Your reaction corresponds with what I've always thought--SRV's singing gets overshadowed by his guitar playing, obviously, but he had a good smoky voice that was perfect for the genre. And he wrote a lot of his own songs, and the lyrics are worth listening to. I had a friend from high school who was actually in drug rehab with him, before he was famous, and from what she told me, his songs came from deep down. That what he brings; it's not just his musical genius, it's that he really puts his whole being into it. You can feel it when he plays. (note: while we're admiring that smooth guitar changeover when the string broke, let's also give a hand to the savvy stage hand who was right there and knew exactly what to do. Kudos, Mr. Stage Hand.)
