I was one of those babies that they operated on with no anesthesia. I was born in 1981 and had my first operation before I was 24 hours old. While they stopped doing those kinds of surgeries in the early to mid 80s, I'd already had some major surgeries on my abdomen and left hip, among other areas. In my life I've about 74 surgeries. Part of the argument for them not using anesthesia was that the babies wouldn't remember the pain or procedure. They were correct. I don't remember those surgeries but I'd argue that my body/brain does. My mom said that if I was left alone in my crib, I would rarely cry. But as soon as anyone would pick me up, even just to hold me or give me a cuddle, I'd scream. She said it wasn't a normal cry but a horrible scream and as soon as she (or whoever) put me down, I'd be fine again. As I've gotten older, I do not like to be touched. I would instinctually flinch when anyone would touch me, even if it was just a casual arm or shoulder pat. Upon realizing that this was hurting people's feelings, as they thought they were doing something wrong, I've made myself stop but I reacted that way until I was in my mid-teens. I'm 39 years old now and I still don't like being touched. There are only a few people that I don't mind touching me. My father, my husband and my step-daughter are it, really and even then I'm not all that touchy feely. Thank goodness I'm not from an overly touchy feely family so hugs from my aunt or brother never really comes up. I didn't know this happened to me until I was an adult and my dad happened to mention it to me. It explained so much, at least for me.

@@zephrite - I have scars (small ones) in my mouth from my old childhood dentist. My parents didn't know he was that rough and thought that I was just crying because I was a kid and hated the dentist. I had bad teeth from all the medications I was on as a kid (pain meds, antibiotics, etc) and I didn't learn how to swallow pills until I was around 12 or so so everything was liquid. So yeah ruined teeth equals lots of dentist trips. Anyway, finally the dentist said something to me while my mom was in the room. I was crying and didn't want him to do anything to me and he told me that if I didn't calm down he'd send my mom from the room and restrain me. He tells my mom that kids are much more willing to comply if their parents weren't in the room. At that point, my mom told him that we were done here and we left. I have no memory of this and only know about it because she told me years later.

Interesting. I was born in 1978 & was also operated on as an infant (hernia) with no anesthesia. The hernia was from being delivered with forceps - giant tweezers one clamps to the baby's head to yank them out - also something no longer done. Same here. I don't remember it but I do get awful migraines & also instinctively dislike touch. I thought it was just because most people are gross, but this is an interesting theory.

I will never complain again about my kids being super clingy and only allowing me to hold them. When I'd put them down, they would cry and be inconsolable. Made showers fun. I'd much rather live through that 100x then for one of them to have your experience. I'm truly, very sorry it happened to you.

That thing about "children don't feel pain" was an issue with my sister. She required a pretty serious brain surgery in 1982, at just 6 months old. Although she was numbed with local anesthetic, she was fully awake as her skull, throat, chest, and belly were cut open to implant a shunt into the brain with a tube leading down the side of her neck, through her chest, and to her abdominal cavity to drain cerebral fluid backed up from hydrocephalus. You would think at 6 months old, she wouldn't remember, only she still does to this day. It was so traumatic, the memory of horror and confusion was burned into her mind. Through her early childhood, she had a severe phobia to the sound of metal utensils and would shriek if she heard silverware rattling. My mother didn't know why until my sister was old enough to talk and described her operation in graphic detail, how she was forced to lie there on the operating table, strapped down, fully awake, as the surgeon used the surgery utensils sitting on a metal tray to saw open her skull, cut open her body, and shove that tube along the entire length from brain to belly. She required two more brain surgeries before the United States recognized the need for anesthesia in children, but luckily her detailed description of the surgery TO THE SURGEON HIMSELF convinced the man to use general anesthesia on her. She and I both have very-early childhood memories from before we were a year old, which I would say was cool and maybe we have a superpower, except with both of us, they were traumatizing memories that left us with phobias for the rest of our lives. Never underestimate an infant. Even if they don't remember details due to immense trauma, early childhood leaves deep impressions.

A guy who was found guilty of "sodomy" with a horse was tied to said horse and dumped into the harbour to drown at Cape Town sometime in the early 18th century. The whole case was rather dodgy and it is not clear if the guy was really guilty or if people just thought he was off because his parents were really disreputable, but in either case I always thought it was massively unfair to the horse.

Growing up, I had a fear that I was going to lose an eye. Even as a child, I wanted to wear sun glasses, all the time, just to protect my eyes. When I was a young adult, my mom shared with me that I was born with a problem with my tear ducts and a procedure was done on them (no anesthetic). Of course I didn't remember the procedure, but I've always wondered if it had a long term effect on me. BTW, I outgrew it and don't worry about it any more, and brussel sprouts are delicious.

