Excellent video as always, brother. I would like to add three important facts about Kanjinchō's performance shown in the video: 1- This performance took place at NHK Hall, which is the famous NHK concert hall located in Shibuya, Tokyo. 2. The actors present in this play are: Ichikawa En'ō I as Benkei, Nakamura Ganjirō II (father of Sakata Tōjūrō IV) as Togashi and Morita Kan'ya XIV (father of Bandō Tamasaburō V) as Yoshitsune 3. Despite belonging to Kabuki Jūhachiban, in recent years Kanjinchō has become more associated with the Matsumoto Kōshirō line of actors than the Ichikawa Danjūrō line of actors, mainly due to the fact that the actors who most played Benkei in recent years belong to or linked to the Matsumoto Kōshirō line of actors (Matsumoto Kōshirō VII, Matsumoto Hakuō I, Matsumoto Hakuō II, Nakamura Kichiemon II and Matsumoto Kōshirō X). By the way, I have an important question: do you remember the mimosanoki channel, that KZread channel that has several important videos about Kabuki, including the one about the Shūmei (or name-taking ceremony) of Ichikawa Danjūrō XII? So, it was deleted or taken down, because when I went to look for the video mentioned above, it was said that the account had been closed. Do you have any idea what could have happened?

Thank you for the annotations! Ganjirō II's performance as Togashi was stunning, by the way. These recently uploaded documentaries are an absolute treat. It makes me sad to hear that. From what you tell me, my guess is that is was deleted due to copyright infringement.

@@KabukiInDepth Yeah, I'm also pissed off about this situation, mainly because the channel had a great video explaining Kanjincho in very in-depth detail (including the one who played Benkei in the video was the great Nakamura Kichiemon II). Speaking of Benkei, I have an important doubt here: what are the chances of Kataoka Ainosuke VI and Onoe Shōroku IV playing Benkei in the near future, especially with the fact that they are on the rise (and the fact that Ainosuke VI is considered the successor to Kataoka Nizaemon XV as the main tachiyaku of Kamigata Kabuki)?

Actually, Shōroku IV was already allowed to play Benkei four times, around the time of his shūmei. Hopefully he is given more chances in the future. If I had to guess, I'd say Ainosuke will be allowed at some point, although it is not guaranteed. Nakamura Shikan VIII was also permitted to play Benkei twice, several years ago. Right now, the only two actors playing it regularly are Danjūrō XIII and Kōshirō X, as opposed to the previous generation, when there was four (Danjūrō XII, Hakuō II, Kichiemon II and Nizaemon XV), so it just makes sense to give chances to more actors.

@@KabukiInDepthwho is giving this allowance? Danjuro XIII, Shochiku? The elderly members of the Naritaya clan? All the above? Thank you.

Traditionally, it would have been solely up to Danjūrō, as the head of the Ichikawa clan. Nowadays, it is likely that young actors will still have to ask him for permission and some guidance, but mostly as a formality. If he opposes, he might still have enough power to veto a performance, although it would depend on the circumstances. Otherwise, it is mainly Shochiku management that decides on cast choices.

I remember a while ago I saw a video of Kataoka Nizaemon and his grandson Sennosuke end Renjishi with the same Mie. Does that mean they follow that same kata? Also due to the recent events of the Omodakaya have they taken down a lot of their performances. I can’t find much anywhere. One of my recent favorites is when they staged Kokaji where he played the Fox god Inari.

Not necessarily. What happens is that each Kabuki acting house has a different kata and acting style that differentiates them from each other. From what you said is that the following: Nizaemon XV (the head of the Matsushimaya house) and his grandson Sennosuke I (son of Takataro I, who is the eldest son of Nizaemon XV) used the Omodakaya version of Renjishi, which is unique in that they use a bridge made of three platforms for the final part of Renjishi. To better understand this, I suggest you watch the video "Kabuki-za August 2020 Hanagata Kabuki", as there is a performance of Renjishi starring Kataoka Ainosuke VI and Nakamura Kazutaro I (son of Nakamura Ganjirō IV, grandson of Sakata Tojuro IV and heir of the Kamigata branch of the Narikomaya house) in which they use the Matsushimaya version of Renjishi (i.e. the version used by the two main tachiyaku of the Matsushimaya house, Ainosuke VI and Nizaemon XV).

Nizaemon has indeed a different kata for Renjishi, choreographed by his relative, the dance master Hanayagi Juraku II.

I am a Westerner who does not have the ability to see Kabuki because without the cultural background, it remains impossible for me to derive meaning from the dance.
