With each acting family in kabuki, names are passed down when the heir is suitable. The seniors and masters decide when it is allowed. Onoe Kikugoro inherited his name from his father, Onoe Baiko. Baiko, was the adopted son of Onoe Kikugoro. His real son, felt that he didn’t have the talent of his father and adopted brother. During a tour of Hawaii, he stayed behind. He taught at the university there, teaching kabuki. The present Kikugoro and his adopted brother always stayed in touch. Because of this, the kabukiza (kabuki theater), sends actors over to Hawaii regularly to present shows and conduct seminars at the Hawaii university. The top actors always have apprentices and disciples in their guilds. Sometimes, when an actor feels that an apprentice shows extraordinary talent, they’ll adopt them. It’s not an adoption of day an orphan, but in their artistic way. To teach then the family style of kabuki acting, and gradually into more starring roles.
