My Mother ran an after-school and Summer art program for twenty years. She would get mothers who would insist that their son (always boys, for some reason) had a severe peanut allergy and that no other kids should be allowed to have any peanut products (including Snickers and Reeses). She would ask the mothers to leave an epi pen in the office (She always kept a couple of epis in the office for emergencies anyway) and to make sure the teacher knew where the kid kept the one he carried. Not once did one of those kids have an epi pen. But the one's who did have a real peanut allergy, never asked to restrict other kids snacks, and were grateful that the staff knew what to do. Many times she would see the Mother diagnosed peanut allergy kids eating peanut laced chocolate bars, when she asked them about it, they would roll their eyes.

So my hospital has medical grade leeches. And according to google: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2004 approved the use of leeches for localized venous congestion after surgery, recognizing them as living, breathing medical devices. Given that the scientific name for the leech is hirudinea, their use for medical purposes is often referred to as hirudotherapy.

The mention of leeches reminded me. After Stalin's stroke, his blood pressure was dangerously high. A doctor applied multiple leeches to his face and head to bring it down. Imagine how terrified the doctor must have been.
@J3diMindTrix
2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I doubt that doctor seriously thought that leeches were going to work; sounds like a way to say 'look, I tried!' without actually performing any legitimate medical intervention, chances are, if you were alive at that time in the Soviet Union you most likely would have known someone who was 'purged' or at the very least had a reason to dislike Stalin (he also purged many doctors, along with other professionals and intellectuals - the 'intelligentsiya' were sent to the gulags in high numbers being perceived as a threat) so the fact there even was a doctor there suggests to me that they were either young and inexperienced or not very good at their job, otherwise they would have been purged I didn't know any surgery (/ treatments of any kind) were performed on Stalin; as you mention everyone was simply too scared to try something, for fear if it went wrong... even if it worked and his life was saved, when he woke up there was no telling if he would have been content with how he was treated and considering what could (and did) get you sent to the gulag (at best) or instantly 'disappeared' (at worst) never to be seen again, it was a real gamble with your life to even attempt life-saving measures on him at that point; in notably ironic fashion it was the unbridled fear he instilled in his own people that resulted in doctors being too terrified to treat him, which quite possibly led to his death At that early stage of his illness it would have been far easier to diagnose and treat whatever had happened to him (which is still debated to this day - poisoning being a likely candidate) but apparently no one dared find out for sure or treat him with an otherwise appropriate speed and urgency.
@TheRealMarxz

just being a doctor with in the political reach of Stalin must have been terrifying given he actively purged them on at least one occasion - personally if I'd been the doctor called out I'd have snuck something nasty in and then gone "no, sorry, he's too far gone for medical help, best call a priest... oh wait I guess he's screwed there as well"
