The top half came off as he was casting... as he was retrieving, he got a bite. It was actually pretty lucky, as we were having a hard time finding bait and got several small jacks from that same boat slip.

I will admit, I was disappointed that we didn't land a single fish for a photo. The first grouper broke the line by rubbing it against the buoy chain (I think Capt Mark admitted he needed to guide the boat away faster from the buoy after that...); I'm pretty sure the second grouper got off because the knot came undone (tied to a much shorter and frayed leader from the previous break off...); and the third grouper came off when Capt Mark loosened the drag as my friend was reeling up the fish... As far as the big jack breaking off, honestly, I was relieved, as the rod / reel combo was grossly undersized for the fish (it was a 4000 series reel with 20 lb braid and a medium action freshwater rod... essentially a bait rod...). I had been fighting it over half an hour at that point opposite handed (I'm a lefty...) The combo really needed to be at least a 6000 size or larger and we should have chased the fish down sooner, as I couldn't put a lot of pressure on it with such light tackle. It was my fault for breaking the rod at the end, but every other SW guide I've been out with always seems to have at least one heavier spinning outfit set-up to toss a buck tail or a live bait when there is bait busting the surface. Such is life...
