Stevie Ray Vaughan wasn’t just an incredible guitarist. He was also a big hearted man. I’m not sure how it came about, but one of the therapists I worked with at the Yale Psychiatric Institute in New Haven, CT in the late 80’s became friends with SRV and told him about the teens we worked with. SRV became the pen pal for a bunch of them. This was before email, so it meant taking the time to write a letters to each kid and responding to what was said in the last one, (and we aren’t talking form letters) then getting them into the snail mail. It was huge to kids that had been in the hospital for up to a year and felt very forgotten. He was at the height of his career at that time.

Stevie had finally met in Jeff Healy. Both had the ability to make the blues sound so blistering yet so smooth and cool. Something special in their finger tips. It’s unbelievable cause their not play super tricky stuff, I mean some of it is difficult, but most guitarist could play their solos note for note perfectly and yet sound no where NEAR as good or interesting as Stevie. Even the best guitarists in the world.

I saw Stevie Ray back in 1987 at the Iowa State Fair when he had gotten clean and sober. He was incredible the absolute best concert I've ever been to. I also Jeff Healy in Des Moines and he was amazing. Stevie was always first to give credit and bring out black artists that started the blues and I love him for that and I know the black artists did too. Thanks for sharing this one it was good to see you young people appreciating this older, yet cool, music.

Or you can get the same feel just with chords, not being particular about a top line.

That was wonderful; especially your reaction. One thing you will see, is that Stevie will NEVER show up anyone when playing with them. He was that kind, respectful and humble. For fun, please react to Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble doing “Little Sister” in Austin, from 1989. For a bigger treat, check out “Mary Had a Little Lamb” from that same concert. Really shows off Stevie’s keyboard player, the magnificent Reece Wynans!

Never heard these two together. This is a first for me. Thank God I got to see Stevie live in Cleveland, Ohio the year he died. This is a Stevie song but I can not remember if it is on the same album as Pride and Joy. I can see and I will never be able to come close to Jeff. This is a gift that only some players ever get. You got it or you do not. Unfourtunetly I am the ladder but I still love to play. God I love your reactions. Exactly what music this great is supposed to make ya feel. Love you both.

SRV's mentor was Albert King, who was a self taught guitar player. He was a leftie, and when he first learned to play he took a right handed guitar and turned it upside down. So unlike other lefties like Cobain and Hendrix, his strings were always upside down with the thickest on the bottom and the thinnest on top. Albert King is one of the three "Kings" of blues along with BB King and Freddie King.

Jeff Healey, right-handed, plays with the strings in a left-handed orientation, with hand 'above' the neck. Treble strings are farthest from his wrist, instead of nearest.

So glad you discovered Jeff Healey! I was fortunate enough to have seen him play live multiple times in the late '80s and early '90s. Jeff broke a string during one of those shows. He yanked the broken string off so he could keep playing and dropped it on the stage, and I got one of the roadies to give me that string (which I still have). SRV is also a favorite concert memory for me. I saw him on a double bill with Joe Cocker just a month before we lost Stevie. If you want to see and hear a very different side of SRV, please react to Riviera Paradise- the live version from Austin City Limits. I want that song played at my funeral. So much emotion - beautiful song. You will both love it!
