Two things. One, the story Mr. Danjuro XIII tells about his dad would make any Western therapist concerned. Two, theological librarian here, Catholic version. It seems to me that Kabuki theater is not about acting: it is liturgy.

Both roles that Danjūrō XIII will play I remember seeing being played by actors from the Matsumoto Kōshirō/Nakamura Kichiemon line, Matsumoto Hakuō II, his brother Nakamura Kichiemon II and Hakuō II's son, Matsumoto Kōshirō X. Yes! His son, Ichikawa Omezō VI, has chosen to play the leading role in Kenuki, one of the most iconic plays of the Sadanji line. I'm currently working on a video about it, which will come out this Sunday.
