Canadian blues guitarist Jeff Healy lost his sight to eye cancer when he was a year old and was given his first guitar two years later. At a school for the blind, he was shown how to play the guitar the usual way but found it felt more comfortable on his lap. He passed away on Mar. 2, 2008 long fight with Cancer. RIP

He learned to do this while blind. He lost his eyesight due to eye cancer when he was 1 year old which resulted in his having glass eyes for all but the first year of his life. He learned to play guitar in a school for the blind but he didn't like holding it in a normal way he said it felt better laying on his lap. He passed away from cancer when he was 41 years old. He truly was a natural talent and IMHO is one the best guitar players I have heard.

Jeff was "discovered" by Albert Collins and Stevie Ray Vaughn at a club in Toronto (Jeff's hometown). Stevie and Jeff played together on some occasions and remained friends up to Stevie's death. Jeff was also good friends with BB King, who called him his "Canadian son". BB once commented that Jeff was the best guitarist he had ever seen.

Jeff Healey is the single most underrated guitarist of all time. Not for notes, scales, or speed. But for pure technical. He created his own unique style that's not been copied by ANYONE to this Day. Oh and Jordan there is a video with Jeff Healey and Stevie Ray Vaughn playing together. Even SRV was amazed

You are ABSOLUTELY correct!!! I only knew him from the song "Angel Eyes" until a few days ago when I started reading more about him. I HAD NO IDEA HE COULD PLAY LIKE THAT!!! Incredible is not a strong enough adjective. Like they said, he is doing what the greats did, without sight! Even when the greats played / play, you see them watch their fingers' fret position, while that was not option for Jeff. Such a great talent who died way to young. He had so much more to offer the world.

Up here in Canada, we had this boy all to ourselves for a few years. Got to see him several times in small clubs but, my most precious memory is Jeff playing a 200 seater in Fredericton, New Brunswick in 87; Before he started, people are already standing on their tables and chairs, and all the musicians in the crowd are sitting cross-legged on the dance floor in front of the stage. Got to see all that he does in the video at eye level from within 10 feet. Not a long career but he accomplished a lot. He had a brass band also.

Sadly cancer killed him at a young age, 42 i think? married and family, so sad. Some of his former STUDENTS include Steve Vai, Larry LaLonde of Primus... and Kirk Hammett of Metallica. He's been shredding since the 80s, and you can't complete your GGOAT pantheon without including him. "Flying in a Blue Dream", "Dream Song", "Surfing With The Alien", "Time"... there are so many to choose from. (Forewarning - 99% of his songs are instrumentals.)

In my day, we used to call that, "Stealing Faces." Jeff Healy was really happening in the eighties. In fact, if you're interested, he was in a movie with Patrick Swayze called "Roadhouse." He supplied much of the music in that movie. It's actually a cult classic. His driving beat and unique play on the standard blues rift is strictly his own and identifiable as, what I call, "The Healy Grove." I used to plug him in the cassette player in my '64 GTO and take long cruises. It was cool seeing him have that effect on you guys. He's no longer with us now, but, he will be remembered by a lot of blues lovers.

Us Torontonians love watching the JH reactions, ‘cause “we already know”. We all kinda grew up with their music and a were a home-town band that absolutely kicked it, whether playing for 100 in bar or at Ontario Place Forum in the round and even Maple Leaf Gardens. Never heard anyone say a negative thing about Jeff - a nice guy. If you want a sweet aural treat, check out How Blue Can You Get, live at Nottenden. A master class in stage presence and holding an audience in the palm of one’s hand, while performing. It doesn’t have to be a reaction video, necessarily; just check it out yourselves - you will not rue the day. Btw, all of the Jeff Healey Band’s studio stuff is great - debut album is great, and his album of covers is fun, too. Joe Workman played a solid bass, rock steady. Who knows, the JHB rabbit hole might even lead you to check out Amanda Marshall on a Female Friday instalment, Amber. Ranking musicians is an impossible task. He's one of the best, but Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles also accomplished greatness while blind. SRV and Jimi never saw their guitars during their best stank face performances. Then you have to figure soul piercing into the picture. David Gilmour can't play nearly as fast, but he can pierce my very soul. Janis could rip my heart and soul right out of my body, but a voice coach would think she was horrible. I'm just glad we have so many amazing artists to do the impossible and enrich our lives. Very grateful to them all! I can't imagine my life without any of them.

Agree with everything you said here. BUT I would add that, while Jimi and SRV could play amazing solos with eyes-closed stank faces, I'd bet money that they looked at the guitar a lot while they were learning. One of the amazing things about artists like Ray, Stevie, and Jeff Healy is that they had to learn their instrument blind as well. Really, though, that's just a side note. When watching a performance like this, I don't find myself thinking, "Wow, he's good for someone who's blind." Sight or no sight, he's just one of the greats, period.

@@johnplaysgames3120 Great points. These artists are masters, all. I have often pondered what drives some of them. I have considered that being blind may be a slight advantage. Their lives are full of sound but no sight. They depend on their hearing more than most of us. Could that enhance their abilities to make beautiful sounds? I'm just glad that however they achieved such mastery, I was able to reap the benefits of it.

In some ways , Jeff's blindness is an asset to his guitar-playing .... if you've noticed , when a GREAT guitarist is at the PEAK of his solo , his eyes are CLOSED !!! .... guitar is a VERY tactile instrument , and the FEEL of your guitar in your hands is a very direct connection to the music .... looking to see if you are in the right fret can actually distract you from the emotion of the moment !!!!

I have to chuckle at reactors who are surprised about blind musicians. Some of the best blues musicians have been blind: Lemon Jefferson, Blind Blake, Willie McTell, Fulton Allen (aka Blind Boy Fuller), Sonny Terry, Rev. Gary Davis, Willie Walker, Ray Charles, Blind Willie Johnson (whose “Dark Was the Night” was included on the records that were launched with the Voyager spacecrafts), and many others. BTW, there were a few people who played guitar that way. Cornelius Bright was a pretty good one.

It's a shame it was not on the air longer, but this episode was my first intro to Jeff and I went to see him soon after in a tiny club (just before Road House the movie blew up). I sat 10 feet from him just drooling and tearing up. I saw him several times and even met him and the band briefly. Each time I saw him play was simply insane, it's such a shame he passed away. Interestingly, he was a huge jazz fan with a collection 10,000 78 records, and he was an incredible trumpet player as well.
