Jeff Healy was diagnosed with eye cancer when he was less than 5 years old. The resulting surgery/treatment left him blind. He learned how to play blind and was an amazing musician. Sadly, the cancer returned short of his 30th birthday, and that time, he did pass away from it. Gone to soon, like many talented people.

yeah it was a shitty thing to happen. he left us a lot of good jams though. I had a friend go to brain cancer the same way. they got it, and he was in remission for a couple years, then the shit came back with a wicked and aggressive vengeance. treatment didn't work he was dead within a couple months. he helped me get a job in october and he was dead by december.

Brings me to tears. Seemed like such a kind and humble man. Couldn’t see….but he had a vision. Didn’t play holding the guitar the traditional way….he forged his own path. A perfect example of not letting anything stop you from doing what you want to do.

Jeff was 2 years old when he got cancer and lost his sight. Not 5 years. But ok 2 years or 5 years is equally terrible. And Jeff was not in his thirties when he died. Jeff was 42 when he died of cancer.

Great to see Jeff getting some props here; when he performed this song live in concert, some believed he could see a bit. Not so, as he suffered from retinoblastoma, a rare cancer which necessitated the removal of both eyes at 8 months of age. It certainly never hindered his playing or singing, as evidenced in this video. He's sorely missed by music lovers. RIP, Jeff.

Jeff was a national treasure here in Canada. Besides his guitar work and singing, he was one of the best jazz trumpeters on earth and a major authority on early jazz. He was a radio host also, sharing some of his thousands of vintage jazz records with listeners to Toronto's all jazz radio station JazzFM... Jeff appeared on film, too, in the Patrick Swayze movie Road House. He's hilarious there, essentially playing himself; he was hilarious in real life also, with a dry, wicked wit. Could've done standup comedy too if he'd wanted.

He never seen anyone play guitar, and he is self taught so he just plays it the way he hears it. Love Jeff, and Dr John too. I was working a blues festival in Michigan and it was directly after Katrina. We thought we had lost him and 4 other musicians that were in the line up were lost. Dr John showed up wrinkled cloths and shell shocked but always the performer, he gave his all. He played 2 pianos at once, and did his Cajun dance. When I was younger I would do anything to be around all the live music, sell tee-shirts tickets, or sling beers. Good days back then.

Dr. John on the keyboards! Gotta love some Dr. John. I saw Jeff Healey in OKC at a local radio station Jam festival. We setup the lights and small stage for the all day music fest. I found out he would be playing, as well as Tommy Shaw, fresh off a break-up with Styx, doing a solo tour, and Rick Emmit from Triumph would be appearing as well. I took full advantage of my stage crew pass and came back for all the shows! Jeff Healey was 4 feet away from me, on a small riser stage. Even with such a small stage, our lighting crew had set up a really great sound system so the whole convention center would be able to hear the music clearly. Watching him play that close to me, I could feel the speakers ringing in my ears, though I didn't care at the moment. Jeff caught the 'lightning', channeling that realm that great musicians seem to be in when they go off into a trance-like state. And he got up to dance, kicking the chair away. He was so close to the edge of the stage, I feared he would fall, so I stood firm, people pushing into the back of me, thinking I would do all I could to catch him. It was amazing to see and hear him so close. I saw him at 2 other shows in OKC before he passed away. I was truly saddened, nearly as much as I was when I heard SRV had passed. That small concert is definitely on my list of best experiences in my life.

Jamel, this video reaction you posted is hitting me hard. I lost my father recently. We are both musicians and shared music daily. I showed him this video some time ago and he was floored. Anyhow it’s just making me think of him and feels good. As for healey and this band….completely monstrous. There’s nothing like watching great players connect their souls and get down. True gift from above. Jeff was channeling here. His band was smoking. RIP Jeff!

Mid/late '80s, Victoria BC, early evening on a warm summer Thursday: Me and some of the boys headed out to a local meat market / pick up bar that usually had a DJ. (🤭 Hey, I was young, well, late 20s, and there would likely be pretty girls there! 😂). When we arrived, we were perplexed to discover there was a lineup to get in, with posters advertising a live performer (not usual) debuting that night, with praises by the likes of B.B. King and Stevie Ray Vaughan. So, what the hell, we waited in line. Once we got in we sat at a table right by the dance floor, about 15 feet from a two foot raised stage. After ordering our beer, the band came out, obviously guiding a blind guy. My buddies and I kinda looked at each other quizzically. 🤔 They sat him down in a chair onstage, handed him an electric guitar, which he placed on his lap 😯 ... then, when they started to play ... my world changed ... forever. It was Jeff Healey and his band, before their first album came out: I had never heard of him/them before, but he, specifically, had my attention now. He proceeded to play the cleanest, most amazing, unbelievable guitar licks I'd ever heard. He played blues, he played rock, he played country, he even played a bit of what sounded like flamenco. He played Hendrix better than Hendrix, he played with his teeth, he played while literally jumping around blind like a mad man. He seemed to be having a religious experience onstage. Despite it being a dance club, NOBODY danced that night. Every person, patrons and staff alike, stood around, hypnotized, with their mouths agape, staring, hardly believing what they were seeing and hearing. I went back Friday and Saturday, and again three nights the following week, as they were playing a two week gig there. Their first album came out shortly thereafter, and then he was in a movie with Patrick Swayze, and then ... well, I sadly never got to see Jeff Healey perform live again. But I still feel blessed, and I shall never forget how amazing the experience was that first night I saw him play! 😊

Heard this song playing on the car radio just last night. My daughter commented that a blind man was singing a song about seeing the light, and she wondered if he was being ironic toward himself intentionally.

The one and only Jeff Healey. Out of this world guitar playing with such soulful singing. Check out Healey and Stevie Ray Vaughn on "Little Sister". Blew SRVs mind. RIP Jeff and SRV.
