On the day Stevie died, I was attending a concert featuring Jeff Healy and Bonnie Raitt. After an intermission, they both came out on stage and announced Stevie's death. You should have heard that crowd. We were all stunned and shocked (although the accident had occurred earlier, no one knew; this was long before the internet, ubiquitous cell phones, and even preceded the 24 Hour News Cycle - oh, the good old days). Jeff and Bonnie then proceeded to perform an impromptu tribute with the time remaining in their concert. I'll never forget it.

I was at Stevie Ray Vaughn's last concert the night his helicopter crashed after the show at Alpine Valley, Wisconsin August 26th 1990. I remember leaving the concert and saying to myself that if SRV was ever in my area again I wouldn't miss his show. Little did I know that I would never have that opportunity. The next morning was one of the saddest days of my life. The lineup was Eric Clapton, SRV, his brother Jimmy Vaughn, Robert Cray and Buddy Guy. RIP SRV!

What a jam session this was. My partner chose Jeff Healy’s ‘Angel Eyes” for our first dance at our wedding but I had never heard it and wanted to have a song that we both knew. I made a point of listening to it and it blew me away. It was a song about how my partner felt about me and I loved it the moment I heard it. That Jeff Beck/SRV tour came within an hour and a half of my house TWICE in 1989. I said to myself, "Well, I'm trying to save money for college next year, and now that Stevie Ray is clean and sober, I'm sure I'll have another chance." Missing it is perhaps my all-time greatest musical regret. Children, heed the words of a regretful old man. Always go to the show. Always. Damn it, I mean always. Whatever else you are doing is not as important as seeing your favorite musician perform live. For all you know, he may die in a helicopter crash before you ever have another chance.

I saw Jeff on the Hell To Pay tour in Hollywood, Florida in 1990. The Button South. After the show I bumped into his drummer, Tom Stephen, in the back of the club. I saw him come out of the club and asked him to get me Jeff's autograph. He went on the bus and there was Jeff sitting near a window. He went inside the bus and I saw him give the paper to Jeff and then when he came off he gave it back to me. It happened so fast. He then went back on the bus and that was it. I waved goodbye and felt as if I had caught them at the exact moment I needed to get an autograph. I was one of the only one who waited for them in the back. I knew I was staring at greatness. The show was so damn good.

Respectfully, I disagree... Jeff overcame his so-called disability, invented his OWN guitar technique, but was also an accomplished jazz trumpet player, who hosted his own jazz program in Toronto, during his teens...I understand his album collection was 4000 plus. Personally, I find him the more original artist of the two virtuosos. I saw SRV live on 5 occasions, initially during his first tour, in '83, opening for the Moody Blues, to his final co-headlining tour, with Joe Cocker. It was great to see him clean and playing mean, at the end!

Back in the early 80's a musician friend told me about a local blind blues guitarist who did amazing Hendrix covers. So we went to this tiny little restaurant and sat maybe 10 feet from the stage. That was the first time I got to hear Jeff Healy play. I was blown away.
Surprised those two guitars didn’t burst into flames after this. Both those guitar slingers were equally impressed and inspired by each other in this I truly believe. One of your best reactions and a great choice.
I did PR for this show and was there for this taping. I knew I was witnessing something very, very special. There were maybe 100 people in that studio. I'm so grateful to have witnessed this performance.

SRV and Jeff wow monumental moment
When you can impress SRV, you’re legendary.
Dev's smile when Jeff stands mid solo is great. Two masters clearly having fun. I wish the both lived longer and worked together more as they match well in both vocals and guitars.
There's an old story about Stevie Ray Vaughan that goes like this : one day Stevie Ray Vaughan sold his soul to the devil, don't know what Stevie Ray got, but the devil got guitar lessons.

Jeff was such an amazing talent in his own right, but SRV was otherworldly. He could take extended solos and not even have to think about where he was going from bar to bar. He was a conduit connected to something higher and the music literally flowed through him.

You talk about him getting out of his chair, I saw him at a club in Stuttgart, Germany early in his career. He jumped out of his chair, kicked it over and ran to across the stage, sliding to a stop with his toes right at the edge. We talked to one of the stage hands who told us he paced out the stage before every show so he would know how much room he had.
SRV is one of my absolute favorites. I really wish he was still around today because we could use some great, heartfelt music these days.
