On the last point, I generally agree Simon, but they make it a huge pain in the ass and often very expensive to fight even simple tickets. My father got a ticket of almost a thousand dollars in Colorado while installing lifeline services for people out in the middle of nowhere. He was about 68 at the time and scheduled to shortly undergo double knee replacement surgery, and he couldn't walk straight- hell walking at all was a bit rough. Anyway, they pulled him over and gave him a field sobriety test when they saw his out of state plates (we installed lifeline for most of New Mexico and southern Colorado) and one of his back lights had gone out. They also commonly pulled people over at that point due to the changing marijuana laws between the states- which I personally think is the reason they pulled him over. By the end the ticket was for the broken light, and his supposed intoxication- which again he wasn't, we were there working and had been doing so for hours. As he couldn't do like half of the shit due to his knees they gave him a ticket. He was in no way intoxicated, he was just unable to move his legs certain ways or very quickly. He was allowed to fight it, but to do so he had to have a doctor go to court to explain the situation, as well as many other fees, and the roughly 6 hour drive there. The doctor alone was gonna cost him almost double the ticket cost. Add in gas costs, food, hotel (for him and the Dr), loss of work, and it was already far more expensive, and that's ignoring the additional court fees and shit they tack on. So he could fight the ticket, but it was gonna cost him between 3 and 7 grand, and a lot of time (multiple trips to Colorado- again about 6 hour drive one way and/or hotels and food etc.) They do this stuff all the time because they know most people can't afford to fight it, and even if they can afford it, most of the time the outcome is far from a guarantee. Which means the police have a pretty good chance of wringing those fees out, if not more. And if the police lose, oh well, it generally doesn't cost them much, if anything. It's some real bullshit. We've got a really really fucked legal system here. I know a 70 year old woman whose licence they revoked because she couldn't pay a 75$ ticket. Other than that they also added on additional fees, and late fees, etc. Last I checked she had paid over 900$ over about a year and she was still only paying for the interest and fees and what not- nothing of the principal 75$ And without being able to drive she was struggling even more to feed and care for herself, let alone make more money to pay even more. I saw a similar case with a younger woman, but the ticket started out at about 150$. By the time she finished making payments- took almost 2years, she had paid them over 2000$. The price increase again due to all sorts of bullshit fees, late fees, etc. And she wasn't like jerking them around, she had been acting in good faith, doing her best to make weekly payments of as much as she could, as often as she could; she kept in contact with them etc., but this almost ruined her life. And obviously, it was even harder for her to make any money as she had no vehicle and our public transport system is absolutely fucking awful. It also cost her children two years of birthdays, Christmas, etc. as she couldn't afford to do much. They were almost evicted, etc. And none of this is uncommon. It is absolutely disgusting the bullshit they pull on some people. Absolutely ruining their life over little civil issues (parking in the wrong spot or other small stuff) because they can't pay immediately. Even more serious tickets for say speeding, or running a light- yes it's dangerous and deserves something, but I don't think it should lead to years (or a lifetime) ruined, or nearly so. A couple years back, they had a cop dress as Santa and laugh and shit about all the licenses they had taken that year, claiming it as an example of their 'good work', but after an outside group looking into it, the majority (I don't remember exactly but it was 70%+/- 10%) were from people like those I talked about- basically just little tickets that were not big deal, not violent crimes, or hurting others, or even drugs, but the people couldn't afford them and ended up screwed. Many have their license revoked until parent is complete, but some are even jailed. Cases have gone to court arguing it is an unconstitutional debtor's prison, with mixed results. It's absolutely horrible, infuriating, and often very sad. Kids have lost months and even years with their parents over it.

Eventually my mum asked him about it and it turns out he grew tomatoes on one side of the fence so they only got half a days sun. I was so relieved to discover he wasn't crazy it was a decade later before i wondered why he didn't just grow them in the backyard on his fence line or up against one of the houses walls...

Simon probation has two forms one is supervised and the other is unsupervised. Unsupervised is basically as long you don't get on trouble again during that time you're free to go. The more common supervised though you have at check in (plus have no so against unreasonable searches at any times the probation officer wants) tell them when you're going to leave the jurisdiction, and you have to pay for the supervision plus fines while on it often. You have to pay all your disposable income to it. Like they decided how much you need for food and housing, everything. Plus you need to stay employed the whole time.

Probation can be thought of as a 'second chance to avoid jail,' as long as you keep from doing any more crime then the suspended sentence never comes into effect. In this case - If Johanna fails the terms of prohibition two years in, then she goes to jail for the whole year.

But it'd be inefficient to directly just take solid waste and try to rearrange its molecules, the more useful thing is to let the microbes do their jobs a bit anyway, nature's already quite good at making nutrients circulate around to get reused. So an accelerated futuristic angle (I'd conjecture) probably looks more like fancy quick composting and various microbe farms to generate useful proteins and sugars et cetera.

When an acquaintances husband died, a Go Fund Me popped up for funeral expenses, etc. When the wife found out, she tried to figure out which friend had put it up so she could coordinate the funeral. Turns out it was someone in a another state who had put it up and refused to release the money to her. The friends who had donated couldn't get their money back either. So I'm pretty sure that there are scammers out there finding obituaries that would make for a good story, then go onto Facebook to snag family photos and boom, fundraiser to line their pockets.

No problem, so far, but half the people didn't actually build a fence or a wall surrounding their property, so they have these awesome wrought iron gates or wooden doors surrounded by tall adobe walls that go out two meters in either direction...and then, nothing. I wonder if these folks sponsored that build the wall gofundme?
