hm, in the tie in comics, we see that after surviving having the Blade of Olympus driven through his body, Kratos wandered around for a while, he left the ruined lands of Greece, he tried to toss away the Blades of Chaos that have some how found its way back to him, but they keep coming back no matter how hard he tries to throw them away Kratos ends up in Egypt and encounters Thoth, the Scribe God, who appears to him as a baboon, a scholar, and a crane Thoth tells Kratos he has arrived just in time to fulfill a prophecy, and Kratos is forced to fight and kill a crocodile monster after this, Kratos continued his journey and ended up in Scandinavia, he met Faye and found love again, he started a new family with her, but was afraid to become a father to Atreus, because he still had some PTSD about what happened to his first wife and daughter Kratos would frequently venture deep into the woods to practice keeping himself calm, but every now and then, he would give into his rage and brutally castrate wild animals that invoked his ire

When the Norse games were first announced, the question to me was always "who was the woman kratos had the kid with?". The games have masterfully answered that, by gradually sketching what sort of person Faye was and why Kratos loved her. She was a warrior, but kind hearted, loving but able to call out his shit. It's no wonder Kratos loved her, and for a franchise that used sex mini games in the past, that's remarkable how far they've come with Kratos' stance on women.

I like that his character is understandable, it's not 'he does this because the script said so'. Kratos has always had flaws but he's also always loved his family, those he acknowledged as family anyway, losing calliope gave him rage, he focused that rage on everyone that hurt him, then when all was said and done he tried to end his life only to fail, and was left with literally nothing. Now he has a son that he wants to be a father to the way he wanted to be calliopes father but now his experiences have left him frightened. He knows what he wants he just doesn't believe he can or should have it.

People who call him weak now are stupid childish babies who don't understand how characters work. He's not weak, he's sullen. After a few hundred lifetimes of bloodshed and war, Kratos matured and grew as a man. He has a better handle on his emotions, and now focuses on his family.

@BillyBro he was never weak imo, and even in Rganarok he is far from weak, i just find it weird how people can say someone is weak when they show emotions other than anger and rage, he grew more mature and stronger now because he understood his actions and he understood that anger and rage won’t solve anything, yes compared to the previous games, he’s now not as “strong” but imo him showing emotions and restraint is showing us how much he grew and developed as a character. Also i think part of what makes him calm in this game is that he cares for his son and i think that’s the point of making him like this, is that he’s not acting like a god, like general but as a father which is new and far interesting imo.

I'm replaying the previous game again and it's so unfortunate that Kratos' past trauma and his fear of potentially harming his son has made them initially so distant to each other. Kratos didn't know anything about Atreus and was clearly an absent father throughout Atreus' upbringing. It was so heartbreaking to hear this little 10 year old kid say things like "You left me again! Why don't you care?", "I know I was never what you wanted", "you only talk to me whenever you need something", and "You said I was cursed, you think I'm weak because I'm not like you" ..... those signs of abandonment issues was so clear on little Atreus and I'm so glad that Kratos chose to be a better father.
