching! isavetractors tracks mainly offer floatation. The growsers will help with traction, but technically speaking you have less weight per square inch now and more rolling resistance. For example, a set of tire chains and wheel weights of equal weight of the setup would offer greater traction on firm surface. As stated before, the tracks should work much better on softer surfaces. All that being said, the tracks are awesome and I really enjoy your projects. Thanks man!

  • @Isavetractors

    @Isavetractors

    however just like a multiple pulley system, each grouser contributes to driving a vehicle forward. It's the same as multiple people pulling on a rope. If there was no grouser and just flat plate you would be completely correct in not providing more traction but more flotation, but in this case, it would prove both. Essentially the tracks in this light of vehicle will allow more effective HP transferred to the ground, than a similar weighted wheeled machine. I'll put that to the test for a future video. Thanks for commenting and watching my projects!

    You'll have to add in the ag v bar tires as well as filled vs unfilled vs wheel weights on tires to that test because I can guarantee you will see major differences between all the different combos... I like for muddy terrain the half tracks for heavier machines but liquid filled v-bars for lighter machines as an example and by adding the extra weight to the v bar tires I found that I didn't need to use the factory diff lock even a quarter as often because when you got into a position where one wheel lifts the added weight made sure it was a front that lifted instead of a rear allowing both rear wheels to have traction and be able to drive through or out of that situation

I film some to get the footage for the video then I actually get working. It spans over a couple of weeks because I also have to work on other less glamourous projects. I'll get better at capturing more footage if my process changes through the build but sometimes I get in a groove and dont turn the camera back on. I also dont neccessarily do things in the order you see in the video, because my shops fills with customer projects so I can only do what space allows at a given time. I then put it all together in a logical timeline on the computer and add the voice over. There you now have a behind the scene understanding.

    Greetings Norman and to all in the group. Viewed this vid quite some time ago however, now I have the machine I'd like to use (Craftsman GT5000). Among my concerns is the lateral torque on the trans and frame with the added length toward the rear. I don't know what the actual specs are for these 23's as it relates to the contact point(s) on a solid surface however, I'd imagine that would increase significantly with ANY additional contact (that being larger tires or tracks). I "$CORED" this machine off of FB M'place and would prefer not to tear the arse end apart if my concern's legit. If you or someone in the group could lend a bit of expertise I would truly appreciate it. Hope all's well and STAY SAFE . . . . . JJFIII

    Wait what? "i want to weld these plates on opposite side of the welded side of the link, for maximum strength"...If you add metal to opposite side from the welded side, then you keep welded side as weak. If you were to weld more material on welded side, that would been reinforced by tying both ends of the link not only to each other, but into plate going cross the two.. Then again chain is strong as its weakest link, but this addition creates stronger forces forces on that link particular, so reinforcing the weld with plate is not bad idea.