It lead to one solitary sprout appearing and us having to eat it under protest. We called it "the obligatory brussel sprout". So I bought a box of 1000, they were delicious. I would just snack on them constantly. I got slot of comments but I just said since they weren’t consecrated I wasn’t sinning. Combine them with a good gravy. Belgian here: the traditional recipe is, you boil the sprouts, then fry them a bit with salt, pepper, butter and a little nutmeg if you like it; You fry sausages and make a gravy with them; Then serve all with a heap of mashed potatoes, the gravy goes on top of the sprouts, and every time you put a sprout on your fork, you put a bit of sausage on it as well. Makes them a lot more palatable. (Did you know, I was surprised when I heard that the typical vegetable kids refuse to eat in the US is broccoli. In Belgium, it's sprouts. With regards to the anaesthesia/ pain killer question: I was given a lot of morphine when I dislocated my elbow. I remember getting an xray and then being surrounded by nurses and doctors whilst I was sat up on a bed, and then suddenly I was lying flat and my arm was warm. That jump in memories was me being administered morphine intravenously, having my bones shoved back into the elbow socket and the plaster being put on my arm - the warm feeling was the plaster setting. According to the nurse I'd been concious the whole time and screamed the place down when they pushed the bones back into place. I don't remember any of it thankfully. I then spent the night tripping on tramadol in a ward bed, which I wish I also didn't remember since that was an incredibly unpleasant experience. I just hope I don't need to go through anything like that again as I'm no longer able to have morphine (or tramadol, or a bunch of other strong pain killers and drugs) due to other medication I'm on. I just hope if I ever was in a situation requiring those kinds of drugs that the doctors and nurses could still do something to alleviate the pain. As far as I understand, general anaesthetic does render you unconcious (being "put under") as having a writhing, screaming patient would make surgery a helluva lot more difficult. Whilst local anaesthetic numbs the area but leaves your mind clear (like the injections the dentist gives you before a filling).

Depends on the level of anaesthesia. I've had a number of ERCPs and they will sedate (so just on the edge) with a mix of pain relief and benzodiazipine which should aid in not forming new memories. However, in the moment, the experience is still felt and not... pleasant. My tolerance is high due to genetics, and in the past their doses have been inadequate: the pain, as they were inflating a duct to my pancreas, cut through the sedatives and I have very much kept the memories of it. And ERCPs are relatively non-invasive. Surgery, though, it's about shutting down pathways so the brain just doesn't register it; no memories, no dreams, nothingness - just about brain dead. Anaesthetists, where their skill is almost more of an art than science, have become really good at this, so the days of being locked in during surgery - awake with sensation, but without movement, like the worst old hag syndrome ever, is thankfully extremely rare (coupled with brainwave monitoring, if you're paranoid about the remote possibility). Post-operative pain control from a laparotomy, though... If they recommend an epidural, don't be a martyr, damn we'll take it and everything else they offer. Blissfully floating on a cotton wool cloud with slight aches vs. screaming throughout the night writhing in white hot searing pain. Yes, someone who had just gone through the same procedure as me opted against the epidural. Not just a rough night for them, but anyone else who could hear the screams and whimpering.

I think "real" meat will still exist, but I think it will become more of a delicacy. I also think (using the same technology) in the future there will be no organ transplants...the technology to grow organs will be so cheap and available that the idea we ever had to wait for someone to die/offer an organ to get one will be bizarre.

My sons were born in 1982 and 1984. I wouldn't have cared what any doctor had told me...if either of them had needed a surgical procedure, they WOULD have received anesthetic!! I decided before they were born, that if they were boys, I wouldn't get them circumcised. Despite my family doctor completely agreeing with my decision, after each of their births, I had doctors from the hospital trying to convince me to have the procedure done. I made my decision based on the fact that I felt that it was completely unnecessary...and the fact that they perform circumcisions on newborns without anesthetic was absolutely horrifying to me.

I had history professor in high school who got fed up with my fat friend never doing his homework, one day when he asked my friend if he had his homework and received the normal “no”, my tall lanky professor looked him deadpan in the eyes and asked… “did you eat it?”. The whole room went dead silent except for the one jerk dying laughing in the middle of the room. That jerk was me… no regertz

Casual Criminalist is how I first discovered the Whistlervers in earnest so I'm not a stranger to at times hyperactive and thread losing Simon but this might be the first Brain Blaze I've found, and it's certainly the most hyperactive I've seen Simon. Like I'm legit worried... it feels like it's 3 am after a long week and he's mixed some speed with his coffee at the peak of a mental breakdown and I'm here for it. Also first time I've seen him standing. Simon continues to impress me with his range of talents and hobbies.

the potential monsters society created performing surgery without anesthesia on infants is beyond staggering. Maybe some, maybe most shut it away in the recesses of their minds, but what neurological trauma that kind of blinding pain could cause... that could be a sub-genre of psychiatry in its self.

I had a friend who visited the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, and there was a bowl of holy water at the entrance. She suddenly wondered what it tasted like and dipped her fingers in and tasted it. It didn’t taste any different from water, but then she suddenly realized that thousands of people had dipped their fingers into that bowl that day and there were likely a litany of dangerous microbes festering in it. She got quite ill, but she survived.

Tell Danny not to boil his brussel sprouts -- use fresh sprouts, slice off the end and pull off the outer leaves. Cut in half, toss with olive oil, salt and pepper. Then roast in the oven, cut side down on a baking sheet, for about 20 minutes. Shake the pan halfway through roasting. Totally different from boiled sprouts, and very delicious!
